Dead Man Walking :: By Clay Smith

Now, this is an interesting title isn’t it? Plus, it qualifies for a possible oxymoron. I’ve known some dead men, but they weren’t walking as best as I could tell; and with this title, there are two distinct realities attributed to it that I will explain. By the way, this is also a title for a movie that was made years ago, but is not what this article is about.

There is a circumstance in which this title is applicable, and it applies to the prisoners that are on “death row” in prison. The prisoners have been given the sentence of death by the jury for the crime they have committed. The last day and hour, they are escorted from their prison cell to the death chamber by taking that “final walk” to their appointment with death, whatever that means will be.

The other position that this applies to (possibly others) is spiritual according to the Bible because the man or woman is as a corpse. They do not have a “living relationship” with Jesus Christ, the Son of God. They are dead in their trespasses and sins; the body is alive, but God’s Spirit is not dwelling in them. If they don’t spiritually change from the inside, they are eternally doomed and cast out from the presence of God forever.

Try to contemplate that for a minute. I hope you are not in this dreadful category; if so, there is a way to escape this real eternal doom. Repent, and believe the Gospel. That’s what Jesus said in Mark 1:15; simple isn’t it? Jesus Christ is the Gospel. Jesus is your escape. In Him, there is Love, Hope, and Eternal Security. There is no other everlasting source or Person that can promise and fulfill this.

Here are two Bible verses for you to reference. Don’t just take my word. Jesus told the Jews in John 5:39, “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.” Always check what the Scripture says.

Ephesians 2:1 “And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins.”

Ephesians 2:5 “Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace are ye saved;).”

The Apostle Paul seems to be writing his letter to the churches in and around the region of Ephesus about their behavior or lack of it. He is reminding them that they were once as dead men “walking,” but have been made alive in Christ; they were “quickened.” They now have love, hope, and eternal security that the devil or no man can take away. These saints have been renewed by making Jesus the Lord of their lives and have passed from “death to life.”

2 Corinthians 5:17 “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things have passed away; behold; all things become new.”

There has been a drastic change in a person’s life immediately when that person surrenders to the Kingship of Jesus Christ. Something new and wonderful has happened; the person changes from a dead person to a new living one “walking “in spirit and truth. DO you want to be that exciting person serving God in joy with the talents and gifts He has placed in you?

You might not know what they are yet, and which ones, but they will be revealed for you to use at the appropriate time. Surrender to the Lord Jesus now by asking Him to come into your heart and life, changing you from dead, to being alive. Go and seek out a true Christian or a pastor of a Bible-believing Church. Don’t be ashamed or keep it private; God has no secret disciples. Read some of these other fine articles on this website for wisdom and encouragement, and email me with your glorious decision.

This article is a warning, but also an encouragement to you that don’t have a real Saviour. Jesus is the only One.  If you have any doubts or don’t quite understand all of it, go back and read this slowly again. Go over the Scriptures in the King James Bible carefully, asking God to give you understanding and to open your eyes to His truth, His Word. My words are not perfectly stated by the way I presented them, but I guarantee His are that were written in the Bible. His Word is complete with truth and wisdom. Seek Him and His Word.
