John 19:28-37, Revelation 22:20, Luke 22:41-42, Isaiah 53:4-6, John 14:6, Acts 4:12

Summary: There have been figures throughout history who have had a way with words that have changed lives as well as the destinies of nations. However, the three words Jesus said from the cross – “It is Finished!” – gave humanity freedom and forgiveness from sin forever.

There have been people who, throughout the progression of civilization, have had a way with words and seem to possess a unique grasp of language. They have an eloquence of speech, saying things that are deeply profound. The Lord Jesus was just such a person. Throughout the years of His recorded ministry (John 20:30-31, 21:25), one thing about Him that kept the people’s attention was His ability to say things in a manner that had never been said before. All one has to do is read through the Gospels and see that this is proven beyond question.

At the conclusion of the Sermon on the Mount, the apostle Matthew wrote that the people were astonished at His doctrine because He had taught the Scriptures with “power and authority” (Matthew 7:28-29). Luke wrote that the people who heard Jesus teach were amazed at the power of His words (Luke 4:22). This authority was even seen by His enemies as a demonstration of power they had never encountered (John 7:46). Look for yourself and read verses such as John 8:58, 10:30, 14:1-3, 9, and Revelation 22:20 to see that our LORD’s words are a treasure of theological truth and give us an understanding of just Who He is. He is no sage, guru, or mere teacher of noble acts but is God Almighty in the flesh. There is no room or need for any other speculation.

Upon the cross, in His final moments of life, having undergone an agony and torment that no ordinary man in his own strength could ever endure, is where He says the words that summarize His entire reason for coming to this world – “IT IS FINISHED!” (John 19:30). This was no cry of defeat and despair but of victory. The sin debt we possess was fully and completely paid for courtesy of God Almighty, who graciously and lovingly provided us the Perfect and Sinless sacrifice for sin that we could never hope to present or perform in our corrupt and reprobate condition (Isaiah 45:11; Ephesians 2:8-9).

The pain that the Lamb of God endured on our behalf was done for you and me (Isaiah 50:6; Matthew 27:26-30, 38; Luke 22:63-64; John 20:25), and in no way even begins to scratch the surface of the suffering He endured for us. He willingly drank the bitter cup (Matthew 26:36-46; Mark 14:32-42; Luke 22:39-46; John 18:1) that had the poison of our iniquities (Isaiah 53:6) within it.

When He was on that cross, He literally became the sins of the world (2 Corinthians 5:21). God the Father, who does not tolerate sin, judged His own Son as if He were every sinner who ever lived, which in and of itself was the greatest agony that Jesus was ever forced to endure. For the first time ever, a gulf existed between Him and the Father. The Savior literally experienced every person’s death and hell while on that cross.

Stop for a moment and let that sink in. You and I should have been on that cross to endure the pain, agony, and certain judgment we deserve for our sins and the wretchedness of our character that would have sent us to a real and horrid eternal hell. Save for the intervention of our Creator in an act of love and compassion we do not deserve, He graciously offers us this act of wondrous mercy.

When the Lord Jesus reached the end of His ministry on the cross, He finished a work that had begun before the formation of the world (Revelation 13:8). From the beginning of time, God had always planned to send His Son to the cross to die for sinners. This promise was made to Adam and Eve in the Garden after they sinned (Genesis 3:15). This was shown in the offerings and sacrifices that were done first in the Tabernacle and later in the Temple. The necessity of a blood sacrifice to atone for sin was seen first in the act of Abel (Genesis 4:4) when he brought a lamb to be offered. After the flood, Noah presented a sacrifice to the LORD as a thanksgiving for sparing them by means of the ark (Genesis 8:20-22) and a promise from God never to destroy the earth with a flood again.

As the nation of Israel was preparing to leave Egypt, God instructed Moses and the people to celebrate this act of freedom by establishing the Passover and the sacrifice of a lamb (Exodus 12). When Israel entered the Promised Land and settled it, the act of blood atonement continued for centuries as a representation of God’s forgiveness of both their personal and national sins. However, this act of atonement had to be continual since we continually sin, and the rivers of blood from lambs, goats, and other animals could not continue. There had to be a final and complete act of sacrifice that would atone for the sins of not just God’s chosen people but for all people both then and now.

The faithful remnant of Israel looked forward to the Promised “Messiah,” who would fulfill the words of the prophets and be that final act of atonement required from God.

The sacrifices we read of in the Old Testament did nothing to remove the sins of the people once and for all. It was the death of the Lord Jesus Christ on the cross that dealt with the sin issue forever! (Hebrews 9:12-14, 10:10-14). The cross was not a fluke of history or something which caught God off guard. It was preconceived before this universe ever came into existence, and the forces of evil would not be able to stop it (1 Corinthians 2:7-9; Ephesians 1:4).

Because of the cross and those words uttered from the Savior -“IT IS FINISHED!” – no other work needs to be done, improved upon, or added. It is not “Jesus and,” or “Jesus along with” or Jesus plus.” The act of redemption was complete on that cross, period. We do not need to add rituals, objects, penances, journeys, or anything else, as is the tradition and thinking of fallen humanity.

We do not need to wonder if there is another way or direction along with what Jesus Christ declared (John 14:6). The Sovereign of the Universe provides only ONE way by which we may be saved (Acts 4:12). That in itself is a finished and non-negotiable declaration that we dare not challenge or dispute. The work of Jesus Christ should bring us to our knees and even hide our face before Him who is holy, righteous, majestic, and loving. We are undeserving of this wonderful mercy and grace. There is nothing preventing you from coming to Him and surrendering your life to Him, receiving the forgiveness and loving embrace He willingly provides (Matthew 11:28-30). Your sins have been atoned for, and you are free from the grip of sin, death, and hell.

When He said, IT IS FINISHED,” it was a done deal, and for that, we say, “Great is the LORD” Amen.

Jeremiah 29:11; “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” (ESV, all emphasis mine)

Psalm 25:4-5; “Make me to know Your ways, Oh Lord, teach me Your paths. Lead me in Your truth and teach me, for You are the God of my Salvation; for You I wait all the day long.”

Psalm 33:20-22; “Our soul waits for the Lord; He is our help and our shield. For our heart is glad in Him, because we trust in His Holy name. Let your steadfast love, Oh Lord, be upon us, even as we hope in You.”

Psalm 42:11; “Why are you cast down Oh my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise Him, my Salvation and my God.”

Psalm 119:114; “You are my hiding place, and my shield; I hope in your word.”

Isaiah 40:30-31; “Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.”

Micah 7:7; “But as for me, I will look to the Lord; I will wait for the God of my Salvation; My God will lead me.”

So far, this has covered a few verses from the Old Testament about our Heavenly Father and how any hope we may have in Him is not misplaced. All the recipients of these verses were still under the Mosaic Law and had not received the gift of eternal life that our Precious Savior provided with His sinless blood sacrifice. Until that time came, sacrifices had to be made on a regular basis and according to the strict instructions from the Father to temporarily cover sins.

At the cross, Our Savior’s blood reached back to those who had been in the will of the Father, and all the way forward to the end of the Millennial Reign for all who would receive and accept His gift. For those pre-calvary who worshiped other gods and who died out of God’s will, they received a reservation in line at the Great White Throne Judgment of Revelation 20:11-15.

We are given encouragement in the New Testament about our eternal hope secured for us by our Savior. The sacrifice for all our sins was made once and for all who would receive and accept Jesus.

Romans 5:1-5; “Therefore since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through Him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance; and endurance produces character; and character produces hope; and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.”

Romans 15:13; “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit, you may abound in hope.”

Hebrews 10:23; “Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.”

Hebrews 11:1; “Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for; the conviction of things not seen.”

1 Peter 1:3-5; “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ according to His great mercy, He has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead; to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled and unfading; kept in Heaven for you; who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a Salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.”

1 Peter 3:15-16; “But in your hearts, honor Christ the Lord as Holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect; having a good conscience so that when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame.”

There is a saying that “a person can live 40 days without food, 4 days without water, 4 minutes without air, but only 4 seconds without hope” (John Calvin Maxwell; American Author; focusing on leadership). While this may seem a bit extreme, anyone without hope will be in a state of misery. All who are without Jesus in their lives and have no hope of an eternal life with Him would fall into this category. This world can only supply what some believe they need for only a limited time.

To die without Jesus as Savior is an instant awakening to an enormous eternal mistake. This was evidenced by the parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus in Luke 16:19-31. Their suffering begins immediately, while the death of a believer starts our eternity of eternal life.

Having a true relationship with Jesus is knowing that, no matter what this life brings, we have an eternal home with Him. A hymn from 1868 by Septimus Winner speaks of a hope that all who are part of the Savior’s flock have. It’s titled “Whispering Hope.”

1.) Soft as the voice of an angel, breathing a lesson unheard, hope with a gentle persuasion, whispers her comforting word. Wait till the darkness is over; wait till the tempest is done. Hope for the sunshine tomorrow, after the darkness is gone.

(ref) Whispering Hope; Oh how welcome Thy voice, making my heart in its sorrow rejoice.

2.) If, in the dark of the twilight, dim be the region afar, will not the deepening darkness brighten the glimmering star? Then, when the night is upon us, why should the heart sink away? When the dark midnight is over, watch for the breaking of day. (ref)

3.) Hope as an anchor so steadfast rends the dark veil for the soul. Whether the master has entered, robbing the grave of its goal. Come then; Oh come glad fruition; come to my sad weary heart. Come, Oh thou blest hope of glory; never, Oh never depart.

False prophets and antichrists are out in full force leading souls to seek worldly pleasures over the love of our Jesus. This is a time that is given to us in the Bible with end of this age prophecies. Our Heavenly Father is not being taken by surprise as the earth’s timeline is right on schedule. Soon, there will be an evil world leader that will come forth, and this earth will be in an awful tribulation period.

This can be avoided by all who have Jesus in their hearts as their eternal Savior. All who have this will not see the antichrist or the 7-year wrath period. Romans 10:9-13 gives the steps to Salvation, and the final verse states it best; “All who call on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

Today would be an excellent time to make your “reservation” for the trip up to meet the Lord in the air in what is known as the Rapture. To delay could be the most costly mistake anyone could ever make. Definitely hope to see you at the feet of Jesus!
