Christian Rock Music – Part Two :: by Vernon Gray

Is it possible to Worship Satan in the name of Jesus? (con’t)

8. “There’s nothing wrong with rock bands in a church.”
Rebuttal: “They [the priests] have put no difference between the holy and profane, neither have they showed a difference between the unclean and the clean” (Ezekiel 22:29).
There’s supposed to be a difference between holy and profane (godless), clean and unclean, but Christian-rock tries to erase that line.

Numbers 21:1-9 applies to Christian rock. God’s people loathed God’s provision of manna. The things of God weren’t good enough for them. They wanted the things they had when they were back in bondage in Egypt. Today for some Christians, old fashioned traditional Christian music isn’t good enough anymore. Some believers long for the same old garbage that they had back in their unsaved “bondage to sin” days.

2 Corinthians 6:17: “Come out from among them and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing.”

9. “Listening to worldly music is a “youth thing.” You have to be like them to win them over.”

Rebuttal: Listening to worldly music is a “rebellion thing.” Who do you think invented the gospel of Infiltration? Because it is not found in the Bible. As for joining them and then quietly “slipping in” the gospel…

Matthew 5:13: “Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.”

YOU CANNOT MAKE A DIFFERENCE BY BEING NO DIFFERENT!

Mark 8:34: “And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.”

10. “Martin Luther took secular songs, changed the words and made them Christian songs.”

Rebuttal: Martin Luther never chose drinking songs or dance tunes. He spent many hours adjusting the songs so as to de-rythmn the songs. This he did so effectively that sometimes they were unrecognizable by those who knew the songs. Finally, on Luther’s songs; he wrote thirty songs in all. Only one song (and maybe two others which were of unknown origin) were borrowed from the secular world.

11. “Christians in rock are doing it with the right attitude; they are sincere.”

Rebuttal: God cares about how you are doing something as well as why you are doing it.

Consider Saul who, “with the best of intentions” spared Agag and livestock which God had told him to destroy. Saul lost the Kingdom of Israel because of his disobedience.

1 Samuel 15:22: “And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.”

God cares about both motive and method. Another example:

Leviticus 10:1-3: “And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took either of them his censer, and put fire therein, and put incense thereon, and offered strange fire before the LORD, which he commanded them not.

And there went out fire from the LORD, and devoured them, and they died before the LORD. Then Moses said unto Aaron, This is it that the LORD spake, saying, I will be sanctified in them that come nigh me, and before all the people I will be glorified. And Aaron held his peace.”

Notice that Aaron’s sons, Nadab and Abihu were not offering incense to some strange god like Baal. They were offering sacrifices to the true God. They thought that their good motive would make-up for a poor method.

Someone is bound to quote 1 Samuel 16:7: “But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.”

True, God does look upon the heart. But if your heart tells you that your methods are not pleasing to Him; do you say “Well if my motive is to please God, He will accept what I am doing.” Oh really…tell that to Nadab and Abihu; and for that matter to Cain.

Hosea 7:8-10: “Ephraim, he hath mixed himself among the people; Ephraim is a cake not turned. Strangers have devoured his strength, and he knowethit not: yea, gray hairs are here and there upon him, yet he knoweth not. And the pride of Israel testifieth to his face: and they do not return to the LORD their God, nor seek him for all this.”

The danger of motive: Did the Israelites win the pagans of Canaan to the Lord when they mixed with their ways? NOPE. The opposite happened. The Israelites became pagans.

12. “They’re going to listen to rock anyway. This is a better alternative.”
Rebuttal: This is a LIE. Not every new convert is a rock addict, but you can make a new convert a rock addict by feeding him Christian rock. When people get saved from drugs, crime, alcohol and turn fully to Christ, they reject these along with the rock music that came with these things. A better alternative? NO WAY! Christian rock looks the same, sounds the same and produces the same fruit of rebellion. Christian rock teaches children to rebel against authority.

Is ROCK simply a form of harmless entertainment?

As we have seen there is nothing “harmless” about it! A Christian should find “entertainment” not in the world, but he or she should despise the evil things of the world. Our greatest entertainment must be to serve GOD and to draw nigh to Him (through prayer, fasting, study of his word, and the singing of hymns, psalms, and spiritual songs). We can enjoy the fellowship of like-minded believers. We can find relaxation in the outdoors of God’s nature. In these things God is pleased.

13. “We have to use Christian rock because it is the music kids relate to today.”
Rebuttal: 2 Corinthians 6:14-18 tells us to be separate from every ungodly work .

“Touch not the unclean thing” (2 Corinthians 6:17).

Christian rock says, “Touch it all you want.” It is the gospel that relates, convicts and saves people, not rock music or any other ungodly trick. The Holy Spirit’s blessing is on God’s Word, not on Pagan noise.

14. “God created music, and everything God created is good, so rock music must be good and godly too.”
Rebuttal: The day Lucifer fell, music fell also. Music once used to worship Almighty God has been corrupted. Lucifer uses that music to get worship for himself, because he craved it.

15. “Music is the universal language teens understand, so we use Christian rock music to speak their language.”
Rebuttal: The Holy Spirit has spoke to people for 6000 years without rock music.

Rock noise drowns out the Holy Spirit’s voice. The pastors, not kids are supposed to run the church.

16. “Kids won’t stay in a stuffy. They need excitement or we’ll lose them.”
Rebuttal: Give them the excitement of full-surrender to Jesus Christ and Soul Winning as a goal in life, not selfish rock music entertainment. We are not here to be entertained but to win a lost world to Christ.

The real battle is not about a musical generation gap, it’s about SUBMISSION vs. REBELLION. Submission is the hallmark of the Christian life. Without it, all you have is counterfeit spirituality. To resist the devil, you must first be submitted to God (James 4:7). Since rock fans aren’t truly submitted, they’ll never be able to resist Satan, no matter how often they sing, “To Hell with the Devil” (by Stryper).

The classic hymns so despised by youth today were all about SUBMISSION.
That’s why carnal Christians want no part of them.

Songs like: Washed in the Blood, Haven of Rest, Jesus Paid It All, To God Be the Glory, Lord, I’m Coming Home, Victory in Jesus, Have Thine Own Way, Lord, When I Survey the Wondrous Cross, Take My Life and Let It Be, I Surrender All, Jesus Is All the World to Me. These are all songs of SUBMISSION. Here’s a lyrical example from just one of them:

“Have thine own way, Lord, have thine own way, thou art the potter, I am the clay. Mold me and make me after thy will while I am waiting, yielded and still…”

Now read any rock lyrics to see the difference between submission and rebellion:

17. “No one can live under those kind of rules. It’s too hard and legalistic.”
Rebuttal: How harsh of God to ask us to obey Him. Jesus was willing to obey the Father to die for our sins.

2 Timothy 4:3: “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but will heap to themselves teachers ….”

Isaiah 30:10: “Who say to the seers, “Do not see,” and to the prophets, “Do not prophesy to us right things; speak to us smooth things, prophesy deceits.

Israel wanted to hear smooth things. Rock is a tool of Satan because it blocks the path to self-denial, purity, holiness, separation and total devotion to the Lord Jesus Christ.

18. “Times have changed. The old ways don’t work anymore. We should update.”
Rebuttal: The old ways you are tossing away are God’s ways. They worked well for 6000 years. When we pray, clearly preach the gospel, the Holy Spirit convicts and draws lost sinners to repentance and faith in Christ.

“Thus saith the Lord…ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein” (Jeremiah 6:16).

19. “Kids get saved thru Christian rock.”
Rebuttal: Fleshly lusts war against the soul. They don’t get saved from worldliness by Christian rock. We cannot fight the flesh with the flesh. There is an interesting story in Exodus 32. The children of Israel saw Moses go up onto mount Sinai. He had been gone a long time and they decided that he was not coming back, so they made a golden calf “in honor” of God in order to “worship” Him.

Exodus 32: 5-8: “And when Aaron saw it, he built an altar before it; and Aaron made proclamation, and said, ‘Tomorrow is a feast to the LORD.’ And they rose up early on the morrow, and offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play.

And the LORD said unto Moses, ‘Go, get thee down; for thy people, which thou broughtest out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves: they have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them: they have made them a molten calf, and have worshipped it, and have sacrificed thereunto, and said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which have brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.’”

Notice what God says: “…they have corrupted themselves.” They had fooled themselves into idolatry with music and festivities that God had not given them. Today is no different! Many are embracing Christian rock and other so-called Christian music in the misguided belief that their music is, “Praising God.” They have corrupted themselves into thinking that their music is: “Worship.”

THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT THEY DID HERE WITH THE GOLDEN CALF.

1. Romans 12:2:

a) “Be not conformed to this world.”

Rock music people try to be as much like the world as possible.

b) “Be ye transformed…”

Your life is supposed to change when you get saved. Christianity isn’t supposed to change itself to suit you. No change in life, means no salvation.

c) “By the renewing of your mind…” Once saved, your mind should do a complete turnaround. You should see this trash music for what it is.

2. 1 Peter 4:3, 4: “For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries: Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you…”

Once you are saved, old friends will think it strange that you no longer run with them to the old worldly junk.

Finally, I ask the question again:

“Is it possible to worship Satan in the name of Jesus?”

I think the answer is obvious!
