Most Jewish Thing: Believing in Jesus :: By Geri Ungurean

There is a rabbi from Israel who believes that he was called by God to bring Jews back to right Jewish thought and teaching. Who are these “wayward” Jews?

To Rabbi Singer, they are Jews like me who have received the One who was promised to us. The rabbi believes that somehow we were brainwashed and snatched away from the “truth” of the Old Testament.

I was approached years ago by an Israeli writer. She said that Rabbi Singer desired to speak with me. She wanted to set up the meeting. I graciously declined after reading about the work of the rabbi.

I wonder if Rabbi Singer has read Isaiah 53 from the Old Testament?

The Sin-Bearing Messiah

Isaiah 53 (YES – from the OLD Testament)

“Who has believed our report?
And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
For He shall grow up before Him as a tender plant,
And as a root out of dry ground.
He has no form or comeliness;
And when we see Him,
There is no beauty that we should desire Him.
He is despised and rejected by men,
A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.
And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him;
He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.

“Surely He has borne our griefs
And carried our sorrows;
Yet we esteemed Him stricken,
Smitten by God, and afflicted.
But He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
And by His stripes we are healed.
All we like sheep have gone astray;
We have turned, every one, to his own way;
And the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all.

“He was oppressed and He was afflicted,
Yet He opened not His mouth;
He was led as a lamb to the slaughter,
And as a sheep before its shearers is silent,
So He opened not His mouth.
He was taken from prison and from judgment,
And who will declare His generation?
For He was cut off from the land of the living;
For the transgressions of My people He was stricken.
And they made His grave with the wicked—
But with the rich at His death,
Because He had done no violence,
Nor was any deceit in His mouth.

“Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him;
He has put Him to grief.
When You make His soul an offering for sin,
He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days,
And the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand.
He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied.
By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many,
For He shall bear their iniquities.
Therefore I will divide Him a portion with the great,
And He shall divide the spoil with the strong,
Because He poured out His soul unto death,
And He was numbered with the transgressors,
And He bore the sin of many,
And made intercession for the transgressors.”

A Testimony from a Jewish Man – One for Israel <click

A Jewish person reading this article might say:

“But followers of Jesus have persecuted and killed us for many centuries!” The confusion behind the suspicious attitude which most Jews have is not without good reason.

But what my people do not understand is that many of the same people who persecuted and killed them likewise persecuted and killed the true followers of Jesus Christ. I am speaking here of the “Catholic Church” which I have rightly called a Cult in many of my articles. Jewish people must understand that the Vatican has NOTHING to do with the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

But how about Martin Luther and John Calvin and their anti-Semitism?

As a Messianic Jew, I was shocked and saddened to learn that these “fathers” of the Great Reformation held anti-Semitic views. For years, I avoided quotes from these men; and I must admit that I held more than just a bit of anger towards them.

It was only when the Lord revealed to me that as long as people are in this body of flesh, we will still sin. God used these men to show the world that the doctrines of Catholicism were not from the Bible. Jesus brought the Covenant of Grace (saved by Grace through Faith). The Catholic church teaches a “Works-based” salvation.

But as a Jew, I will still avoid quoting from Luther and Calvin. It still stings when I read the words from these men.

But actually God did reveal His Messiah in the Old Testament as clearly shown in Isaiah 53. There is still a blindness in part to the eyes of the Jewish people. And because of this partial blindness, the most beautiful thing happened to the world.

The Gentiles, who were for centuries kept out of the Kingdom of God, were miraculously brought into God’s Kingdom through Grace! But please see the warnings given to the Gentiles to not be “haughty” and boast – God said it best with this warning from Romans 11:

“For if the first fruit is holy, the lump is also holy; and if the root is holy, so are the branches. And if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive tree, were grafted in among them, and with them became a partaker of the root and fatness of the olive tree, do not boast against the branches. But if you do boast, remember that you do not support the root, but the root supports you” (emphasis mine).

Romans 11:11-31

Israel’s Rejection Not Final (I will bold certain words and phrases for the sake of understanding)

“I say then, have they stumbled that they should fall? Certainly not! But through their fall, to provoke them to jealousy, salvation has come to the Gentiles. Now if their fall is riches for the world, and their failure riches for the Gentiles, how much more their fullness!

“For I speak to you Gentiles; inasmuch as I am an apostle to the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry, if by any means I may provoke to jealousy those who are my flesh and save some of them. For if their being cast away is the reconciling of the world, what will their acceptance be but life from the dead?

“For if the first fruit is holy, the lump is also holy; and if the root is holy, so are the branches.  And if some of the branches were broken off, and you, being a wild olive tree, were grafted in among them, and with them became a partaker of the root and fatness of the olive tree, do not boast against the branches. But if you do boast, remember that you do not support the root, but the root supports you.

“You will say then, ‘Branches were broken off that I might be grafted in.’ Well said. Because of unbelief they were broken off, and you stand by faith. Do not be haughty, but fear. For if God did not spare the natural branches, He may not spare you either. Therefore consider the goodness and severity of God: on those who fell, severity; but toward you, goodness, if you continue in His goodness. Otherwise you also will be cut off. And they also, if they do not continue in unbelief, will be grafted in, for God is able to graft them in againFor if you were cut out of the olive tree which is wild by nature, and were grafted contrary to nature into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these, who are the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree?

“For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own opinion, that blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written:

‘The Deliverer will come out of Zion,
And He will turn away ungodliness from Jacob;

For this is My covenant with them,
When I take away their sins.’

Concerning the gospel they are enemies for your sake, but concerning the election they are beloved for the sake of the fathers. For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. For as you were once disobedient to God, yet have now obtained mercy through their disobedience,  even so these also have now been disobedient, that through the mercy shown you they also may obtain mercy.”

Conclusion

I am praying that many Jewish people will read this article in hopes that they might read the New Testament and discover that Jesus (Yeshua) was and IS their long-awaited Messiah. I pray that they will discover the Jewishness of Jesus and of His Apostles!

The Ten Commandments given to Moses were to show God’s Chosen His standards and Holiness. The Jewish people in the Old Testament were never able to keep all of God’s commandments. How many times did they take unto themselves gods from other countries? And when Moses was receiving the Ten Commandments, the Israelites were fashioning and worshiping a golden calf!

Think about King David. Was there even one Commandment that David was able to keep? No, but God still called David “a man after His own heart.” Why? Because of his repentance and how he mourned over sinning against God.

When Yeshua (Jesus) came to earth, He brought the Commandments to a new level. He told his followers that if they even lusted after a woman, it was the same as adultery. He told them that being angry at another person was just like killing them.

Yeshua was showing the people that there was no way to keep every Commandment. But repentance (changing one’s mind about sin) and trusting the death and Resurrection of Yeshua as payment in full for one’s sins – THIS is what reconciles a person to God the Father. The letter of the Law killed, but the Covenant of Grace brought by Yeshua gives Life everlasting.

I pray that the Jewish people who have read this piece will have been drawn by God and their eyes opened to the truth. Yeshua is the only way to our Father in heaven.

“Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me” (John 14:6).

If you are Jewish and you feel a tugging on your heart, I will show you how to become a Jewish follower of Yeshua:
