Bringing Life to Dead Bones (Ezekiel 37:1-14) :: By Dr. Donald Whitchard

The thirty-seventh chapter of Ezekiel presents what, on the surface, seems to be a story of desolation and ruin that is beyond any hope of restoration by human standards. This chapter describes a tragic episode in the history of Israel as a nation. It paints a bleak picture of its past but also shows that God, although He had punished them for their idolatrous and wicked ways, He was not and is not finished with them. The Jews are the proof of God’s existence and the fact that He has kept a covenant with them that has not been broken, even in the worst of times.

When I say that the Jews are proof that God is real, what is meant by that statement?

Historians and sociologists will tell you that whenever a nation is destroyed, either by war or interior factors and the citizens of that nation are scattered elsewhere, it does not take but two to three generations whereby the language and the culture of that nation will gradually cease to exist as new generations assimilate to the culture in which they now live.

By that reasoning — after the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem and Judea in AD 70 by the hands of the Romans — those Jews that survived and scattered to other parts of the Roman Empire should begin to lose their national identity, history, language, culture, and religion because their original country no longer existed and they were expected to adapt to the ways of Rome. It did not happen, as the Jews were forced to wander from country to country for the next two thousand years, each generation experiencing prejudice and ostracism. The ultimate persecution occurred under the devil-possessed Nazi regime of Adolf Hitler, who had developed the idea of a “Final Solution” to get rid of the Jews, whom he saw as the main culprit in tearing apart the German Empire after World War I.

World history has not been kind to the Jewish people, but God has always protected and preserved them in terms of culture, language, history, and faith. The Jews have not changed as a people or nationality, but He has dealt severely with those nations and governments that would try to rid the world of His chosen people, and the results are frightening.

In the opening verses of Chapter 37, the prophet Ezekiel is taken by “the Spirit of the LORD” to a valley full of bones, symbolizing the apparent end of the Jewish nation at the hands of its enemies. God shows that He is the Final Authority not only concerning Israel but of both history and creation. Everything begins and ends by His Sovereign will (Genesis 1:1; John 1:1-4; Colossians 1:16-18).

Starting with verses 1-14, we read the following:

“THE hand of the LORD came upon me and brought me out in the Spirit of the LORD, and set me down in the midst of the valley; and it was full of bones. Then He caused me to pass by them all around, and behold, there were very many in the open valley; and indeed they were very dry. He said to me, ‘Son of man, can these bones live?’ So, I answered, ‘O LORD God, you know.’ Again He said to me, ‘Prophesy to these bones and say to them, ‘O dry bones, hear the Word of the LORD! Thus says the LORD God to these bones, ‘Surely, I will cause breath to enter into you, and you shall live. I will put sinews on you, and bring flesh upon you, cover you with skin and put breath in you, and you shall live. Then you shall know that I AM THE LORD.’

“So, I prophesied as I was commanded; and as I prophesied, there was a noise, and suddenly a rattling; and the bones came together, bone to bone. Indeed, as I looked, the sinews and the flesh came upon them, and the skin covered them over; but there was no breath in them. Also, He said to me, ‘Prophesy to the breath, prophesy, son of man, and say to the breath, ‘Thus says the LORD GOD, ‘Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe on these slain, that they might live.’ So, I prophesied as He commanded me, and breath came into them, and they lived, and stood upon their feet, an exceedingly great army.’

“Then He said to me, ‘Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. They indeed say, ‘Our bones are dry, our hope is lost, and we ourselves are cut off!’ Therefore, prophesy and say to them, ‘Thus says the LORD God: ‘Behold, O My People, I will open your graves and cause you to come up from your graves, and bring you into the land of Israel. Then you shall know that I am the LORD, when I have opened your graves, O My people, and brought you up from your graves. I will put My Spirit in you, and you shall live, and I will place you in your own land. Then you shall know that I am the LORD, have spoken it and performed it’, says the LORD” (NKJV).

When Ezekiel wrote down these words, the land of Israel had become a barren wasteland. The people had either been killed or exiled to Babylon by this time. The kingdom of Israel was gone for good in their eyes. They would not know what it would be like to be back in the land for another seventy years. Israel’s hopes for the future were dead and buried forever, or so it seemed.

Let this be a lesson to every one of us that what looks impossible on the surface is no match for the power of God. The dry bones and their supernatural assembly by the creative Word of the LORD show that the powers of death and despair vanish in His presence. God’s demonstration of His power contains assurance beyond the revival of Israel as a nation. Ezekiel’s vision shows that Israel is an earthly clay out of which God will call into being the people of His eternal kingdom.

He brings life to the dead soul and salvation not only to Israel but to a world deserving nothing but judgment and eternal wrath (Romans 5:6-11). He takes our seemingly dead and dry existence and transforms us into new creations through the power and work of the Lord Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17). God offers life, purpose, mercy, and grace to all who come to Him in faith. He can take your life and make it into something wonderful, both here and in terms of eternity. Turn from your sins and allow your dry bones to be revived by the power, mercy, and saving grace today. Come to Him – and live.

Reset or Rapture?

Geopolitical dynamics are at a fever pitch. That is, there is chaos in every direction we look. There is a sense of a mighty shaking within the stratospheric global powers that be.

Rather than making great progress toward instituting their much-ballyhooed Great Reset, those powers are, while God restrains, bumping in a lurching fashion against one barrier after another to their blueprint to Build Back Better.

It is as if they sense viscerally that they must have everything in place no later than the year 2030 for whatever is coming next in the evolution of humankind. And this is something they themselves must control, or else the planet is doomed.

We who observe the world as it has morally degraded to this point sense just as strongly as the globalist elites that there is indeed a reset that needs to take place. We, through frustration and Lot-strength vexation, sometimes feel as if we, too, are bumping up against barriers to the great change we desire more than anything. Why does the Rapture not happen? is the lament from many of us in this camp. And there is no doubt from this pre-Trib viewpoint: Planet Earth is indeed facing doom.

We have looked at before in this column the human-centered drive toward having everything in place for the Great Reset. Now, with the turmoil boiling more intensely by the day, with America’s unique position of nation-state dominance, but in chaotic upheaval politically, the holdup to implementation of their “Build Back Better” effort is exacerbated.

Here, again, is the story of the dilemma the New World Order-builders face.

The United Nations will meet in September for the 79th session of the UN General Assembly, as well as the highly-anticipated “Summit of the Future” where nations will sign the so-called “Pact for the Future.” The Pact is expected to call for declaring a “planetary emergency.” What does this agreement and its policies mean for the future of individual and national sovereignty?

By the end of September, the United Nations member states may vote to radically alter the UN itself, what some are calling UN 2.0, and the very nature of how nation-states make decisions regarding the future of the planet. The UN will convene for the 79th session of the General Assembly starting on September 10th in New York City. The high-level general debate will begin on the 24th of September.

Although the UNGA is an annual meeting, this year’s gathering will be unique because of the addition of the Summit of the Future, a UN-sponsored event taking place in NYC on the 22nd and 23rd of September. The summit has been in the making since at least 2022. It is the latest attempt by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to “rally the troops” and garner more support for a rapid completion of the Agenda 2030 goals set by the UN in 2015.

In May 2023, Guterres revealed that efforts to complete Agenda 2030 and the corresponding Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were failing. Guterres warned that only 12 percent of the SDGs were on track to be completed. He said progress on 50 percent of the goals is “weak and insufficient,” while 30 percent of the SDGs have “stalled or gone into reverse.” He predicted that if the current trend holds, only 30 percent of nations will accomplish SDG1, focused on poverty, by 2030…

For those reading between the lines and seeing through the buzzwords, the language of these documents rings of globalist-speak intended to override or outlaw national and individual sovereignty in favor of world government. A new monetary system, a renewal of the multilateral system – all of this is designed to sell the public on the idea that the UN (or some new international body) is needed to take humanity safely into the future. In truth, we are likely to see major steps towards the creation of a one-world government at the Summit for the Future. (Derrick Broze, “UN 2.0 Coming This Fall – Setting The Stage For Global Government,” Activist Post, 5/1/24)

A great rush to bring into being the Great Reset is moving toward the fall of 2024. Some prophecy watchers from the pre-Trib camp have offered that the fall of this year might be a time particularly likely for God’s Great Reset to take place.

Certainly, with all things shaping for the Tribulation seeming to be front and center, both resets might coincide at any moment.

You want to be caught up into God’s Great Reset when Christ calls all believers to Himself–not caught in the satanically spawned reset on planet Earth that will bring on the worst time of human history.

Here is how to go to Jesus when He calls in the Rapture.

“That if you will confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and will believe in your heart that God has raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart man believes unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation” (Romans 10:9-10).

Is There Any Hope for America?

During the past week, the Republican Party nominated Donald Trump as its candidate for the office of President of the United States. Many believe his reelection will save America from its current path to destruction.

Of course, I would prefer to see him return to the White House versus the current occupant. However, I believe God’s judgment looms in the relatively near future regardless of who wins the upcoming election or which party controls Congress and the Senate.

Though optimism abounds among many, we must reckon with the fact that the globalists and deep state within the U.S. will do everything they can to keep Trump out of power. They fear that as president, he will again interfere with their Luciferian agenda of bringing a New World Order to fruition.

Yes, the Lord is more than able to thwart the plans of those seeking to destroy the U.S. On the other hand, it appears much more likely that He will allow them to prevail for a brief time so He might totally destroy Satan’s earthly realm and inaugurate a reign of righteousness over the nations.

A Likely Scenario

I believe the most likely scenario for the coming months, or perhaps years, is the Rapture followed by a rapid degrading of America’s status, if not its total elimination as a nation. I say this because the start of the Tribulation looms ever so close.

The Bible tells us that great wars will occur during the coming Day of the Lord. The conflicts illuded to in Revelation 6:1-8 will result in many more deaths than occurred during the last century with the two world wars and the deadly rise of Communism, which led to a staggering total that exceeded one hundred million.

The world teeters on the edge of disastrous wars on many fronts, which at any moment could erupt into a devastating world war. I believe the presence of the Holy Spirit within us as New Testament saints currently restrains the globalists’ plans to ignite the most deadly wars of history.

It’s amazing that NATO’s provocation of Russia in Ukraine has not yet resulted in a response involving nuclear weapons. Those in Putin’s administration have repeatedly warned the U.S. and its allies of such a response, but President Biden continues to cross the red lines that the Russian president has set for such a disastrous response. How much longer can this keep happening without sparking a deadly conflict?

The Middle East also rests on the brink of a great war that could involve many nations. It appears that a major conflict between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon is unavoidable, which might bring Iran and many other nations into the war.

China’s impending invasion of Taiwan is another flashpoint that could explode into a worldwide conflict involving the U.S.

The rider with a “great sword” is just one of the four riders of the apocalypse whose appearance seem long overdue given all that’s happening at this time.

The Nearness of God’s Judgment

If there is a path to making America great again, it must result in people renouncing abortion, the entire LGBQT+ agenda, and the government’s allowance, if not direct support, of sex trafficking. Any awakening that averts God’s judgment on the U.S. must cause widespread disdain for these things as well as for the lawlessness, deception, and violence that has become so commonplace on our shores.

For three decades, I have believed that Habakkuk’s description of ancient Judah (1:2-4) fits perfectly with modern-day America. How did the Lord respond to the prophet’s complaint? He told him that judgment was already on its way to the Land (1:5-11). Would He respond in the same way today? I think so.

I continually pray for people to come to saving faith in Jesus. I would love to see a great awakening that would take America off its current path to ruin and destruction. However, similar to Habakkuk’s day, God’s wrath is likely on its way to the U.S. as well as to the rest of the world.

Ancient Judah failed to heed the warnings of the likes of Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Habakkuk. Today, most people in the U.S. ignore the warnings that resound from many. Sadly, many saints hear “all is well” messages from pastors who deny the Rapture and push the Lord’s return to a far distant time when He comes to inaugurate the eternal state. Far too many put their hope in political solutions that will only lead to further despair.

For the reasons cited above and many more, I’m not optimistic about the future of America. I believe God’s patience will soon end, we will meet Jesus in the air, and the entire earth will feel the full brunt of His wrath. We are far beyond the place where the results of an election will change the downward course.

At times, I feel the pull toward the hope that voters in the upcoming U.S. election will send a resounding message to those now seeking to destroy the nation.

However, the Bible brings me back to the realization that we live in the last days and that the only reliable expectation of the future consists of Jesus’ imminent appearing to take us home to glory.

Maranatha!
