Cuffing the Israelis
It’s a puzzle.
Sort of.
The pattern of U.S. Presidents, from Ike on to Trump, is to handcuff Israel just as the Jewish state is on the verge of generational peace via getting rid of a rogue regime.
During the first half of 1967, President Johnson urged the Israelis not act first against their neighbors. Egypt alone had bragged that they would wipe the Jews off the map. LBJ told Israel he would have their back.
Fortunately, Levi Eshkol knew LBJ was lying. Israel pre-empted and destroyed half of Egypt’s air force in the first 30 minutes. That led to an iconic victory, one in which Israel took back her ancestral land, including the Temple Mount and east Jerusalem.
Some presidents are worse than others, like Jimmy Carter, Clinton and Obama. Two of them were ostensibly Southern Baptist. Clinton always bragged that his pastor, W.O. Vaught, told him once, “Never abandon Israel.”
He abandoned Israel many times.
Just this week, Donald Trump has stopped Israel from finishing-off Hezbollah, with yet another ceasefire. It’s his pattern. Iran is still standing because of Trump.
Lebanon’s president, Joseph Aoun, is hedging his bets, refusing to phone Benjamin Netanyahu, even though Trump assures the world the two are very close. No, they’re not. Aoun is smart enough to remember Trump’s urging the Iranian population to rise up, because “help is on the way.” It’s the LBJ “strategy.” Lebanon wants free of Hezbollah and would move to do so, but not with shaky Western assurances. Remember, these guys were boys when the U.S. reneged on promises.
George H.W. Bush kept loans back from Israel until Shamir came to the negotiating table with the devilish PLO. Why?
Yasser Arafat was hiding in a cave in Tunisia when Bush’s handlers cleaned him up and made him a “statesman.” The PLO has been murdering people ever since, including Americans.
Remember too, even the great Ronald Reagan blinked. When Hezbollah murdered 241 Marines in Beirut in 1983, Reagan pulled us out! Wow, that’ll show’em! The Arabs learn very well from this weakness.
This week, Italy’s Meloni abandoned Israel. The question is why all these westerners pull defeat from the jaws of victory. It’s maddening. Dismaying. Infuriating.
Why?
We’ll never know the full truth, but I suspect Trump is concerned about upsetting the global economy. If Iran falls (just as Iraq did), who will fill the vacuum? Probably Russia. We can’t tolerate that. It would be a years-long American project to try and get Iran up to strength. We know how that goes.
In a slightly different arena, I suspect many/most of our politicians are on the take. We now know the Republicans are as bad as the Democrats. The same bird. I believe most of our politicians are being paid by our enemies. Thus, it’s an easy sellout for them when it comes to the Jewish state.
Donald Trump is nowhere near the same universe as Clinton or Carter, vis a vis Israel. I think he has affection for Jews, which is stunning for a U.S. President. Many have been openly hostile. If the U.S. had dealt properly with the Muslim Brotherhood 70 years ago, we wouldn’t have the problems we have today.
We do know from Scripture that Israel will be fine. Sadly, the rest of us…not so much. Read Joel 3:2.
We put handcuffs on the Israelis, not out of outright stupidity, but due to moral weakness. I’ve known for a generation that America’s Congress is made up of atheists, mainline, and Catholics. None of those groups supports Israel. Our “elected” representatives will remain a permanent stain on American history.
At least God has allowed us to live in this time, to see these things unfold.
