You Can’t Ask Too Much of My God :: By Dennis Huebshman

Matthew 7: 7-11; “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; and the one who seeks finds; and to the one who knocks, it will be opened. Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father, who is in Heaven, give good things to those who ask Him!” (ESV – all emphasis mine)

For some, the above verses could possibly cause them to turn away from God’s word. The statement has been made that a person asked something from the Father, and because it didn’t appear or wasn’t given to them, this must be a lie. Numbers 23:19, Hebrews 6:18, and Titus 1:2 are very specific in telling us God cannot lie. The real issue becomes what was asked for and what was the motive behind the request.

John 14:12-14; “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in Me will also do the works that I do, and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. Whatever you ask in My name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it.”

This still leaves some skeptics with the idea that they should be able to ask for absolutely anything to be given to them, and the Savior must comply. Also, by mentioning “works,” there are those who interpret this as we must do works to be saved.

A verse that helps with this is 1 John 5:14; “And this is the confidence that we have toward Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.” Going out and buying a lottery ticket and then “asking” the Father to make it the big winner would not be in His will. To ask for anything that is selfish in motive or that would be harmful to others would not be granted either.

Just before giving His disciples a format of praying, Jesus told them in Matthew 6:6-8, “But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door, and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask Him.”

In what has been called the “Lord’s Prayer,” Jesus gives the disciples a simple formula for talking to the Father. First, we acknowledge that He is the only true God, and we respect that His will be done over ours. Then, we ask for our daily needs and to forgive those who have sinned against us. He also instructs us to ask for protection from evil forces. Nowhere does He say, Give us all our “greeds.”

In the Lord’s true prayer of the Son to the Father in John 17, Jesus praises the Father for allowing Him to glorify the Father by completing the work that He was sent to do. He asks for blessings on those who were with Him during His time here on earth, and in verse 20, Jesus even prays for all who would believe in Him from that time on. That includes all true believers today who have received and accepted Him as their Savior.

With three simple words in John 19:30, “It Is Finished!” He bought us the greatest gift we could ever have. No so-called earthly treasure could begin to compare with eternal life in Heaven. It’s not because of works, as given in Ephesians 2:8-9, and there are no other sacrifices anyone can make to earn their Heavenly Home (Hebrews 10:4).

We have a Heavenly Father that is all about love, and His love for us is undeniable. In 1 John 4:16, we read, “So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.”

We have a “forgiving” God, even though we are all sinners, as given in Romans 3:23. According to Romans 6:23, we all should be sentenced to death for our sinful ways, but the free gift of eternal life is given by the Father to anyone who believes in Christ Jesus, our Lord. For anyone who believes they are pure and holy, Romans 3:10 tells us that “None is righteous; no not one.”

The Bishops released a song in 1996 that Mark Bishop wrote titled “You Can’t Ask Too Much of My God.” It encourages us to take our requests to the Father, as He loves to hear from His children.

“When David gathered a handful of stones, and where the soldiers had fallen, he waited alone. With a prayer and a little rock, the giant fell right on the spot. Well, that’s what David prayed for, and that’s what David got. Oh, You Can’t Ask Too Much of My God.

There was a woman drawing water from a well. She had so many regrets, so often she failed. But Jesus knew where she had been; still, He forgave her of her sins. And in her life began to flow, living water for the soul. No, You Can’t Ask Too Much of My God.

So when you’re broken, and you can’t find peace of mind that seems to leave you behind, have you spoken to the God of Abraham, the Great I Am? He’s greater than the problem you’ve got. No, You Can’t Ask Too Much of My God.

Upon the three Hebrew children, God smiled. And when Sarah was 90, God gave her a child. We believe just as then, He’s here to move that way again. He’s got a miracle to do; He only needs to hear from you. No, You Can’t Ask Too Much of My God. No, You Can’t Ask Too Much of My God.”

Several great examples of the Father supplying what was needed in trying times are in this song. One key is we must have faith and trust that our God will provide as He sees fit, and many times in ways we never quite expected.

Right now is not the time to turn away from our Savior and Heavenly Father. The world is getting more evil by the day, and we’re seeing attitudes against Christians as never before in our lifetime.

To get closer to our Lord, we should be reading from His word daily. Even if only a couple of chapters a day, we are “communicating” with the Creator of our whole universe, and He is actually pleased when we do so.

No matter what we have done in our past, if we follow Romans 10:9-13 and call on Jesus to save us, He will do so. All our past sins will be totally forgiven, as stated in Psalm 103:11-12. And even then, when – not if – we sin, He stands ready to forgive us if we ask, as given in 1 John 1:8-10. No man-made deity could ever compare to our true Lord God Jehovah.

All the events happening in this world today were prophesied in our Father’s Holy Word to us. It is becoming more and more obvious that this world is near the end of this era, and all true believers will be taken up to meet the Savior in the air to be kept from the coming wrath.

This does not mean we won’t see things that are very disturbing, and it doesn’t mean we won’t be subject to persecution. However, before the actual man of lawlessness can appear, we have to be gone, as given in 2 Thessalonians 2. We won’t be here for the worst 7-year period of time this world has ever experienced.

If you haven’t done so, call out to the Father today, and ask to receive and accept the gift His Son gave for us. Jesus shed His precious blood for all who would ask Him to forgive them and to become a part of His precious flock. It will change your eternal destiny from total darkness and agony to an eternity of a pure and loving light with Heaven as your eternal Home.

Ask, and forgiveness will be given to you; seek Jesus, and you will find Him; knock, and the Savior will open the door for you. That’s it; no works, no special secret rituals, and nothing you can personally buy.

Hope to see you at Home!

To Get Ahold of God’s Heart :: By Keith Watts

In this message, I will take a look at two men in the Bible that got ahold of God’s heart. Moses and Samuel. God is longing for a man of prayer or a woman of prayer to move his heart. Those in the Bible and even today have and will see amazing things in their lifetime if their prayer life is as close to the Lord as these two men’s prayer lives were. We serve the same God today as Moses and Samuel did in their day. Our God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Do you believe this? Do you believe in your heart that in your prayers, you will be able to move the heart of God in a mighty way? God Almighty is longing for a man to really move his heart. I pray that this message will help you in your prayer life.

Jeremiah 15:1 “Then said the LORD unto me, Though Moses and Samuel stood before me, yet my mind could not be toward this people: cast them out of my sight, and let them go forth.”

What the Lord is telling Jeremiah is that if Moses and Samuel were back on the earth and praying for Jerusalem that he would not hear their cry for the southern kingdom and for the city of Jerusalem. That judgment was going to come down on Judah no matter who prayed for them. There will come a time of judgment on nations, cities, and individuals, and interceding for them will go unheard on God’s hears. This verse tells me that Moses and Samuel had such an amazing prayer life with their Lord. My heart’s desire is to have that kind of prayer life with my Lord.

How can we move the heart of God when we don’t even give him our whole heart? Do you have a desire in your heart to even move his heart to answer a really big prayer? Most of the time, at the end of our prayers, we will add, “Lord, let your will be done.” He would want us to move his heart to answer this prayer in a mighty way, but we must have faith that our prayer will move his heart.

I had preachers pray over my wife, Jenni, and say, “In the mighty name of Jesus, I declare her healed.” Jesus did not heal my wife; he took her home to be with him in Heaven. The Bible does not say that all you have to do is say his name and it will be done. But there are men in the Bible that moved the heart of God. Look at what happened in the lives of Moses and Samuel. Their prayers moved the heart of their Heavenly Father all the time.

I have a question. If Moses and Samuel stood before the Lord on behalf of America, would he hear their cry? I believe the answer to that question is no because America’s sins have reached the nostrils of God. But I do believe we can intercede on behalf of millions of lost Americans to receive Jesus Christ as their Savior before it is too late.

Why did God say that to Jeremiah about Moses and Samuel? Let’s get into the message.

Psalms 99:6 “Moses and Aaron among his priests, and Samuel among them that call upon his name; they called upon the LORD, and he answered them.”

These men called upon the Lord, and he answered them. We can have this kind of prayer life with our Lord also. He desires to have this close of a relationship with all of us. Getting this close to our Lord through prayer takes a lot of work on our part. He is always there with us. How many words do we say to the Lord from our hearts to his heart in a day?

Looking at Moses’s prayer life

Moses spent forty days and nights up on Mount Sinai with the Lord. This is the kind of relationship he had with the God of the Universe. What an amazing relationship to have! We may not be able to ask the Lord if we can see his face, but we can have this close of a relationship with the Creator of all things. Moses did ask the Lord if he could see his face, and the Lord said if he would see his face, he would die. The Lord covered him and allowed him to see the back side of him. What a close relationship Moses had with the Lord! This is the kind of relationship we will have in Heaven with Jesus, but we do not have to wait to get to heaven to have this kind of relationship with him. The Lord’s desire is to have this close of a relationship with all of us while we are here on this earth. How close is your relationship with Jesus?

Exodus 32:11 “And Moses besought the LORD his God, and said, LORD, why doth thy wrath wax hot against thy people, which thou hast brought forth out of the land of Egypt with great power, and with a mighty hand?”

Exodus 32:12 “Wherefore should the Egyptians speak, and say, For mischief did he bring them out, to slay them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth? Turn from thy fierce wrath, and repent of this evil against thy people.”

Exodus 32:13 “Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, thy servants, to whom thou swarest by thine own self, and saidst unto them, I will multiply your seed as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have spoken of will I give unto your seed, and they shall inherit it for ever.”

Exodus 32:14 “And the LORD repented of the evil which he thought to do unto his people.”

In verse 11, it says, “Moses besought the Lord.” To beseech means to ask in a pleading way. Our Pastor said in a message the other day, “When you pray, do you give the Lord a way out in the prayer?” So many times in our prayer life, that is what we do when we say to the Lord, ‘Please heal John Doe, but if you don’t heal him, let your will be done.’ Moses was pleading with the Lord on behalf of the children of Israel. When Moses prayed to the Lord, he was seeking the answer from the Lord to save their lives. The Lord heard his prayer; Moses moved the heart of God. How many times do we go to prayer with the Lord yet not even believing that the Lord will hear us?

In verse 12, it is amazing what Moses said to the Lord, “And repent of this evil against thy people.” Moses is not saying you have sinned and to turn away from it. God cannot sin. Moses is pleading with the Lord to turn away his wrath from the people. This verse in Psalms comes to my mind:

Psalms 106:23 “Therefore he said that he would destroy them, had not Moses his chosen stood before him in the breach, to turn away his wrath, lest he should destroy them.”

Moses was determined to move the heart of God. Moses stood in the breach for the sake of the children of Israel. If Moses had not done this, God would have destroyed them that day. I think it is time to stand in the breach for the lost souls all over the world to turn away the Lord’s wrath from them. It is their choice to receive Jesus Christ or reject him.

In verse 13, Moses quoted Scripture to the Lord. When you pray, do you quote Scripture to the Lord? Maybe this is why you cannot move the heart of God. ‘Remember the covenant you have with Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, thy servants.’ This touched the heart of the Lord. Moses quoted the Scriptures while he prayed to the Lord. When you pray, start quoting Scriptures to the Lord. While you are praying, you may ask the Holy Spirit to bring into your mind the verse in the Bible to quote.

In verse 14, The Lord repented of the evil he was going to do unto his people. Wow! This is the result of a man on this earth moving the heart of God Almighty through prayer! I just ask myself this question: Was there another man on the face of the earth that could have stood in the breach between God and Israel? I believe the answer to that question is a big no. There was not a man on the face of the earth at the time of Moses that was this close to the Lord as Moses was. I believe that because of the closeness of their relationship with each other, Moses could really move the heart of God like no other man at his time.

Let’s take a look at Samuel.

1 Samuel 7:8 “And the children of Israel said to Samuel, Cease not to cry unto the LORD our God for us, that he will save us out of the hand of the Philistines.”

1 Samuel 7:9 “And Samuel took a sucking lamb, and offered it for a burnt offering wholly unto the LORD: and Samuel cried unto the LORD for Israel; and the LORD heard him.”

1 Samuel 7:10 “And as Samuel was offering up the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to battle against Israel: but the LORD thundered with a great thunder on that day upon the Philistines, and discomfited them; and they were smitten before Israel.”

In verse 8, what did the children of Israel say to Samuel? “Cease not to cry unto the Lord our God for us.” Is this the cry of every lost person around the world? ‘Please don’t stop praying for us.’ I believe one of the reasons why Samuel was mentioned by God to Jeremiah along with Moses was that he never quit praying for the people. It is not time to quit praying for those you have been praying for, and it is not time to forget to pray for them, either. I’m reminded of this verse in James:

James 5:16 “Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.”

What does this verse mean about prayer? It means work, work, work, and more work. That is why so few put this verse into practice in their life. I ask myself this question: how many Christians on the face of the earth live by this verse and practice it in their everyday living? When you really get down to it, that is why so many Christians’ prayer life is so weak. We forget to pray as often and as fervently (with passionate intensity; heartfelt) as we should. We are too busy in this life or in working for the Lord in the ministry. Let us slow down and look at our prayer life.

In verse 9, Samuel took a lamb and offered the lamb unto the Lord. Jesus, the Lamb of God, has already been offered to the Lord. The price has been paid in full. Samuel cried unto the Lord for Israel, and the Lord heard him. This verse says so much. We need to live as he has risen, but we also need to pray to our God the Father like he has risen because the tomb is empty. So the reason why we are living a defeated life is because that is how we are praying to the one that has already given us victory. When Samuel cried for the people, it was a tremendous cry to the Lord on behalf of the people. He really cried long and hard on behalf of the people. Have you ever cried this hard for someone in your prayers? I love this next statement in verse 9, “and the Lord heard him.” Does he hear your prayers?

In verse 10, we see the results of the prayer of Samuel getting ahold of the heart of God: “and they were smitten before Israel.” God answered the prayer of Samuel.

Moses and Samuel really got ahold of God’s heart. I believe that is why God mentions to Jeremiah (in Jeremiah 15:1) the name of two men in the Bible that got ahold of his heart when they prayed to him.

In the next article, I will finish this message by looking at two more men in the Bible. The title of the next message is, To Move the Heart of God. The names of the two men are Hezekiah and Daniel. I will give my closing thought in the next article on both of the messages. I pray that this has helped you in your prayer life.
