Hospitals limited access to Covid patients on ventilators, giving healthcare workers fewer opportunities to check on them. That meant patients required more powerful sedatives to keep them from pulling out throat tubes due to the gag reflex. Sedation increases risk for delirium, and delirium increases likelihood of long-term confusion and death.
