To My Beloved Jewish People :: By Geri Ungurean

This was written in October of 2015.

I met the Messiah in 1983, and since then, my life has never been the same. It hasn’t been all wonderful. There were hurts and pain, but the difference was that I knew that the Lord was with me through everything. He became my life, and His Word, my sustenance.

I had been taught in synagogue to be very proud of my heritage as a Jew, but it meant nothing to me back then. Actually, the constant anti-Semitic remarks by kids in my neighborhood and school, fist fights in the street over being called names — I wasn’t exactly ecstatic about being a Jew. Also, the Old Testament confused me when I attempted to read it.

I also learned in the synagogue that Christians hated us, and they always had. You see, Jews look at Christianity as one unit. They have no idea about being truly born again from above — having a heart of stone being made into a heart of flesh, and God’s own Holy Spirit coming and dwelling within us. Jews look back at history and see Jewish blood spilled in the name of Christianity. It was only on this side of the Cross that I realized being a Christian had nothing to do with denomination or how ornate a church building was. None of that was important. My question to people was, “Do you know Jesus as your Lord and Savior?” And it was only after knowing Jesus that I appreciated and loved being a Jew.

Jews heard about people like Corrie Ten Boom, but I truly believe that they just thought of Corrie as one of a kind – a special lady. They were unable to see that it was the Lord in Corrie’s life and heart who made her into the loving woman she was, willing to sacrifice herself for the Jewish people. My people could not discern that some people were truly Christian, while most were just going through the motions.

But I think that Israeli Jews are beginning to be able to discern the Evangelicals from all others at last. They see that there are certain Christians who really love Israel. Bibi knows it, and many others too. I think this will be used by the Lord to bring more and more Jews to know Him.

Before I was saved, I had always had the feeling that the Catholics were the holy people. I suppose some of that came from their mass, which in many ways was like a service in the synagogue. Everything seemed so perfect, but I was searching for Jesus. I did go to a Catholic church to find Jesus, although that was short-lived. I did not see Him there.

AMERICAN JEWS

I have heard so many born-again believers ask why most Jews vote leftist and why most of them stand with Obama, even in 2012, after all he has said and done against Israel. The answer is not complex. I wish it were complex. The simple truth is that most Jews in America are secular Jews. They don’t believe the Bible, and many are agnostic or atheists. My own sisters do not believe in God, and they hate me for believing in Jesus. I find it interesting that my older sisters never received any instruction in Judaism, but my parents decided to send me. I am grateful that they did. I believe that the Lord’s Hand was on me all through my life.

My dad had grown up in Boston and was from an Orthodox family. He read and spoke Hebrew fluently. My mom was totally secular. Her parents had been gamblers in D.C., and Mom was regularly sent on a bus, at twelve years old, to pay off her parents’ debts. My parents met at the Jewish Community Center in D.C. at the beginning of WWII. They married soon after that.

Dad gave up his orthodox ways for Mom. So there we were, a secular Jewish family. My parents had told us that, as good Jews, we should be Democrats. It was expected. It was important. They made me believe that the Democrats were the party of compassion. I guess they missed the history of FDR sending away a ship of 900 frantic Jews from Europe wanting to come into America to escape the coming slaughter. FDR told Congress that the U.S. had enough Jews. Those Jews went back to Europe and eventually to the camps.

I guess they forgot that in the miraculous 6-day war of 1967, President Johnson (Democrat) said that Israel would stand alone if they defended themselves. He didn’t realize that God helped Israel. He didn’t care.

My dad, having had Hebrew instruction and a love for Torah, was different. He loved Israel. I remember during the 1960s, he had a picture of Nasser in our utility room — we threw darts at it. Dad loved Israel and sent money each year to them. I’m not sure if Mom knew that he did this. But Dad was still a Democrat.

When God saved me in 1983, I had been a registered Democrat. It had never occurred to me to be anything else. But as I read the Word every day, I realized that I could not reconcile the platform of the Democrats with God’s Word. I changed my political affiliation to Republican.

Mom told me in a stern voice that she could take my believing in Jesus, but she could not accept me being a Republican. She exclaimed, “I can’t believe I gave birth to a Republican!”

Before Dad died in 1997, the Lord allowed me to lead him in prayer to be saved. I had witnessed a lot to Dad when they moved to Florida for retirement. I sent him books and letters about Yeshua.

He wrote back to me that he was so proud that one of his children loved the Ten Commandments. He didn’t mention Jesus, but on his deathbed, he prayed the prayer of repentance and trusted Yeshua for his salvation.

ISRAELI JEWS

In Jerusalem, there are quite a few Orthodox Jews. They are conservative. They believe the Old Testament, and they know that God promised the land of Israel to Abraham and his descendants through Isaac. About 10% of Israel is Orthodox.

In contrast to Jerusalem, Tel Aviv is much like the majority of Jews here in America. Some of them want to split Israel and even Jerusalem for peace. They have no idea that it will not bring peace. They have no idea that it angers God when His land is divided.

And then there are the moderates, who love Israel and know the dangers that encircle them. They want to be safe. They don’t want to die. They want a strong leader like Netanyahu.

WHAT IS COMING

No person knows the time of the Rapture of the Church. But we do see the signs that this world is getting ready for something big. Anti-Semitism is at its highest point worldwide. There are wars and rumors of wars all around. There are earthquakes and all sorts of natural disasters. One of the most important fulfillments of prophecy was in 1948, when God brought His people from the four corners of the earth back to their own land.

“Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that the plowman shall overtake the reaper, and the treader of grapes him that soweth seed; and the mountains shall drop sweet wine, and all the hills shall melt. And I will bring again the captivity of my people of Israel, and they shall build the waste cities, and inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, and drink the wine thereof; they shall also make gardens, and eat the fruit of them. And I will plant them upon their land, and they shall no more be pulled up out of their land which I have given them, saith the Lord thy God” (Amos 9:13-15, KJV).

“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! Behold, your house is left unto you desolate. For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord” (Matthew 23:37-39, KJV).

I believe that those words will be among the sweetest that our Lord will ever hear.

My Jewish brothers and sisters, my prayer for you is that your eyes will be opened, and that you will understand that your Messiah came and you knew Him not. He is Yeshua (Jesus). He gave his life for you. You were hardened for a time so that the Gentiles could come into the Kingdom. You see, the plan of God was that through us (Jews) the whole world would be offered Salvation.

“And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob” (Romans 11:26, KJV).

When the last Gentile comes in, then your eyes will be opened and you will see Him clearly. He adores you!

I don’t know why He revealed Himself to me at this time. I’m so glad He did so that I can tell you that this is TRUTH. Now do you understand why the born-again Christians love Israel so much? The Law, the prophets, and Yeshua came from the Jewish people!

What’s not to love?

I pray that many will read this and that the Lord will draw them to Himself, and they will be saved.

ISAIAH 53

“Who has believed our report?
And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant,
And as a root out of dry ground.
He has no form or comeliness;
And when we see Him,
There is no beauty that we should desire Him.
 He is despised and rejected by men,
A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.
And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him;
He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.
 Surely He has borne our griefs
And carried our sorrows;
Yet we esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten by God, and afflicted.
 But He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
And by His stripes we are healed.
 All we like sheep have gone astray;
We have turned, every one, to his own way;
And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.
 He was oppressed and He was afflicted,
Yet He opened not His mouth;
He was led as a lamb to the slaughter,
And as a sheep before its shearers is silent,
So He opened not His mouth.
 He was taken from prison and from judgment,
And who will declare His generation?
For He was cut off from the land of the living;
For the transgressions of My people He was stricken.
 And they made His grave with the wicked—
But with the rich at His death,
Because He had done no violence,
Nor was any deceit in His mouth.
Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him;
He has put Him to grief.
When You make His soul an offering for sin,
He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days,
And the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand.
 He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied.
By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many,
For He shall bear their iniquities.
 Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great,
And He shall divide the spoil with the strong,
Because He poured out His soul unto death,
And He was numbered with the transgressors,
And He bore the sin of many,
And made intercession for the transgressors.”

My people – is that not a clear picture of the Messiah Yeshua (Jesus) going to the Cross for YOUR Salvation? He came, and you received Him not. But He is coming again, and your eyes will be opened.

Am Yisrael Chai!

Shalom b’Yeshua!

Gilded Ages: Solomon, 666, and Gold – Part 1 :: By Wilfred Hahn

Gold is back in the limelight. After a long period of dormancy, the price of gold bullion has soared. Since the 3rd quarter-end of 2022, the price of gold bullion has risen over 80% in US dollar terms. Such moves, of course, attract investors and speculators. What is the prognosis ahead?

Answering this question, it is timely to review the role of gold in the world … both future and past. For example, did you know that the Bible shows that there are at least five separate dispensations for gold?

As such, we will want to explore the information that the Bible gives us about gold and related trends. We begin with the historical role of gold.

To this point in history, the greatest period of power and wealth for Israel was during the reign of King Solomon. At this time, for the most part, Israel was at peace. Its land mass stretched from the Mediterranean and northern Egypt to outposts on the River Babylon.

Solomon received tributes and levies from many other kingdoms. First Kings 10 (and also 2 Chronicles 9) provides a snapshot of Solomon’s Golden Age, including the ostentatious visit by the Queen of Sheba. An excerpt from 1 Kings 10:21-26 provides an indication of Solomon’s grandeur:

“All King Solomon’s goblets were gold, and all the household articles in the Palace of the Forest of Lebanon were pure gold. Nothing was made of silver, because silver was considered of little value in Solomon’s days. The king had a fleet of trading ships at sea, along with the ships of Hiram. Once every three years, it returned carrying gold, silver and ivory, and apes and baboons. King Solomon was greater in riches and wisdom than all the other kings of the earth. The whole world sought audience with Solomon to hear the wisdom God had put in his heart. Year after year, everyone who came brought a gift—articles of silver and gold, robes, weapons and spices, and horses and mules. Solomon accumulated chariots and horses; he had fourteen hundred chariots and twelve thousand horses, which he kept in the chariot cities and also with him in Jerusalem. The king made silver as common in Jerusalem as stones, and cedar as plentiful as sycamore-fig trees in the foothills.”

We see that Solomon was wealthy beyond imagination. However, the Bible makes it clear that these riches were not a result of Solomon’s works, but rather a blessing from God. When Solomon asked God for understanding, the Lord responded thus:

“Behold […] I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee. And I have also given thee that which thou hast not asked, both riches, and honour: so that there shall not be any among the kings like unto thee all thy days” (1 Kings 3:12-13, KJV).

Yet, we also know that while God surely did deliver on His promise, Solomon did not finish his life faithfully. In time, he allowed the blessings themselves to corrupt him. As he gained power, honor, and influence, he began to break many of God’s commands. He wandered off to follow his own interests and indulgences. While tragic, it was not surprising. Only two generations earlier, Samuel had warned Israel about the dangers of appointing a king over them. Nevertheless, the people said: “We want a king over us. Then we will be like all the other nations” (1 Samuel 8:19b-20a).

Even earlier, Moses had expressly laid down requirements should Israel ever want a king. The king “must not acquire great numbers of horses for himself” (Deuteronomy 17:16). “He must not take many wives, or his heart will be led astray. He must not accumulate large amounts of silver and gold” (verse 17). Solomon did all of these things. He had thousands of horses, hundreds of wives and concubines.

Solomon built himself an immense palace, much larger than the temple he had built for the Lord. Moreover, he built himself an impressive throne (1 Kings 10:18-20). While God had told Moses never to build steps in front of any altar, Solomon elected to have six steps leading to his throne, with twelve golden lions placed upon them.

And, true to the prophecy of Samuel, the entire nation of Israel would end up being oppressed by their kings, both economically and otherwise (1 Samuel 8:10-18). This indeed proved to be the case with Solomon. Jeroboam, appealing to King Rehoboam (Solomon’s son), said: “Your father put a heavy yoke on us, but now lighten the harsh labor and the heavy yoke he put on us…” (2 Chronicles 10:4). Solomon had raised a levy upon all Israel, which proved punitive (1 Kings 5:13).

Other extra-biblical sources indicate that high levels of inflation existed during the later stages of Solomon’s reign. As a result, the population was in a complaintive mood, just as they would be today were inflation to rise uncontrollably.

A Foreshadowing: Solomon and 666

The account of Solomon’s reign holds many lessons, only a few of which we can explore in detail here. Interestingly, Solomon’s Golden Age provides a useful foreshadowing of another type of Gilded Age … one that the world is hankering after today.

The chapter of 1 Kings 11 is rather remarkable in several respects. In this one chapter is shown both the rise and fall of Solomon, providing another example of a man (mankind) receiving blessings but ultimately forgetting their source and conditional aspects. And, most curiously, the number 666 is mentioned.

What could this infamous number have to do with Solomon’s era, if anything? In this writer’s view, the mention of this number is neither accidental nor circumstantial. The Holy Spirit intended it for a reason.

In 1 Kings 10:14-15, we read: “The weight of the gold that Solomon received yearly was 666 talents, not including the revenues from merchants and traders and from all the Arabian kings and the governors of the land.” This surely was a large income. Based upon recent gold prices, this would amount to an annual income of about $2.8 billion USD. Adjusting for the fact that today’s economic accounting conventions are highly monetized, this number would have to be multiplied at least six times in our view. In those terms, his annual income would be closer to an equivalent of $16 billion per year. Actually, he had much more wealth, as our estimate does not include the value of trade. As the Bible states, no other king was as rich as he was during that time.

Let’s return to our examination of this curious number: “six hundred threescore and six,” as it is phrased in the King James translation. It comes up on only three occasions in the Bible. Most well-known is its reference in Revelation 13:18. Another mention is found in Ezra 2:13, where it refers to the number of Adonikam’s family that was returning to Jerusalem from Babylon. However, the parallel account in Nehemiah 7:18 counts them differently at 667. Given the possibility that this might be an inconsistency or copyist error, we will set it aside.

The first reference in the Bible to the number 666 appears in the two parallel records of the reign of King Solomon (1 Kings 10; 2 Chron. 9). In both, the number is mentioned specifically.

But why should its reference here attract further attention? There are at least two reasons. First, the number is incongruous with the rest of these two chapters. It sticks out like a sore thumb.

The two almost identical accounts employ many numbers in describing the reign of King Solomon and the opulence of his kingdom and possessions. For example, 300 concubines, 1400 chariots, 300 shields, and 12,000 horses are mentioned. Among more than 15 numbers (quantities) cited, there is found only one unusual and non-prime number—666. Of the 11 numbers greater than 100 employed in this chapter, only one of these is not rounded to the nearest one-hundredth or one-thousandth, or ending in zero. It is the number 666.

Secondly, the application and context of this number are ill-fitting. King Solomon’s annual income in terms of talents of gold “was 666 talents, not including the revenues from merchants and traders and from all the Arabian kings and the governors of the land” (1 Kings 10:14-15; 2 Chron. 9:13-14). The text clearly tells us that he had much greater revenues than 666 talents per year. Then, why is the odd number of 666 used in describing his income? It would be just as weird to express one’s hourly wage as $6.66, plus a whole lot more. In any case, it would be strange if Solomon’s gold income were not to fluctuate from year to year.

Therefore, we should conclude that this number is also meant to provide a symbolic connection. It may simply alert us to the fact that King Solomon commanded a prosperous and opulent economy, which then descended into idolatry and bureaucratic controls. It was not a “divine” economy but an enterprise of man, with all its usual defects and troubles. In the end, the bureaucracy under Solomon ended up becoming a type of oppressor. Says one commentator, “Solomon’s success came at the high price of individual freedom and tribal sovereignty.”1

The Simple Meaning of 666

666 surely is an infamous number among both Christians and non-Christians alike. However, before we comment any further, we’d best keep in mind the comment of Joseph Thayer (author of the Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament) concerning this number: “six hundred and sixty-six, the meaning of which is the basis of much vain speculation.” Given this alert, we will not embark upon any such speculation and will limit ourselves to the Bible’s plain meaning. Anything else would risk misdirection.

That said, there assuredly is a lot of nonsensical and ludicrous speculation as to the meaning of this number. Even well-known Bible teachers make speculative associations, employing numerology, arbitrary calculations (gematria), and other twists of mathematics.

One high-profile prophecy teacher with a large TV audience openly makes associations regarding the number 666, purely on the basis of the number values of English names. This is so spurious it hardly bears comment. For one, this practice presumes that the English language must be used to unlock the meaning of a text originally written in Greek. This is the equivalent of saying that all people—whether Chinese or Swahili speakers—must be required to first learn English before they can be allowed to read the Holy Scriptures. We may forget that the Bible’s words were inspired in Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek. Based on this theory, we must all first learn these three languages before we can study the Scriptures.

No doubt, many levels of meaning may be taken from the number 666. However, in essence, the Bible provides a fairly straightforward description. Said John the Revelator, “If anyone has insight, let him calculate the number of the beast, for it is man’s number. His number is 666” (Revelation 13:18). Clearly, the beast and man are together indicted in this passage. It is man’s number … representing his systems and beliefs and idolatries. These happen to be energized by the Prince of this World.

It should be noticed that the Revelator’s mention of the number 666 follows right after the verses that inform us that the false prophet will attempt to induce everyone to take the mark of the beast: “And he causeth all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and bond, to receive a mark in their right hand, or in their foreheads: And that no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark, or the name of the beast, or the number of his name” (Revelation 13:16-17, KJV).

There clearly is an obvious economic and financial connection. An idolatrous, manmade system of control is likely indicated, implying self-sufficiency and a reliance upon earthly materialism. Systems such as these are destined for destruction or break-up, as happened to Solomon’s kingdom. In this sense, we may find a common spirit connecting the later stages of Solomon’s reign, the number 666, and the yet future prophetic events.

Thoughts to Ponder

No doubt, today, the world is experiencing a remarkable era. Around the globe, unified financialization continues to gain influence. Mankind’s materialistic system—in its simplest form, symbolized by the number 666—is unstoppable … or so most people think. A grand, new, gilded era of peace and economic prosperity seems assured. It would be tempting to agree.

Nowhere is this confidence more evident currently than in the fields of global finance and economics. The popular and celebrated view is that globalization is leading to another Golden Age for mankind … the best and biggest ever … far better than the previous time that a similar confidence emerged. That period was referred to as the Gilded Age, occurring between 1880 and 1914. It also was a period of rapid technological progress and advances in globalization. Unfortunately, it ended horribly when the First World War erupted.

Solomon’s later reign of self-reliant commercialism and dependence upon a prosperous economy ended badly. So will the current one. The only difference is that today’s “gilded” confidence is more swaggering, unified, and globally pervasive than ever before. Its treacheries and deceits are therefore much larger and more dangerous. We surely are today experiencing the systemic rise of the 666 system, which will very soon intersect with the literal prophecies found in Revelation 13.

All of this may not sound very uplifting and optimistic—possibly echoing the doom-and-gloom ruminations of pessimistic, austere, unloving Bible thumpers. However, we can choose to view our current epoch from either of two perspectives: as did Abraham, “longing for a better country—a heavenly one” (Hebrews 11:16), or as “friends of the world” (James 4:4). Actually, the former is an optimistic view, the latter a pessimistic one. It is only “friends of the world,” with both feet firmly staked to hopes of a better and more comfortable place upon earth for a season, who will likely view the perspectives of a literally interpreted Bible as pessimistic.

Speaking of perspectives, have you ever wondered what that “great cloud of witnesses” (Heb 12:1) would think of our world today? Would they be observing mankind’s crowning capstone of humanism and materialism—man’s systemic number of 666—rapidly taking form? Would they be dismayed that humanity is yet again intoxicated by the vision of another Tower of Babel, saying, “Let us make a name” (Gen 11:4) and determine our own destiny? Above all, wouldn’t that cloud of witnesses be most grieved to see how many supposed Christians have been thoroughly blinded by the golden promises and cares of our present age?

Seen within the broad fabric of long-term world trends—not simply in the short-term, but as would the great cloud of heavenly witnesses—evident is a human timeline that the Bible has long prophesied. The world’s ultimate fate has been foretold by the prophets in no uncertain terms.

So, we see that the systemic aspects of the “beast,” symbolized by the number 666, are already operative in our day … right under our very noses, so to speak. Someday, this beast that comes out of the sea will be headed by the Antichrist and used to oppress the entire world. However, to the believing and pure Church, this will be of no concern. The Church—the Philadelphian church—will be kept from this future period. As Christ said to the Philadelphians, “I will also keep you from the hour of trial that is going to come upon the whole world to test those who live on the earth” (Revelation 3:10).

(In Part 2, we discuss the Bible’s perspective on gold and its future role.)
