Romans 16: It Takes a Team :: By Sean Gooding

Novara - The carved relif of Conversion of St. Paul in the church Chiesa di San MarcoThere are no Lone Rangers in the Bible. Adam needed Eve, Moses needed Aaron, David needed Jonathan, Elijah had Elisha, and even in the New Testament, Jesus had a beloved disciple named John. On and on we can go. But as we explore the life of the Apostle Paul and his ministry, it is easy to forget that he did not do the work alone. He had an array of faithful men and women that served alongside him in the field. In this chapter, as in many other of his books, Paul pays homage to them and mentions them. Many of the names we are familiar with, and we hear them over and over as we explore the life of the Apostle Paul. We will explore a few of these here.

Verse 3-4: Priscilla and Aquila, those who served alongside him, his fellow tentmakers. And in verse 4, we see that they too had put their lives in danger for the Gospel. Paul was not the only one living in danger and for fear of life. These folks did as well.

We also see in verse 5 that there was a church in their home. Most of us are not accustomed to this; we attend church service in a building, sometimes an elaborate building, house or ministry. Now, in some cases, these buildings are used for schools and many other functions during the week. But there are a host of church buildings that go unused except for a few hours each week. Maybe, just maybe, there could have been a better use of the monies invested.

Other churches once were larger but now occupy a small percentage of a once well-used building. The members hold on to the building when the monies could be used in missions, in maybe a smaller facility, and more help to your Pastor. I have heard of a situation where 2 churches simply swapped buildings as one was getting bigger and another not growing as much. We need to be careful that the building does not become an idol.

In verse 7, we meet Andronicus and Junia who had been imprisoned with Paul. So not just Silas, but others shared a cell with Paul. This is why we need to read the scriptures and expand our understanding of all that happened and all that these new churches faced in the Roman kingdom.

Then we come to verse 13, and we hear of Rufus. Often, I had read this and not done the connecting of the dots. In Mark 15:21, we have a situation where Jesus stumbles as He is carrying the cross, and they ask Simon of Cyrene to carry it. We are told that he is the father of Alexander and Rufus. Well, many Biblical historians have come to the conclusion that the Rufus we see in Romans 16 is this same Rufus. There we are told that his mother is a mother to Paul as well. Many saved men, many saved people are cut off from their blood families when they are saved, and they need spiritual mothers and fathers to help them. It would appear that Paul had one of those in his life.

Verse 17-18: In contrast to those that help those that hurt alongside contribute personally and financially are those that cause division. God hates discord amongst His people. He hates those that come in and search out our peace and try to steal it. He hates those that are the broken cog in a well-oiled machine. Watch for doctrinal division; we weary of it and get in the way ASAP. Watch for those that bring in division by attitude, a lack of love, a lack of forgiveness, backbiters and complainers; quiet their voices ASAP, or they will slowly break you and stop the wonderful fellowship and progress in the Gospel. It is better to be small, filled with God’s peace, and to be actually contributing to the Kingdom than to be big, divided and useless.

Verse 21-24: Even there on the road, Paul had a large group. In particular, we meet Tertius who wrote the book of Romans. Paul, as he aged, began to lose his eyesight. We see that in his earlier books he wrote them himself, and then as he aged, the books were written in uppercase. Eventually, he would simply dictate them, and then sign them at the end. Most likely, verses 25-27 were written by Paul as a sign that he, in fact, was the one telling Tertius what to write.

Even the Lone Ranger had Tonto; he was not alone. Paul did not do the work alone. Our missionaries that go abroad do not do the work alone. There is an army of people making sure the monies get to where they need to be. Our association of churches, the American Baptist Association, has a man who does logistics. He books plane flights, hotels, and gets people to where they need to go. We have a treasurer that makes sure that cheques get deposited and the special funds get raised so that the missionaries get paid. On and on we can go; it takes a team.

Are you actively involved in spreading the Gospel? Have you found a way to invest yourself in the Kingdom and the work? Get in, get involved, and you know what you can do from your home; get all the prayer cards from the missionaries that visit your church and begin to pray for them daily. Make time, keep the appointment, and get involved.

Fusion of AI with the American war machine is the most dangerous turn in human history
The Pentagon calls America’s AI-first military its new “manifest destiny.” Mike Adams calls it a one-way ticket to a dystopia from which we may never escape. The “AI-first” military is characterised by the integration of autonomous drones and machine learning into combat. But, Adams argues, government-led AI initiatives are actually efforts to centralise control over its own citizens.

Ukraine’s former commander-in-chief Zaluzhny says Ukraine will never join NATO
I know NATO very well. For about twelve years I have personally worked on mastering NATO standards, and every year I have heard the same story that we will soon join. Unfortunately, we will never do that, he said at a meeting with ambassadors in Kyiv, according to Yevropeiska Pravda. Zaluzhnyi believes that NATO “follows doctrines that originate from World War II,” and that membership is therefore unreasonable given how quickly Ukrainian defence is developing.

Metasurface Breakthrough Makes Blistering Laser Light Speeds a Reality
The speed of laser light is due for a major upgrade after an international collaboration of scientists has developed a breakthrough nanomaterial. The new metasurface can steer and shape light beams at unprecedented speeds of just 74 quadrillionths of a second. Scientists at UC Berkeley and Tel Aviv University revealed their new optical surface, developed in a Caltech lab, in a recent paper published in Nature Nanotechnology.

France records its hottest July on record as Austria hits all-time high in Vienna
July was the warmest month ever recorded in France since records began in 1900, according to Météo-France. This is 3.8 degrees above the average temperature for the month, breaking previous records from the heat waves in August 2003 and July 2006. July was also the third driest month on record, according to the weather institute. Precipitation was almost 70 percent below average, which has led to parched soil and a very high fire risk.

New Russian Tech Aimed At Ukraine
Russia is introducing new technology into the Ukraine war. Will it help the Russians win in the conflict? Even more tantalizing, both were developed by private sector companies in Russia! Russia has launched two new products that promise a lot. But can they deliver? The first, and perhaps the most important, is a new satellite communications system called Rassvet 3 (”Dawn”). It is Russia’s answer to Starlink, Elon Musk’s fabulous network of between 10,870 to 10,890 satellites.

Oil Tumbles On Iran Deal Buzz As Rubio Still Insists ‘Denuclearization’ Is The ‘Ultimate’ Goal
Rubio: The “ultimate deal” is the denuclearization of Iran, while Omani talks focus on reopening Hormuz. Stalemate persists: Iran refuses nuclear negotiations until the conflict ends, leaving both sides far apart.

Bab el-Mandeb Strait: Why the Red Sea passage is referred to as ‘Hormuz 2.0’
However, another waterway has also come into focus following recent tensions between the Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen and Saudi Arabia. That waterway is the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which connects the Gulf of Aden, south of the Arabian Peninsula, with the Red Sea. Like the Strait of Hormuz, the Bab el-Mandeb is one of the world’s busiest maritime chokepoints, carrying about 4.8 million barrels of oil per day, significant volumes of Qatari liquefied natural gas, and roughly 10–12% of global shipping traffic, or about 19,000 vessels each year.

Pentagon expands interceptor production after heavy demand from Israel, Ukraine
The Pentagon has launched a major effort to expand production of Patriot and THAAD interceptor missiles as the United States, Israel and other allies work to replenish air defense stockpiles depleted by years of conflict. The move comes after unprecedented demand for interceptor missiles driven by wars in the Middle East and Ukraine, highlighting the growing challenge of sustaining modern air defense systems. Israel has become one of the clearest examples of that challenge.

Dramatic change in Gaza strike policy
Israel’s defense establishment has updated its procedures for approving strikes in the Gaza Strip in recent days, following a decision made by the political leadership. Under the new policy, the authority to approve targeted killings has been significantly restricted. Such operations may now only be carried out with the personal approval of IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir.

Israel, Lebanon, US weigh who will verify Hezbollah disarmament after negotiations in Rome
The discussions concern which country, or countries, will be responsible for verifying that areas entered by the Lebanese Armed Forces under the pilot phase of Hezbollah’s disarmament are free of both Hezbollah operatives and the group’s weapons, three sources familiar with the talks have told The Jerusalem Post.

US Supreme Court Allows For Enforcement of $656 Million Lawsuit Against PA and PLO
The U.S. Supreme Court has declined to halt enforcement of a $656 million judgment against the Palestinian Authority (PA) and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), marking a significant legal victory for American victims of Palestinian terrorism and their families.

Literal, Eternal, And Unconditional: Bible Prophecy Begins And Ends With Israel
Imagine you open to the middle of John Grisham’s latest best-seller. Immediately you face unfamiliar names and locations. To make sense of the story, you flip to the end. But the ending seems more confusing than the middle. You slam the book shut in disgust. Grisham has really lost his touch, you conclude. But it illustrates why so many people have trouble with Bible prophecy. To understand prophecy, we should not start in the middle of the Book—with Ezekiel and Daniel—or at the end—with Revelation. No, we should begin at the beginning—with Genesis.

HEGSETH: U.S. Military Readiness At Highest Level Since World War II Despite Iran Strike Pause
U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said the American military remains at an unprecedented level of readiness despite President Donald Trump’s decision to postpone planned strikes against Iran. “The Department of Defense was prepared and ready, and remains ready, at levels not seen since World War II,” Hegseth said. “We are ready and prepared right now as well.”

Iran strikes U.S. base in Kuwait despite Trump’s diplomatic pause, as regional attacks multiply
Iran launched a drone attack against a US military base in Kuwait in the early hours of Tuesday, according to Arab media reports, in what could mark a shift in Tehran’s strategy after several days of comparative restraint. Until now, Iran had largely limited its retaliation to strikes following direct American attacks on Iranian territory. Tuesday’s reported strike came instead just days after President Trump halted a planned large-scale US offensive against Iran to give diplomacy a final opportunity.

As Congress scatters home for the August recess, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) – a “foreign terrorist organization” and unindicted co-conspirator in the Holy Land Foundation terror-financing trial – has unleashed its 2026 August Congressional Recess Toolkit.

Trump claims Israel ‘very happy’ about Hamas disarmament deal, as Netanyahu indicates otherwise.
A statement from Netanyahu’s office said Israel demanded “full disarmament of Hamas, including removal of the weaponry from Gaza and complete demilitarization of the Strip as a condition for any process” of withdrawal. The statement added that the agreement does not include “a sufficient response to those demands.”

A Dangerous Deal: Trump’s Board of Peace and Hamas.
It’s disturbing that the new deal asserts that “no weapons shall be transferred or handed to Israel or non-Palestinian parties.” Also, the new roadmap’s conditioning of disarmament on Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip. Why should a terrorist organization that carried out the Oct 7, 2023 massacre in Israel be allowed to dictate the conditions of its own disarmament?

U.S. Virtually Out of Long-range Missiles. Army General: U.S. Can No Longer Defend Israel.
Army General Grynkewich, head of U.S. European Command, said he can no longer defend Israel from missile attacks without another Navy destroyer. Without that nearly $3 billion ship, he must choose between defending America, which he swore an oath to do, and defending Israel, which he did not swear an oath to do.
