The American Philosophy :: By Dr. Donald Whitchard

“Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil, that put darkness for light and light for darkness, that put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight! Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink, which justify the guilty for reward and take away the righteousness of the right from him!” (Isaiah 5:20-23, KJV).

“Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people” (Proverbs 14:34, KJV).

This is a sermon I presented around five years ago and recently reviewed for any rewrites, revisions, or updates. Considering all the chaos, anger, and the all too obvious growing moral rot we are experiencing in this country, I saw no need to really change what the LORD had impressed upon me at that time because, even today, it still calls out to all who have ears to hear. What I have discovered through study and research was that there had been essentially two categories of philosophical thought upon which America had been founded, but now have waged war upon one another. They are Judeo-Christian theology and humanist philosophy.

Citizens and statesmen have declared in days gone by that our nation had been founded on the Word of God and Christian principles, originating with the Mayflower Compact of 1629 that was written by the first settlers who arrived on these shores. They declared that their new country was to be founded on the Gospel of Jesus Christ and laws based on the Bible for the governance of future generations. The nation was to be led by Judeo-Christian theology, the study and application of the attributes of God.

The second school of thought is that of humanism, which is the study of logic and ethical behavior founded on the declaration that humanity is the sum and measure of all things. Our nation has abandoned the theological foundation and has now replaced it with the absurd thought that we can use pure logic and self-conceived ethical standards made in our own image and worldview. As a result, this nation, looked upon by the rest of the world as the leader and symbol of freedom and individuality, is now guilty of immoral and unethical conduct before the majesty and purity of the Sovereign Lord God Almighty, whom we have essentially told to leave us alone.

The abandonment of godly standards and the adoption of a foundation of sand has created a new American philosophy that now redefines law and order that protects no one and is made the villain in society. The American philosophy has told us to embrace self and abandon Christ and redefine truth as whatever seems right to the individual. It has redefined the value of life as the “right” to kill the child in the womb and the elderly in isolation. It has replaced education with indoctrination, molding young minds to hate and demean anything or anyone who would dare to disagree with them, be they peer or parent.

The American philosophy has redefined the meaning of “love” and “family” with the goal of ridding the nation of the traditional structure of the union of man and woman in marriage and redefine love to the point where we are accepting the wretchedness of pedophilia. None of this is good because it has thrown God out of the national fabric, leaving many to wonder why we have reaped a harvest of dung and mud.

Look for yourselves at the result of this godless philosophy our nation has adopted and championed. Our lack of prayer and intercession should have been in place over the years. We have replaced civility and common sense with chaos and anarchy. The riots and unrest often fueled by incompetent local and state support and spun in the media as “peaceful protests” are the results of the implementation of Saul Alinsky’s evil manifesto entitled Rules for Radicals. What are they?

It starts with questioning authority and slandering the objections of opponents and then plants false idealistic thoughts into the minds of the young and gullible, with promises of rewards such as “free college,” “universal income,” “wealth redistribution,” “social justice” and “equality.” Promote the rejection and disrespect for religious convictions and beliefs. Tear down houses of worship and limit all religious activities. Protest the established government with the goal of overthrowing it and the existing society, and form a state where the government has full and complete authority and control over goods and services. This is the definition of socialism and Marxist dogma, and it is in motion today.

American liberalism and humanist ideology have made the message of redemption and salvation through the Lord Jesus Christ an object of slander, blasphemy, ridicule, and hatred. The irony is that Jesus told His disciples that this increase of wickedness and unbelief would be rampant in the last days (Luke 21:12-19), and Paul reaffirmed this in his final letter to Timothy (2 Timothy 3:4-5). Atheists and skeptics openly mock Jesus, denying His existence and Scripture, saying it is nothing more than collections of myths and fables. If this is so, then why are they spending any time even discussing or debating it? Romans 3:10-18 describes these reprobates perfectly.

Our godless American philosophy has redefined truth into whatever one wishes it to be to satisfy their own ego or outlook on life. This type of ridiculous thinking has crept into the church. Most individuals who refer to themselves as “evangelical Christians” do not believe in the inerrancy of the Scriptures; they believe that Jesus may have sinned, or that He is just one of many ways to heaven. There are too many “pastors” behind the pulpits of churches who deny the essential doctrines of Christianity. There are some who do not even believe in God but display a pretense of devotion and piety. If there is no truth, then anything goes (Judges 21:25), and morality has no foundation.

This nation has rendered the unborn, the children, the infirm, and the elderly to be insignificant, unnecessary burdens on society, unworthy of attention with no value or merit. An estimated 60,000,000 known abortions have taken place in America since Roe v. Wade in 1973 allowed the slaughter and dismemberment of unborn babies in the womb up to nine months. State legislatures and wicked governors have signed bills allowing babies to be killed outside the womb and their body parts sold to the highest bidder. The altars of human sacrifice to the demon god Molech, better known as Planned Parenthood, fight tooth and nail against any legislation that would threaten their operations.

There is also the trafficking of minors, child slavery, Satanic rituals that shed their blood, and the rise of abuse, neglect, and molestation from all walks of life.

Senior citizens are disrespected, abandoned, and isolated in nursing homes that are nothing more than holding pens where families have dumped them and walked away. They are left to bear loneliness, grief, and loss of everything they held precious. I have personally witnessed this in my time working with a local nursing home as a chaplain, and I have seen the loss of any will to live in those who never get so much as a few minutes of company from anyone who may care.

The current American philosophy has destroyed almost any love for our country, patriotism, individualism, defense of basic rights and liberties, and the history of our nation and the world in the minds and hearts of the present generation. Too many teachers and administrators in the cesspool known as public education are telling our children to think of themselves as “global citizens” and reject parental authority or guidance, the idea and existence of God and biblical standards, to adopt the belief of “self-worth” and the belief that they are the center of all thought and being.

Christian teachers in public schools are becoming a rarity. The Bible is discouraged, but now schools are welcoming Satanic clubs and practices, gender confusion, transgenderism, sexual orientation workshops, and the embrace of perversions that are best not mentioned.

We have bred in our nation the activism of groups and organizations who want to rid it of the traditional family structure. Motherhood is discouraged, mocked, and criticized while traditional marriage suffers under constant attack. There are calls for eliminating it and for couples to live together without commitment or long-term relationships. Recent laws have redefined marriage as uniting with whoever or whatever one desires. This has opened the door for cases of bigamy, the legalization of child brides, bestiality, and a growing call to legalize pedophilia and define it as an act of “love.” I am being serious.

The multi-billion-dollar pornography industry in America has taken the meaning of “love” and made it into nothing more than a selfish desire of physical gratification with no thought, concern, or responsibility for the victims and participants. Pornography has gone from the “dirty” movie houses of seedy neighborhoods and newsstands to the internet, where it has been a cause of ruined marriages, ministries, and lives lost to sexually transmitted diseases.

By ignoring, mocking, ridiculing, and turning our backs on God, we have reaped an infested crop of addicts, abuse victims, HIV, plagues, hate, government totalitarianism, apathy and a lack of concern for other people, no value for life, ignorance, atheism, disrespect, rage, violence, deceit, fraud, murder, robbery, rape and molestation, and a lack of meaning and purpose. Well, America, I hope that your choice to abandon God was worth it. Even the Prodigal Son would not venture into the pigsty we have allowed this nation to become, content to wallow in its mud and stench.

Is there any place or role in Bible prophecy for our nation like some proponents tend to believe and teach? I have to say, “No.” I do not see it. Why should God favor us to have any part in His plan to redeem His people Israel and renew the world for His glory? Look at what we threw away. We were blessed as a nation with great leaders, abundant resources, the funds to spread the Word of God around the world and send missionaries to preach the good news of Jesus Christ.

We once had churches where the truths of Scripture were preached and affirmed by men who would not bow to the world, called sin for what it was, preached the glory of heaven and the reality of hell, and called all to repent and be saved by Jesus Christ. Our education system was the envy of the world, and the Bible was welcome as both a textbook and source of morality and character development.

Our troubles began when we allowed political leaders, judges, activists, and liberal educators to take these treasures, along with the foundation of Scripture and indirectly permitted them to pull down their leftist pants and relieve themselves on what was once held sacred and priceless. We raised some concern but little else. We threw away our heritage along with the blessings of God and any purpose He may have for us in prophecy, if any part did exist. Humanist philosophies replaced Judeo-Christian standards with a “whatever seems good to you” mindset.

Our once great country had potential, purpose, meaning, vision, and godly direction. Now we have nothing but a reason for the Lord God to pour out His wrath and judgment on us (Romans 1:26-32). Our history is to end on the ash heap of other nations that are now reduced to ruins and artifacts for curious archaeologists. There is no reason to live by what this ever-growing wicked nation, the corrupt world system, or godless people want to throw at you. You do not have to live your life convinced that you are heading for nothing but a grave and a source of flower fertilizer.

Real wisdom is found only in the person and majesty of the Lord Jesus Christ, who, as God incarnate, came to this wicked world to redeem us by offering Himself as the perfect, sinless sacrifice, paying the price for our sins that we could in no way do for ourselves (John 14:6; Acts 4:12; Romans 5:6-11; Ephesians 2:8-9). I ask you to repent of your sins, surrender your life to Jesus Christ, and follow Him. He offers true freedom, true peace, total forgiveness, meaning, the assurance of eternal life, freedom from sin, and to rule and reign with Him in the new heaven and the new earth.

I would love nothing more than to rid ourselves of the philosophies and thinking of wicked and twisted individuals that dragged us into this quagmire. We can be assured that God will save His people, and that the Lord Jesus will soon arrive to take His people out of this world (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18) and bring about the judgments that will end the evils, perversions, and schemes of the devil and his followers once and for all (Revelation 20:11-15). I have had enough of the American philosophy as it stands now and am looking for the “Blessed Hope” of Christ’s return.

Our redemption is drawing near, brethren. Be ready.
