America’s Moral War from Within :: By Travis A. Karnes

America stands upon a moral precipice. The conflict that now engulfs her is not chiefly the work of foreign adversaries or distant powers. It is a war launched from within her own gates—a spiritual, cultural, and institutional assault upon the foundations that once made this nation a city set upon a hill. What we are witnessing is the open advancement of a spirit of rebellion against the living God: a calculated campaign to dethrone the Lord Jesus Christ from the public square while elevating the symbols and doctrines of darkness under the false banners of tolerance, diversity, and inclusion.

This is no mere political contest; it is a moral war for the soul of a people. As the prophet Hosea declared, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge” (Hosea 4:6). And as the Apostle Paul warned the Ephesian believers, “For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places” (Ephesians 6:12).

When the Gates Are Opened to the Adversary

In Ottumwa, Iowa, a city council meeting—charged with the sober business of local self-government—opened with an invocation addressed not to the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, but to the “Dark Father.” The speaker, a member of The Satanic Temple, urged those assembled to “embrace the Luciferian impulse to eat of the Tree of Knowledge,” to cast off “arcane doctrines born of fearful minds,” and concluded with the brazen cry, “Hail Satan.”

A local pastor rightly rose and declared that a curse had been spoken over the city, demanding that it be reversed. Yet the machinery of municipal policy, bound by its own commitment to nondiscrimination, could offer only a moment of silence and the sterile defense that government “cannot discriminate against a denomination.”

A similar scene unfolded in Battle Ground, Washington. An open-invocation policy, intended by some to restore a measure of Christian acknowledgment in civic life, resulted in a representative of The Satanic Temple delivering the first official prayer: “Hail Satan and hail yourself.” Secular commentators now declare this the inevitable fruit of so-called “Christian nationalism,” claiming that any attempt to acknowledge the God of our fathers invites the devil to the podium. This is a half-truth weaponized into a full deception. The vacuum left by a people who have largely abandoned the public recognition of the true God is being filled, not by neutral silence, but by those who deliberately invoke the spirit of rebellion.

Scripture is unambiguous concerning such acts: “Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord’s table, and of the table of devils” (1 Corinthians 10:21). The early Church Fathers understood this with clarity. Justin Martyr observed that the devil, being the enemy of God, has long devised counterfeit systems and pagan expressions to lead men away from the truth. Augustine, in The City of God, recognized the same adversarial strategy at work in the religious systems of the nations.

The modern invocation of “Satan” as a symbol of rebellion is not harmless theater. It is the deliberate public elevation of a spirit that Scripture identifies as the adversary of every good work: “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour” (1 Peter 5:8).

When the State Demands the Church’s Silence

While civic chambers open their doors to the language of darkness, the state advances another front against the light. In California, Governor Newsom has signed legislation requiring employers—without clear and explicit exemption for churches and religious organizations—to train their staff in “anti-hate speech” protocols. Speech that “vilifies, humiliates, or incites hatred” based on protected characteristics must be identified and confronted.

Christian teaching on marriage, sexuality, and the created order of male and female is already branded by the cultural priesthood as hatred. Now the state moves to compel the very institutions charged with proclaiming the Word of God to police their own speech according to the shifting definitions of the sexual revolution.

This is not neutrality. This is the state declaring itself the final arbiter of moral truth and demanding that the church bow the knee. The prophet Isaiah pronounced woe upon those who “call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness; that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter” (Isaiah 5:20). The Lord Jesus Himself declared, “Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men” (Matthew 5:13).

When government requires the church to retrain its own conscience according to the state’s definitions, it has crossed from legitimate civil authority into the realm of spiritual usurpation. As the apostles boldly affirmed, “We ought to obey God rather than men” (Acts 5:29).

When the Children Are Catechized in Darkness

In the schools—those institutions once entrusted with the formation of the next generation—Coming Out Day is celebrated as a civic rite. Children are encouraged to define themselves by disordered desires, while any biblical witness is increasingly treated as the true threat. The same spirit that hails Satan in the city council chamber demands that the public school system become a temple of sexual identity ideology. The same spirit that refuses to exempt the church from compelled speech training insists that Christian conviction has no place in the education of the young.

The Word of God is clear: “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6). Yet when the state assumes the role of primary catechist and instructs the young in the rejection of God’s created order, it fulfills the solemn warning of Romans 1: “Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen” (Romans 1:25). The consequences inevitably follow: “And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind” (Romans 1:28).

The Clear Testimony of the Founders and a President

President Ronald Reagan understood the stakes with uncommon clarity. He declared, “Without God, there is no virtue because there is no prompting of the conscience… Without God, there is a coarsening of the society; without God, democracy will not and cannot long endure. If we ever forget that we are One Nation Under God, then we will be a nation gone under.” He further observed that the Founding Fathers believed faith in God was the key to our being a good people and America’s becoming a great nation.

The American Founders spoke with one voice on this matter. George Washington, in his Farewell Address, declared: “Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of patriotism who should labor to subvert these great pillars of human happiness, these firmest props of the duties of men and citizens.” He added the caution that “reason and experience both forbid us to expect that national morality can prevail in exclusion of religious principle.”

John Adams was equally direct: “Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.” He further affirmed, “I will avow that I then believed, and now believe, that those general principles of Christianity are as eternal and immutable as the existence and attributes of God.”

Thomas Jefferson trembled for his country when he reflected that God is just and that His justice cannot sleep forever.

Benjamin Franklin, addressing the Constitutional Convention, declared: “I have lived, Sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth—that God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without his aid?”

Patrick Henry proclaimed: “It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religions, but on the Gospel of Jesus Christ.”

Samuel Adams warned that “bad men cannot make good citizens,” and that “a vitiated state of morals, a corrupted public conscience, is incompatible with freedom.”

Noah Webster stated with precision: “No truth is more evident to my mind than that the Christian religion must be the basis of any government intended to secure the rights and privileges of a free people.”

John Jay, the first Chief Justice of the United States, reminded the nation that we must never forget the God from whom our blessings flowed.

These were not the sentiments of men seeking to impose a theocracy in the caricatured modern sense. They were the sober conclusions of statesmen who understood that liberty without virtue collapses into license, and license into tyranny.

The Only Path of Resistance

The moral war from within will not be won by those who seek a seat at the table of cultural respectability. It will be won by those who, like the prophets of old, stand and declare the whole counsel of God without apology. It will be won by churches that refuse to be trained by the state in the art of self-censorship. It will be won by parents who reclaim the education of their children. It will be won by citizens who understand that a city council chamber is not neutral ground, and that “Hail Satan” is not merely offensive speech—it is an act of spiritual aggression that must be met with spiritual resistance.

Scripture is clear and urgent: “If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land” (2 Chronicles 7:14).

The Apostle Paul commands, “Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil” (Ephesians 6:11).

And the Lord Jesus Himself has already secured the final victory: “These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).

The enemy is now within the gates. Yet the Captain of our salvation has not abandoned the field. Let the church rise—not in the power of political strategy alone, but in the power of the Holy Spirit—and let her declare once more, with the authority of heaven: “The Lord, He is God; the Lord, He is God” (1 Kings 18:39).

Anything less is surrender in the moral war from within.

Maranatha.
