Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., stood before the Republican Midterm Convention last Thursday night and delivered a message especially for those who traditionally vote Democrat. Kennedy spent most of his 72 years identifying with the Democratic Party. His father was a Democratic senator, attorney general and presidential candidate. His uncle was President John F. Kennedy. Yet Kennedy told Republicans, “I mourn the fact that neither my father nor my uncle would recognize the Democratic Party of today.”
Kennedy was asking longtime Democrats a simple question: Does the party you support today still represent the principles that caused you, your parents, or your grandparents to support it?
Kennedy described the Democratic Party of his youth as the party of working people, laborers, police officers, firefighters, and the middle class. He recalled that John Kennedy campaigned for tax cuts, strong national defense and opposition to communism. Kennedy remembered Democrats as defenders of the Bill of Rights, particularly what he called “unbridled free speech,” and as skeptics of concentrated government and corporate power.
His argument is that the party gradually became dominated by political, corporate, and cultural elites while becoming increasingly comfortable with government intervention in Americans’ lives.
If you are a Democrat or are considering voting for Democrats, Kennedy’s warning deserves serious examination.
Kennedy charged that Democrats had “systematically obliterated the Bill of Rights,” especially during COVID. He pointed to government pressure on social-media companies over speech; COVID mandates shutting down churches and public gatherings; vaccine mandates involving employment and personal medical decisions; and government actions infringing on privacy, property and due-process protections.
Kennedy has criticized both parties over constitutional liberties, but says the assault intensified under Biden. His broader argument is that a party once suspicious of centralized authority increasingly embraced institutional power to accomplish its objectives. He also charged that opposition to Donald Trump became such an overriding Democratic political cause that it displaced the principles and policies that once defined the party.
Political parties change. Candidates change. Platforms change. Our responsibility before God remains. Jesus said in Matthew 7:16, “You will know them by their fruits.” That is a pretty good standard for politics, too.
Look beyond television commercials, party labels, personalities, and inherited loyalties. Examine what candidates advocate, what their parties actually do, and what fruit their policies produce.
Kennedy changed his political allegiance after concluding that the party of his father and uncle had radically changed. Every voter, Republican, Democrat, or independent, should periodically conduct that same examination. Elections require choices, and those choices deserve something deeper than habit or family tradition.
Know the fruit. Discern the truth. Then vote your conscience. Share this with your Democrat friends and family.
