God’s Covenant with Abraham :: By Sean Gooding

Genesis 15

Over the past few weeks, we have been looking at God’s promises to the nation of Israel. It is clear that God is not done with Israel. Jesus, as we have pointed out, is a Jew, born in the line of Judah and through Mary, the rightful heir to David’s throne. In 1 Kings 9:5, we see this promise to David,

“Then I will establish the throne of your kingdom over Israel forever, as I promised David your father, saying, ‘You shall not fail to have a man on the throne of Israel.'”

There are many other verses like this, but God often makes a promise to David that He, God, will establish David’s throne forever and that he, David, will always have a man to sit on the throne of Israel.

In Psalm 89: 30-37, we find these verses,

“If his sons forsake My law and do not walk in My judgments, If they violate My statutes And do not keep My commandments, Then I will punish their transgression with the rod and their iniquity with stripes. But I will not break off My loving-kindness from him, nor deal falsely in My faithfulness. My covenant I will not violate, nor will I alter the utterance of My lips. Once I have sworn by My holiness, I will not lie to David. His descendants shall endure forever and his throne as the sun before Me. It shall be established forever like the moon, and the witness in the sky is faithful.

God promises not to break the promises nor lie to David concerning his descendants; God promises David that his throne will endure forever and that it will be established forever. These are promises that are rooted in the passage that we are going to explore today. God made promises to Abraham; these are passed on to Isaac and Jacob. This particular promise that we will explore is conformed to us in the Hebrews 6,

“For when God made a promise to Abraham, because He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself, saying, ‘Surely blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply you.’ And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise” (NKJV).

This is all a bit of setup to give us some context for the lesson in Genesis 15. This is a strange chapter if you are not familiar with the history of the time and the idea here. This all sounds like a gruesome ritual, and yet it is important. God used some of the customs of man at the time to set up a covenant with Abraham. So, let’s explore this ritual and see what God did here.

God comforts Abram and assures him that He is on his side. In Genesis 15:7, He makes a promise that He, God, will give Abram the land as an inheritance. Abram asks ‘How will I know?” A legit question. God then sets about to use a common ritual that Abram would have been familiar with to establish this promise. In Genesis 15: 9-10, here is the instruction,

“So He said to him, ‘Bring Me a three-year-old heifer, a three-year-old female goat, a three-year-old ram, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.’ Then he brought all these to Him and cut them in two, down the middle, and placed each piece opposite the other; but he did not cut the birds in two.”

This was a common occurrence in Abram’s time. Two kings or chiefs from warring nations in particular, or at least two nations, would make a covenant of peace. They would take an animal or animals and cut them in half, allowing the blood to pool in between them. Then, the two parties would walk through the blood and, by so doing, establish whatever covenant they had made. This covenant was in force until one of the parties died. This is where the ritual takes a bit of a turn. God allows Abram to fall asleep, Genesis 15:12,

“Now when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and behold, horror and great darkness fell upon him.”

This leaves just God to perform the ritual, and He swears this promise in verses 18-19,

“On the same day, the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying: ‘To your descendants I have given this land, from the river of Egypt to the great river, the River Euphrates— the Kenites, the Kenezzites, the Kadmonites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.'”

God did the ‘swearing’; Abram had nothing to do with it. God swore by Himself, and since He will never die, the promise is still in effect today. The land belongs to the descendants of Abram; it is an eternal promise that God must keep because, as God said to David, He, God, cannot lie, and for David to have a man on the throne of Israel forever, there must actually be an Israel.

I have had many discussions over the years, and not too long ago, about this very matter of literal Israel being back in the Promised Land and being the focus of God’s redemption plan. There are so many who think that God is done with Israel and invariably want to do away with the Old Testament. They hardly read the prophets and cannot seem to grasp the importance of God keeping His promises to Abram and David. If He can lie to them, He can lie to us. But God cannot lie; the nation of Israel, Abram, Isaac, and Jacob can be as secure now in the promises that God made as we can be in the promise of eternal life. David can be secure in the promise God made to him about the throne of Israel as we can be about the security of our salvation. God simply cannot break promises.

I leave you with a rhetorical question from Numbers 23:19; you should be able to answer this yourself and find your security and the security of Israel,

“God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?”

God bless you,

Unleashed :: By Candy Austin

Unleashed: cause (a strong or violent force) to be released or become unrestrained: “set loose.”

Unleash is a verb that means to release or let loose something powerful that cannot be controlled or that happens suddenly.

Normally, my articles are about living the life of a Christ Follower and are intended to be an uplifting and encouraging voice in a news sea of gloom and doom. But this week, the Holy Spirit has impressed upon my heart to write about the soon-coming Tribulation and the severity of God’s long-suffering and stored-up wrath that is about to be unleashed on this willfully ignorant, unbelieving, extremely wicked, and disgustingly sinful world! A world, mind you, that has been mockingly taunting and practically begging for Almighty God’s Fury to be poured out upon it for quite some time now!

In the events that are soon to come upon this entire earth, which are recorded in God’s Holy Word, we read about a time that is called the Great Tribulation. One which details the unleashing of God’s holy and righteous anger and pent-up wrath upon a well beyond deservingly wicked and Christ-rejecting world!

BIBLE VERSES ABOUT THE GREAT TRIBULATION (kingjamesbibleonline.org)

As a limited and finite being, and as a former Sign Language Interpreter whose job was to translate things visually for the Hearing Impaired, I will attempt to describe this as an analogy by inviting us to try and imagine ‘the unleashing of God’s Wrath’ as a scene being played out. OK, here goes: imagine a row of multiple rabid, angry, and large dogs who are just a few feet away, mind you, and who are all on leashes while uncontrollably and loudly barking, savagely foaming at the mouth, aggressively jumping, wildly pacing, and fiercely growling! Think attack dogs who are just ‘chomping at the bit’ to be set loose so that they can furiously run and attack their prey with reckless abandon!

Now imagine that these beasts are instead ravenous and bloodthirsty lions who have been finally set free to devour the unwitting by eagerly and hungrily wrapping their mouths around and sinking their jaw-clenching teeth into their target while unrestrainedly ripping it apart with sheer and utter voracity!

Talk about not wanting to remotely be a part of this scene or even happen to be in their line of sight at that particular moment! Yet, even this feeble attempt at trying to visualize this as an analogy of God’s righteous wrath being poured out onto the wicked and ungodly obviously pales in comparison to what the Bible has famously outlined in the book of Revelation and other chapters as well! Details that are pretty much beyond our ability to fully grasp, envision, or even fathom, yet we know it will be a literal nightmare, to say the least, to even be alive on this planet at that time!

To be honest, I wouldn’t blame God if He poured out His holy and righteous anger onto the whole world at this very minute, even though we, His Church, who have the restraining influence of the Holy Spirit, are still here! That’s how deservingly wicked and evil we, as people in general, really are! For it is written, no one is good, no one is righteous, no, not one!

What does it mean that “there is none who does good, no not one” (Psalm 14:3; Romans 3:12)? | GotQuestions.org

(((But God.))) Those 2 words speak volumes about the ‘immense grace’ He has for this sin-sick world! Thereby, since God gave His only begotten Son Jesus Christ to come here and shed His precious blood to suffer and die in our place, those of us who have trusted in the finished work of Jesus Christ are therefore saved and born again into a living hope! We have now become His Church, which is also called the Bride of Christ! What a blessing it is to be His Bride! Hallelujah!

Romans 8:1 “There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.”

As His Bride/Church, we read that we are no longer under condemnation as those who are rebelliously lost and living in continuous and willful sin are. This should be comforting to the Believer in knowing this and in the knowledge of our ‘Blessed Hope’ redemption as well because what is about to be unleashed on this earth in the not-too-distant future is something that this world has never seen before nor will ever see again according to God’s Holy Word!

Titus 2:13 “Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Savior Jesus Christ.”

To be under the soon-coming wrath of an Almighty God who holds the very lives and breath of every single person on this planet in His Righteous and Sovereign Hands should cause every soul here to want to forsake evil and repent as soon as humanly possible! If only everyone in the world would trust, believe, and understand what God’s Word has to say in His warning them of this impending time that is about to come!

Matthew 24:21 “For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.”

Matthew 24:21 Commentaries: “For then there will be a great tribulation, such as has not occurred since the beginning of the world until now, nor ever will. (biblehub.com)

Excerpts from Commentaries:

Barnes’ Notes on the Bible: There shall be great tribulation – The word “tribulation” means calamity or “suffering.” Luke 21:24 has specified what this tribulation would consist of: “They shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations, and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles shall be fulfilled.” That is, until the time allotted for the Gentiles “to do it” shall be fully accomplished, or as long as God is pleased to suffer them to do it.

Pulpit Commentary: Mark, I pray thee, the exceeding greatness of the ills, when not only compared with the time before, they appear more grievous, but also with all the time to come. For not in all the world, neither in all time that is past, and that is to come, shall any one be able to say such ills have been. And very naturally; for neither had any man perpetrated, not of these that ever have been, nor those to come hereafter, a deed so wicked and horrible” (‘Hom.,’ in loc.). The “affliction” spoken of refers not only to bodily sufferings but to that anguish of mind occasioned by acute apprehension and. expectation of danger, such as was felt in the days before the Flood, and at the time of the oppression of Antiochus Epiphanes.

Matthew 24:21, Geneva Study Bible: “For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.”

Bengel’s Gnomen: Ἀπʼ ἀρχῆς κόσμου, from the beginning of the world) in the time of the Deluge, etc. – End Source

As you can see from these biblical commentaries of old, the righteous and long-suffering patience of God’s restrained wrath that is about to burst like a pent-up dam onto the scene, aka ‘will finally be set loose and unleashed’ onto a willfully wicked and utterly sinful world is beyond that of any of our wildest imaginations! For it is going to be a period of time that has never been experienced before, even throughout all of the tragedies and atrocities that have occurred in this earth’s history (think the worldwide deluge of Noah’s time), and is one that, thankfully, according to God’s immense grace, never will be seen again thereafter!

As difficult as this may be, try to imagine the experience of this time by thinking of some of our worst nightmares in this life/world – and times that by infinity – and even that still does not fully convey or describe what the time of the Great Tribulation will remotely be like! (Think sounds of trumpets, of seals being opened, earthquakes, hail, fire, blood, gore, death, murderous spirits, evil at every turn, famine, bitter waters, hunger, disease, painful boils, excruciating stings from supernatural insects, wanting to die but cannot, the sun, moon, and stars being darkened, and these descriptions are just ramping up and getting started too!)

The Events of the Tribulation Period | Bible.org

All I know from my God-given discernment and from reading His Holy Word is that no one, and I mean no one, will wish or want to be here during that beyond-description and utterly horrendous period of time! Sadly, many, if not most, people who are alive during the imminent Rapture of the Church will be left behind here to go through and endure this harrowing and horrific experience! Many of whom thought that they were Christians by being self-deceived in their wrong beliefs will be left behind here! That’s why it is imperative that we know God’s Word and believe rightly about the Savior and Lord Jesus Christ!

ACTS 4:12 KJV “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby…” (kingjamesbibleonline.org)

For there is no other name whereby men are to be saved but Jesus! (Acts 4:12 “Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”) Apparently, untold numbers will come to Jesus Christ during this time period as well, but not without a cost, for many will lose their lives by being beheaded for their faith by refusing to show their allegiance to the Antichrist and accepting his Mark of the Beast (666) but who instead chose to show their allegiance to the One True God and Savior by standing firmly in their faith in the Lord Jesus Christ!

Revelation 20:4 “And I saw thrones, and they sat upon them, and judgment was given unto them: and I saw the souls of them that were beheaded for the witness of Jesus, and for the word of God, and which had not worshipped the beast, neither his image, neither had received his mark upon their foreheads, or in their hands; and they lived and reigned with Christ a thousand years.”

This is why now would be a perfect time for you to choose not only life instead of death for right now but also choose life eternal for the hereafter! One can do this by turning to Jesus Christ (which is repenting from their unbelief in Him to now believing in the gospel message of Jesus and what He did for all of us on the cross)! True saving faith belief transforms us from the inside out through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, which will cause us to have new affections! We will no longer be the same, nor will we want to live for ‘self’ anymore, but we will want to now live for Christ and be pleasing to Him in everything we think, do, and say instead!

What this looks like when a person is born again is that there will be fruit in that person’s life (Fruit of the Spirit: Love, Joy, Peace, Long-Suffering, Gentleness, Goodness, Faith, Meekness, and Temperance); this ultimately shows that they will no longer be the same! Make sure that you know that you know that you know that you are truly saved and are not being self-deceived because what is about to come upon this earth is something that no one, and I do mean no one, will want to be here for! Avoid this time period of the unleashing of God’s Holy and Righteous Wrath, which has never before been seen or paralleled nor will ever be thankfully thereafter! You’ll be glad that you did!
