Alleged Israeli Airstrikes This Week Around Damascus, Syria. On Monday night, an alleged Israeli airstrike targeted sites south of Damascus. The Syrian Capital Voice site reported that the strike had targeted a factory for developing Iranian weapons in the town of Aqraba. On Tuesday night, Syrian reports alleged that Israeli tanks targeted positions belonging to the Syrian military near El Malgah in the Quneitra region. After the alleged tank fire, Israeli aircraft dropped leaflets warning that Israel would not tolerate any presence of the Syrian military in the demilitarized zone, according to the opposition-affiliated Radio Houran. Syrian reports stated that an Israeli bombing had damaged the Damascus Airport runway after targeting “warehouses of Iranian militias” near the airport on Thursday. Syria’s state media claimed Israel has carried out strikes against targets south of Damascus Friday morning.

Israel has carried out numerous strikes in the Damascus region and elsewhere, trying to prevent transfer of weapons and Iran’s foothold in Syria. The urgency is increased as Iran’s Islamic Republic, brazenly vocal in its intent to obliterate Israel, is inches closer to obtaining a nuclear weapon. It would appear that Isaiah 17 will be fulfilled before long.

2 monkeypox strains in U.S. suggest possible undetected spread. Many of the U.S. cases were caused by the same strain as recent cases in Europe, but a few samples show a different strain. Each strain had been seen in U.S. cases last year (both from the milder West Africa version). Analysis from many more patients will be needed to determine how long monkeypox has been circulating in the U.S. and elsewhere. The findings mean the outbreak likely will be difficult to contain, said Dr. Angela Rasmussen, a virologist at the University of Saskatchewan. No monkeypox deaths have been reported in the U.S. or Europe so far. But that could change if infections start occurring in more vulnerable people, like very young children or people with weakened immune systems, Rasmussen said.

The number of known U.S. monkeypox cases has increased to 21 in 11 states as of June 3. Hundreds of other cases have been found in other countries, many tied to sexual activity at two recent raves in Europe. So far, many of the reported cases outside Africa have been in men who have sex with men, but health officials stress that anyone can get monkeypox.

When nuclear plants close in the U.S., they’re replaced by gas-fired generation. That happened in New York after the closure of the Indian Point Energy Center and in Vermont after the premature shuttering of Vermont Yankee. The closure of such plans increases electricity costs because generators must burn more natural gas to produce power – and gas prices are soaring.
