Lessons for America from Deuteronomy :: By Dale V. Nobbman

Moses, in the biblical book of Deuteronomy, Chapter 28, is speaking directly to the ‘chosen people’ of God just prior to the time they were preparing to cross the Jordan River into the Promised Land of Canaan, the country and nation we know as Israel today.

Moses spoke to them about the potential blessings, or curses, which would come upon them, dependent on how well the people would obey the Lord their God concerning all His commandments and statutes after they settled in the Promised Land.

As I read this chapter of Deuteronomy, I could not help but ponder how God may have been speaking indirectly to the future people of the United States of America about potential curses, which could easily happen in our country, especially considering the spiritual, moral, and societal state of decline in our nation today.

I will cite a number of verses from Deuteronomy 28, which seem increasingly applicable to America and the American people today and in the days ahead of us. This chapter offers profound biblical wisdom we should earnestly heed in order to continue receiving our God-given blessings, rather than a plethora of potential curses direct from Almighty God, who not only established the Jewish nation of Israel in ancient times but also established our American nation from its earliest beginning just a few centuries ago.

God has greatly blessed America over the centuries and has graciously utilized us in a special way as a sort of latter-day appointed people and nation, created by God to help make the world a safer and better place to live for people everywhere around the globe.

A great percentage of American people over the years, until recent decades, have always been more than willing to obey God’s ‘Ten Commandments’ and ‘walk in His ways‘ as best we could as a nation, while of course, at the same time, acknowledging our individual and national sinfulness, human weaknesses and failings over these last four centuries.

Let us review a select number of the ‘general’ curses stated by God through Moses in the book of Deuteronomy, which could actually happen in any nation of the world at any time, but let us specifically see how many of these ‘curses’ are beginning to happen and make their appearance manifested through various degrees of severity in America today.

“The Lord will send upon you curses, confusion, and rebuke, in all you undertake to do, until you are destroyed and until you perish quickly, on account of the evil of your deeds, because you have forsaken Me” (Deut. 28: 20).

“The Lord will make the pestilence cling to you” (Deut. 28:21).

“The Lord will smite you with consumption and with fever and with inflammation and with fiery heat and with the sword and with blight and with mildew” (Deut. 38:22).

“The Lord will cause you to be defeated before your enemies; you shall go out one way against them, but you shall flee seven ways before them, and you shall be an example of terror to all the kingdoms of the earth” (Deut. 28:25).

“The Lord will smite you with madness…and with bewilderment of heart” (Deut. 28:28).

“A people whom you do not know shall eat up the produce of your ground and all your labors, and you shall never be anything but oppressed and crushed continually” (Deut. 28:33).

“And you shall be driven mad by the sight of what you see” (Deut. 28:34).

“The Lord will bring you and your king, whom you shall set over you, to a nation which neither you nor your fathers have known” (Deut. 28:36).

“You shall bring out much seed to the field but you shall gather in little, for the locust shall consume it” (Deut. 28:38).

“You shall have sons and daughters but they shall not be yours, for they shall go into captivity” (Deut. 28:41).

“The alien who is among you shall rise above you higher and higher, but you shall go down lower and lower” (Deut. 28:43).

“So all these curses shall come on you and pursue you and overtake you until you are destroyed, because you would not obey the Lord your God by keeping His commandments and His statutes” (Deut. 28:45).

“The Lord will bring a nation against you from afar…a nation whose language you shall not understand, a nation of fierce countenance who shall have no respect for the old, nor show favor to the young” (Deut. 28:49-50).

“Then the Lord will bring extraordinary plagues on you and your descendants, even severe and lasting plagues, and miserable and chronic sicknesses” (Deut. 28:59)

“The Lord will give you a trembling heart, failing of eyes, and despair of soul. Your life shall hang in doubt before you; and you shall be in dread night and day, and shall have no assurance of your life” (Deut. 28:65-66).

These curses from God are downright ‘chilling’ to me, and should be to anyone who thinks seriously about them and takes them to heart. Remember, elections matter!

Keep the curses in mind as our American freedoms are increasingly encroached upon by socialist policies. Freedom of religion and family values used to be the cornerstones of our nation. Socialist ideology, subversion and corruption are threatening our traditional American freedoms, family values, society and culture. We get what we vote for!

Is it too late for God to heal our land? It depends on us and if we are willing to ask for forgiveness of our sins, and as a nation once again walk in His ways. What say you?
