Thou Art the Son of God :: By Geri Ungurean

“But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary.

“And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea. And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.

“But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid. And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.

“But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me. And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?

“And when they were come into the ship, the wind ceased. Then they that were in the ship came and worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God” (Matthew 14:24-33).

Brethren, the times we are in are without a doubt troubling and scary. We love our Lord Jesus, and we know that He has all things in His hand. We know that He is in control of everything. But we are still in this flesh that fails us.

Paul spoke of this, and his words have helped me so many times in my walk with Christ:

“For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin. For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I. If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good.

“Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.

“For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. I find then a law, that, when I would do good, evil is present with me.

For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.

“O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin” (Romans 7:14-25).

How many times have we felt this way? We want to do that which is right. We want to believe and have the faith that we know we should have. But we fail at times, don’t we? Our wicked flesh wars against our mind; and in our mind, we have His Word.

“Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee” (Psalm 119:11).

So, brothers and sisters in Christ, we must pray for one another and encourage one another in these times. We must take the Hand of our Lord as He reaches out for us through His holy Word.

We must keep our eyes focused on Him and not on the turmoil which thrashes about us like the waves of the sea.

And when we stumble and fear grips us, we must know that the Lord understands and is waiting patiently for us to take our eyes off of the things which frighten us and back onto Him.

He has given us His Word to sustain us, especially in times like these.
