Dave Hunt and The Berean Call :: By Mark A. Becker

The late Dave Hunt of The Berean Call was, to me, as I have referred to him many times, my earthly mentor. I owe so much of my foundational and theological comprehension of Scripture (as well as my understanding of the many different subjects Dave researched and wrote about) to Dave and his teachings.

Sorrowfully, even though I lived in the same state of Oregon with family members living in Bend – the city where Dave and founder of The Berean Call, TA McMahon, lived and operated – I never had the opportunity to meet Dave personally and thank him for all he did for me before he passed away on Friday, April 5th, 2013.

That meeting of endearing thankfulness and immense gratitude for his mark upon my spiritual life, my walk with my Lord and Savior, and my growth in the knowledge of the Holy Scriptures, will have to wait until I join him in glory.

How I came to know who Dave Hunt and The Berean Call were is an interesting tale…

In the early 2000’s, I received a newsletter through the mail. I do not remember if it had my name on it or if maybe it was addressed to ‘Current Resident,’ but it came to me nonetheless. The newsletter was from an outfit named The Berean Call and had the Scripture Acts 17:11 – “[The Bereans]… searched the Scriptures daily [to see] whether those things were so.” As I was fairly young in my dedication to intently study the Scriptures, beginning at age 30 and being then in my mid-30s, I was very interested to see what this new organization was all about. So, I sat down and started reading and found myself totally immersed in the subject matter and especially in what I was learning, devouring the Biblical content provided therein.

I was serving in a local church on the worship team, and it was at this same time that The Purpose-Driven Life was published and, unfortunately, made its way into the church I was serving in. The church began a sermon study on the book and highly recommended each family purchase a copy. When I was reading the content, I began to feel very uncomfortable with the overall message and was especially concerned with the Scripture passages that were cited in the book, as they seemed foreign to me after having read the Bible up to eight times through, for I usually read the entire Bible front to back once to twice a year. That seemed very odd to me, in addition to the way those passages were applied to the concepts behind the book.

Consequently, as The Berean Call is a discernment ministry that attempts to keep an eye on the myriads of false teachings that infiltrate the church, Dave and TA began writing on the Biblical errors found in The Purpose-Driven Life, which, of course, confirmed my feeling of uneasiness when I was reading the book. With many other factors involved, and also because the church I was attending and serving in was going ‘Purpose Driven,’ I resigned my position at the church after serving for four and a half years.

For the past quarter of a century, I have devoured almost every book, article, and video/radio programs that Dave Hunt, through The Berean Call’s ministry, ever published and produced. Truly, Dave Hunt and The Berean Call have been foundational and instrumental in my own ministry all of these years later, and I owe so much thankfulness and gratitude to them, that the only way I will be able to adequately do homage to Dave and The Berean Call’s ministry is through this article and especially when I find myself in glory with my Lord and Savior and His beloved Saints, as Dave is today.

Since I have no idea how I received the newsletter on that fateful day – whether it was a random outreach by The Berean Call or whether someone I knew signed me up to receive the newsletter – I consider that day a divine appointment, to be sure! If it was someone that I knew signing me up for The Berean Call newsletter, or possibly the people who lived in the apartment unit prior to my moving there, I would like to thank them from the bottom of my heart for doing what they did. And if it was a random mailing situation from The Berean Call, I want to thank them for doing what they did. Either way, it was certainly a divine appointment orchestrated by our Lord, and I want to thank Him for doing what He did!

Powerful Books from Dave Hunt and The Berean Call

The Berean Call is first and foremost a discernment ministry that specializes in warning the bride of Christ of the many false teachings and false teachers that have invaded the churches of Christ.

Dave was a wonderful man of God that was impeccable in his research on many various subjects, including but not limited to the occult, cults, Islam, Hinduism, psychology, atheism, Calvinism, eschatology, theology, and sharing of the gospel.

Dave Hunt’s powerful books for the bride of Christ on the many subjects he was expert in included the following, with many of the first links in the titles available in free e-book formats (Hardback, Paperback, and Audio Books are also linked):

The Occult in the World and in the Church

The Seduction of Christianity – Today, Christians are being deceived by a worldview more subtle and seductive than any before. What are the dangers in the growing acceptance and practice of: Positive and possibility thinking; Healing of memories; Self-help philosophies; Holistic medicine. The seduction of Christianity will not appear as a frontal assault or oppression of our religious beliefs. Instead, it will come as the latest fashionable philosophies offering to make us happier, healthier, better educated, and even more spiritual.

Beyond Seduction: A Return to Biblical Christianity (Radio Series on the Book) – A revolution has begun. Some have hailed this revolution as a much-needed purification of the Church. Others say that it will lead to a major schism in Christianity. Since the release of the bestselling The Seduction of Christianity, Christians everywhere have come face-to-face with this undeniable truth: we must be certain that what we believe is firmly based upon the teaching of God’s Word. The only real remedy for deception and apostasy is a return to a true biblical foundation for Christian living.

America: The Sorcerer’s New Apprentice (Paperback Book) – Originally written as a tool to educate and inform non-believers of the dangers of the New Age movement, this timely reprint of Dave Hunt’s classic 1988 work will astound you all over again with its ground-breaking revelations and prophetic implications.

Occult Invasion – The world and the church are clearly being prepared for some great event—but what? when? why? and by whom? Today, children and adults alike are faced with an endless barrage of “supernatural” violence and sexualized content designed to assault the senses—not merely for titillation, but for transformation of values, beliefs, and lifestyles. Dave Hunt documents and exposes this false dichotomy of “darkness” and “light” that is not only deceiving the world—but countless believers in the professing evangelical church.

Cults

The God Makers (Ed Decker and Dave Hunt) – Mormons claim to follow the same God and the same Jesus as Christians. They also state that their gospel comes from the Bible. But are they telling the truth? The God Makers, one of the most powerful books to penetrate the veil of secrecy surrounding the rituals and doctrines of the Mormon Church, reveals the inner workings and beliefs of Mormonism. Through personal interviews and well-documented evidence, you’ll discover the true nature of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and its hidden worldwide agenda.

A Woman Rides the Beast (History and Prophecy) – In Revelation 17, the Apostle John describes in great detail the characteristics of a false church that will be the partner of the Antichrist. Was he describing the Roman Catholic Church? To answer that question, Dave Hunt spent years gathering research and indisputable historical documentation (primarily Catholic sources), providing information not generally available. Are you missing half the story about the last days? Many are amazed to discover in Revelation 17 that there is also another mysterious character at the heart of prophecy—a woman who rides the beast.

Evolution vs. Creationism

Cosmos, Creator, and Human Destiny (Hardback Book)- This excuse-shattering exposé of Darwin and Dawkins is the Dave Hunt magnum opus you’ve been waiting (and praying) for! Each of Dave’s seminal works—whether on occultism, Catholicism, Calvinism, ecumenism, Islam, or cosmic evolution- has all been, at the time of their publication, his “most important work to date”—and this 606-page refutation of Darwinian evolution (as championed by Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, and today’s aggressive “New Atheists”) is no exception.

Calvinism/Reformed Theology

What Love Is This? (Hardcover Book) – Discussions with many people around the world reveal that multitudes of sincere, Bible-believing Christians are “Calvinists” only by default. It takes only a few simple questions to discover the fact that most of those who regard themselves as Calvinists are largely unaware of what John Calvin and his early followers of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries actually believed and practiced. Nor do they fully understand what most of today’s leading Calvinists believe. What Love Is This? exposes the true beliefs of Calvinism and addresses all the issues surrounding this doctrine.

TULIP and the Bible: Comparing the Works of Calvin to the Word of God (Paperback Book) – Thousands of readers have been wonderfully and powerfully influenced by Dave Hunt’s authoritative, 590-page hardcover treatise on Calvinism, What Love Is This? But many have asked for a more concise analysis of “reformed” theology. After years of popular demand, TBC is pleased to offer this resource, designed to help believers navigate the confusing and conflicting views surrounding the Five Points of Calvinism, commonly known by the acronym T.U.L.I.P.

Calvin’s Dilemma (Paperback Book) – Drawn from Dave Hunt’s masterful work on Calvinism, this long-awaited installment in the “easier-to-read” paperback series provides an invaluable and highly accessible examination of one of the most hotly debated topics among evangelicals today.

Calvin’s Tyrannical Kingdom – From 1541 to 1549, French theologian John Calvin attempted the perfect marriage of Church and State in Geneva, Switzerland. Determined to transform the city into a model of God’s kingdom on Earth, Calvin established numerous detailed “reforms” as well as devising a system to police citizens through regular home inspections—questioning the residents on all aspects of their beliefs and practice. Some of those who profess a “Reformed” faith today take Calvin’s Geneva as their model and thus hope to Christianize the United States—and then the world. Is it any wonder that much of the general public, accusing evangelicals of orchestrating a “vast right-wing conspiracy,” recoils in horror at such a thought?

Many Christian activists with looser attachments to Calvin hope to force an ungodly American citizenry into godly living. But is such an agenda within the will of God? No one ever worked so hard at attempting to do this, nor for so long a time, as John Calvin—whose “righteous” judgment dominated the people of Geneva for eight deadly years. Should today’s Christian leaders continue to laud a man whose behavior was often so far removed from the commandments of Christ and the example of Paul? Should believers seek to celebrate and emulate Calvin’s theology, which led to his ungodly reign as “protestant pope” of Geneva?

Honest Doubts: A Calvinist’s Honest Doubts—Resolved by Reason and God’s Amazing Grace (Paperback Book) – Discover the heart of a Calvinist “seeker”—and the surprising result of his quest for truth in this fictionalized but true-to-life dialogue: A Calvinist’s Honest DoubtsResolved by Reason and God’s Amazing Grace.

Psychology

Psychology and the Church – Critical Questions, Crucial Answers (Dave Hunt and TA McMahon) (Paperback Book) – Have believers compromised their God-given “birthright” by accepting counterfeit solutions to emotional and spiritual issues that are common to man? So prevalent is the use of psychotherapy among Christians today that many pastors themselves are either licensed therapists or are the greatest source of referrals to professional counselors…

The purpose of this book is not to attack or condemn evangelicals who are practicing psychotherapists or those who have been helped by what is commonly called “Christian Psychology.” Rather, this volume acknowledges the value of believers bearing one another’s burdens through prayer, fellowship, and the Word of God.

False Teachings, False Teachers, and Media and the Word of God

Showtime for the Sheep? (TA McMahon) (Paperback Book) – Tom observed a connection between The Passion and trends taking place among professing Bible believers, such as the increasing use of entertainment in presenting the gospel, the ecumenical relationship between Catholics and Evangelicals, the use of imagery verging on idolatry, and the major drift away from the objective Word of God in favor of the subjective, “feelings” oriented treatment of the Scriptures.

Temporal Delusion (TA McMahon – Paperback Book)- At this very moment, millions of professing Christians are joining with millions of other “believers” to promote peace and reconciliation across the country and around the globe. These pragmatic, purpose-driven churches and organizations are uniting for the ecumenical “common good” to eliminate poverty, eradicate disease, and save the earth from political and environmental disaster—all in the name of advancing “God’s kingdom on Earth.”

Yoga and the Body of Christ (Paperback Book) – Promising to bring peace, healing, and wholeness (even prosperity!) to its practitioners, readers will be shocked to discover that yoga is, in fact, based on the worship of (and prepares participants for supernatural connection with) unholy spirits that manifest in extraordinary and dangerous ways. The author—an avid promoter of biblically based physical, mental, and spiritual wholeness—distinguishes pure truth from popular belief in this revealing exposé. Every Christian should be informed of the true origins and effects of the practice of yoga and its ungodly roots in Kundalini energy—which, literally defined, means an awakening of the “Serpent Power.”

Islam

Judgment Day! Islam, Israel, and the Nations (Hardback Book) – This expanded third edition is the most comprehensive examination to date of ancient biblical prophecy and modern-day Middle East politics regarding Islam, Israel, and the nations—which includes the United States of America! Painstakingly researched using up-to-the-minute data, Judgment Day! is sure to become a respected resource for scholars, analysts, pastors, professors, politicians, and lay people alike.

Theology and Christian Edification

In Defense of the Faith – Volume One (Paperback Book) – With the keen eye of an experienced treasure hunter, the author helps readers probe and unearth the incredible wealth of guidance found in God’s Word. The resulting adventure will not only strengthen the faith of believers but equip them to live daily according to His revealed truth in an increasingly hostile world.

Finding Biblical Fellowship – “Over the past two-plus decades, the most common request that is received by the Berean Call staff is, ‘Can you help us find a good, solid church in our area?’ Over the years, Dave Hunt and T. A. McMahon have written material in an effort to help believers look for and find a church fellowship to which they can commit themselves and begin to use their gifts to minister to the saints.

Witnessing, Sharing the Gospel, and Salvation

An Urgent Call to a Serious Faith (Hardcover Book)- This edition is aimed at believers who understand the times and who desire to be equipped from God’s Word to minister effectively today.

Seeking and Finding God – In Search of the True Faith (Paperback Book) – Readers of Dave’s book, An Urgent Call to A Serious Faith, will recognize and appreciate that this handy volume includes revised versions of the first eight chapters of that powerful work, plus an entirely new chapter, which together serve to make this a powerful tool for evangelism and discipleship.

The Nonnegotiable Gospel (Copies of The Nonnegotiable Gospel) – Dave Hunt’s classic evangelism and discipleship resource.

To Russia with Love – “I warn you that the following pages will change your thinking and perhaps your life. Much will seem unbelievable – but it is all true. If you are an atheist or skeptic, your belief that God does not exist will be shaken and quite possibly shattered. If you are not a Christian, you will perhaps become one, as so many others have through reading this true story. And if you are a Christian, your faith will be strengthened and your life challenged. Whoever you are, you cannot help but be moved, both in sorrow and in joy…. This is not the story of Dave Hunt – I am only the narrator. It is Hans Kristian’s story, and I have told it in the first person so that you can experience it just the way he lived it.” Dave Hunt

Death of a Guru: The Testimony of a Brahmin Priest’s Search for Meaning – Rabi R. Maharaj was descended from a long line of Brahmin priests and gurus and trained as a Yogi. He meditated for many hours each day, but gradually disillusionment set in. He describes vividly and honestly Hindu life and customs, tracing his difficult search for meaning and his struggle to choose between Hinduism and Christ. At a time when eastern mysticism, religion and philosophy fascinate many in the West, Maharaj offers fresh and important insights from the perspective of his own experience. “A unique revelation of the inward struggles of a Hindu and the ultimate triumph over death that he discovered. I found it challenging and inspiring. Must reading.” – Hal Lindsey

Fiction

Mind Invaders (Originally titled: The Archon Conspiracy) (Paperback Book and Audio Book) – Discovering the CIA and Russian Intelligence’s battle for psychic control, famed journalist Carla Bertelli delves into the power behind the Archons. Convinced they are benevolent, she is devastated when Ken renounces the paranormal and embraces Christianity.

Sanctuary of the Chosen (Paperback Book – Audio Book) – Set during the height of the Cold War, Dave Hunt’s second novel focuses on the secret world of global warfare—not only between East and West, but for the ultimate control of planet Earth. Readers will be captivated by this heart-racing, history-based drama, which masterfully weaves the perils of international politics with Bible prophecy and spine-chilling manifestations of our spiritual battle. This captivating novel brings the shadowy world of undercover espionage, international intrigue, and demonic deception into razor-sharp focus—in a thrilling plot that could just as easily have been set in present day.

The Rapture and the Second Coming

Whatever Happened to Heaven? – Today, a growing number of Christians are exchanging the hope of the Rapture for a “new” hope—that Christians can clean up society and elect their own candidates to political office to make this world a “heaven on earth.” Bestselling author Dave Hunt probes the question “Whatever happened to heaven?” thoroughly and provides an easily understandable explanation of all the many issues and beliefs. Hunt shows us that heaven is really our home and brings fascinating new clarity to why we lost that hope and how it can be regained.

Countdown to the Second Coming (Paperback Book) – For those who seek to understand the times from a biblical perspective, this little volume provides a concise summary of historic and current world events that will excite, encourage, and equip God’s people to boldly proclaim the Gospel to this generation.

Peace, Prosperity, and the Coming Holocaust – In this timely reprint of Dave Hunt’s classic 1983 work, the author holds a remarkably steady balance between history and biblical prophecy that has withstood the test of time. The Bible declares that one-world government and universal New Age religion are coming. When we take God’s Word seriously, says noted author and cult expert Dave Hunt, ‘a door swings open to fascinating new insights…provided only that we take into consideration certain factors that most ‘experts’ on the future—both Christian and non-Christian—have overlooked.’ This is no ordinary gloom-and-doom forecast, but a startling revelation of facts not commonly known. Readers will gain valuable insight for today—and tomorrow—from this fascinating perspective Dave Hunt calls “a contrary scenario.”

Global Peace and the Rise of Antichrist (Paperback Book) – In this timely reprint of Dave Hunt’s classic 1990 work, the author holds a remarkably steady balance between history and biblical prophecy that has withstood the test of time. The Bible declares that one-world government and universal New Age religion are coming.

How Close Are We? (Paperback Book) – What are we waiting for? The early church believed that Christ could come at any moment. Today we may have lost that urgent sense of expectation—and the fire, passion, and motivation such a hope inspires. But He is coming, and we can renew our excitement for the future.

Dave Hunt and The Berean Call

While I do disagree with Dave on a few of his interpretations of eschatology (and quite frankly, I know of no one who I am in 100% agreement with, so that is not really surprising in the least), Dave’s interpretations, overall, are brilliant and always timely. Obviously, I would recommend his eschatological views, though I may disagree with a few of them, to the body of Christ.

All of Dave’s (and TA’s) books above, with a few exceptions, I have read – many times more than once – and thoroughly enjoyed them on every level. They are meticulous, compelling, captivating, informative, and, most importantly, comprehensively Scriptural. There is not a book or writing from Dave Hunt that I would not highly recommend to my brothers and sisters, and I would do so with determined persuasion. Dave, in my view, was simply the best!

In my early years of intense Bible study, with the gift of working for an organization where I was able to listen to Dave’s teachings online, I found myself growing with each teaching I heard. Again, Dave was so instrumental in my walk with the Lord. Therefore, I highly encourage my brothers and sisters to listen and watch his timeless teachings at the following links.

Personally, I was driven to Dave’s very cool voice: it was such an easygoing, calm, articulate and captivating voice that always drew me into what he was saying, always backed by Biblical Scriptures with a large dose of logic, rational thought, and common sense, just as all of his wonderful writings did. My sincere desire is that my writings also contain these wonderful qualities in edifying, encouraging, and enhancing Biblical understanding to the beloved body of Christ and for the glory of our worthy Creator, Lord, Savior, Redeemer, and King, the Lord Jesus Christ.

I would like to begin closing out our article in memory of my earthly mentor, Dave Hunt, by quoting from another of my favorite discernment ministries, Lighthouse Trails, when Dave had passed away.

To our Berean Call Family:

Friday, April 5, 2013, Dave Hunt drew his final breath and entered into the presence of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. His beloved wife Ruth was at his side.

Born in 1926, David Charles Haddon Hunt enjoyed the advantages of a godly upbringing and placed his trust in Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and Lord in his early teens.

As a young man, he served in the military toward the end of World War II. Afterward, he attended UCLA and received a degree in mathematics. It was during that time that he met the love of his life, Ruth Klassen. In 1950, they were married, and since both loved the outdoors, they enjoyed a beautiful honeymoon hiking in the High Sierras—perfect for two young people madly in love and with very little money to their name. Marriage was soon followed by the birth of two sons and two daughters. Ruth was a busy mother and also a gifted writer herself. She had a tremendous interest in and knowledge of history, a gift that would help Dave further down the road. Dave’s own career path led him into a position as a CPA/management consultant and later as the manager of several corporations.

Along with church-related activities, Dave initiated and became involved in numerous campus ministries and meetings in their home, with a special outreach to Jewish young people and foreign students. Many of these have stayed in touch with Dave and Ruth through the years, fondly recalling their times spent in Bible studies at the Hunts’ house.

Dave and Ruth also traveled abroad, spending time in various locations throughout Europe, meeting with believers there and ministering in many ways while raising their own family. Dave also brought Bibles and other materials into the Soviet Union during a time when it was very difficult to do so. Throughout his later years, he and Ruth traveled extensively as he was invited to speak in churches and fellowships, large and small, all over the world. Often, they stayed in people’s homes, dining with them, learning their customs, and sharing God’s Word and God’s love.

The desire of Dave’s heart was ultimately to be involved in full-time ministry, especially since he saw firsthand everywhere he went the breaking down of the true church as the world began to work its way into her midst. He began to write in 1973, warning believers about the incursion into Western culture and into the church itself of Eastern religion, psychological and selfist philosophies, ecumenism, and other unbiblical teachings.

The ministry of The Berean Call was founded by Dave in 1992. It grew out of a previous organization, of which Dave was also a founding member since 1986. With T.A. McMahon working alongside him at The Berean Call, Dave was able to share his love for and defense of Christ in the subsequent newsletters, books, videos, and speaking engagements that resulted from this ministry. Dave and T.A. wrote three books together, including the best-known The Seduction of Christianity, which was groundbreaking in its boldness, exposing false teachings in the church and daring to identify the names of the ones behind the deception.

By the early 2000s, Dave’s love for Christ and his desire to defend the name of the Lord had grown even stronger, and his concern over Islamic politics and religion is reflected in many of his articles, lectures, books, and interviews.

Then Richard Dawkins and the “new atheists” came onto the scene with a vengeance, seeking to destroy the very concept of God in the minds of everyone. Dave began to write and teach and speak more passionately than ever about the absolute truth that is in the Word of God and our need to immerse ourselves in it daily in order to prevent being taken up in the evolutionist delusion that is sweeping the world.

One of Dave’s favorite activities was to see whom God would seat next to him on airplanes as he traveled and spoke. He often said that he “could prove the existence of God” just by these providential occurrences. While writing about Islam, he would end up seated next to a Muslim who didn’t really understand what Islam was about but was eager to hear the difference between the Bible and the Qur’an. When writing about creation vs. evolution, the Lord would bring him, as a seat companion, an atheistic scientist who thought he had all the answers and was very surprised that there was another verifiable explanation to this universe.

Dave’s bold yet loving approach to any situation allowed him entrance into these conversations where many others would have been shut out. His love for Jesus, for Israel, and for people in general was obvious to all. His enthusiasm for the truth, along with his anger over the sin and wickedness that he knew was robbing people of what God wanted for them, flamed his desire to share the Lord with anyone with whom he had contact.

At least 4 million copies of his books have been sold, many of them translated into more than 50 languages…

… Dave Hunt’s own drive to find and then deliver the truth is evident in everything he did. His impeccable research and recognized scholarship were based on in-depth studies of original documents and publications, interviews with key experts from around the world, and extensive travel—including to South America, Australia, Europe, India, and throughout the Middle East.

Dave has left us a legacy of inestimable value. We are blessed to be able to see and hear and read what he has taught about the evidence for God in a breathtaking number of materials. From explaining about the history of Christianity, to exposing the deception that has crept into the church, to teaching about the prophecies that are being fulfilled even today, this humble, brilliant man will go on teaching us for a very long time. We look forward to the day when we will see him again.

Following Dave’s death and meeting His beloved Lord and Savior, his decades-long friend and partner, TA McMahon, took over the teaching and writing responsibilities at The Berean Call – which he also contributed to when Dave was alive – and did a wonderful job attempting to fill the immense shoes that Dave had left.

Years later, TA retired after a fruitful and honorable legacy with the organization he founded to promote Dave’s ministry to the church, and Rob Yardley, a longtime board member of The Berean Call, took over the ministry and has so far done a remarkable job of continuing the mission and purpose of The Berean Call.

My prayer is that the body of Christ will continue to be encouraged by the amazing and very needed ministry of The Berean Call and that they will find themselves persistently consuming, enjoying, and benefiting from the marvelous ministry resources that are produced today, while preserving the remarkable writings and teachings of my earthly mentor, Dave Hunt, for the body of Christ to appreciate until the Lord comes back for His bride to take us to His Father’s house.

Then my prayer will be that those resources of Dave’s that the body of Christ has preserved all over the world, along with precious copies of the Holy Bible, will find their way into the hands of the Tribulation Saints who will so desperately need them, gaining understanding of the Word of God, growing in the knowledge of their Savior, and loving with passion their Lord who saved their souls during the most horrific time in the history of the world.

Until then…

May we all keep Answering the Call of The Great Commission, and giving an answer to every man and woman who so desperately needs Jesus and asks us, “Why Am I Here and What Is It All About?
