Lord of the Sabbath (Matthew 12:1-14) :: By Donald Whitchard

Scripture: Exodus 31:15Colossians 1:16-17Hosea 6:6Matthew 12:1-8

Summary: In this chapter, Jesus teaches the true meaning of the “Sabbath” and how it is to bring glory to God, not to be used as a religious weapon. The hostility toward Jesus was starting to grow.

Before we undergo any further study of this chapter, it would be helpful to understand the concept of the “Sabbath.” According to the fourth commandment (Exodus 20:8), the Sabbath was set aside as one day in seven to cease from labor and take a rest from all unnecessary activity.

Exodus 31:15 and 34:21 set boundaries for the observance of the Sabbath, and Isaiah 53:13-14 proclaim blessings on those who faithfully and willingly keep it in accordance with the law and will of God. God said that there would be penalties for violations of the Sabbath, such as rotten manna (Exodus 16:27-28) and the death penalty for disobedience (Exodus 31:14).

God does not tolerate any sin against Him, and He has not softened His stance (Romans 3:23, 6:23). Unless we accept the free offer of salvation offered by God through the Lord Jesus Christ, we will eternally bear our punishment for our sins in a very real, literal hell (Isaiah 1:18Matthew 25:41Mark 9:43-48Luke 16:19-31John 5:28-29; 14:6; Acts 4:12, 20, 16:30-31; 2 Corinthians 5:10Philippians 2:8-9Hebrews 9:27Revelation 20:11-15).

Israel’s history is filled with the consequences of violating the laws and direction of God, and as a result, it was destroyed, sent into exile, and put under foreign rule. The nation of Israel did not come back into existence until May 14, 1948.

The religious leaders of Israel at that time primarily consisted of the Pharisees and the Sadducees. The Pharisees were adherents to the whole of the Scriptures and, at first, were faithful to the Lord in that regard. Over time, however, they began to add regulations and restrictions over what could and could not be done on the Sabbath.

They set rules over how long a day’s journey should be on the Sabbath. They defined what violated labor restrictions and began to add penalties that did not align with Scripture, becoming slaves to traditions and protocols that aligned with personal opinions and interpretations. The prescribed day of rest became a day of dread and fear of violating the teachings of generations of rabbinical ideas.

Here is where the Pharisees and their traditions clashed with the teachings of the Lord Jesus, who is God in the flesh and the Author of the Law. The opening verses of Chapter 12 begin with Jesus and His disciples walking past a grain field, plucking the heads of the grain off the husks (vv.1-8). This took place on a Sabbath day, but they were also hungry. None of this should have even been an issue. The Pharisees who saw this happen admonished the Lord for what they were doing – a form of threshing and reaping, according to the tradition of Pharisaic teachings.

The Pharisees’ zeal for keeping the Sabbath regulations overtook the concept behind the Sabbath. It was a day to honor God and cease from labor, such as one’s occupation, giving mind, soul, and body a break. How did Jesus handle this situation? Instead of dwelling upon what tradition and legality had supposedly been violated, Jesus reminded them about what David had done on the Sabbath (1 Samuel 21:1-9). He had met the requirements for the taking of the sacred bread from the priests. Jesus Himself certainly met and excelled in meeting all requirements for the Sabbath. He created it (Colossians 1:16-17). He kept the Law perfectly.

Instead of worshipping the Lord of the Sabbath, the Pharisees had placed more emphasis on the day itself. The Sabbath became an object of veneration, and hence, an idol, which was a violation of the first and second commandments (Exodus 20:1-3). Not only did the Pharisees embrace legalism over the Lord, but they also lacked mercy, an attribute of God that they should have exemplified (Hosea 6:6).

After leaving the grain field (vv. 9-14), Jesus headed to the nearby synagogue for worship. The Pharisees followed Him, looking for another opportunity to confront Him.

There was a man in the synagogue who had a withered hand. He was brought to Jesus to be healed. The question arose on whether it was lawful to heal on the Sabbath. This incident is also found in Mark 3:1-5 and Luke 6:6-11. Jesus raised the question in Mark and Luke’s account; but in Matthew’s account, He asked the Pharisees and the others whether they would rescue a sheep that fell into a ditch on the Sabbath. Of course they would! He then asked, “Of how much more value is a man over a sheep? So it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath” (v.12).

With that, He asked the man to stretch out his hand, and it was immediately healed. The Pharisees had no Scripture or logical reason to refute what was an obvious miracle from God. Instead of rejoicing and glorifying God for His grace, mercy, and blessings, it instead made them angry and even more determined to get rid of Jesus. Well, so much for honoring the sixth commandment.

We get amused and angry at the blatant hypocrisy and contempt of the Pharisees and their use of religion to justify their own traditions and practices. Things have not changed. If Jesus came to your church this Sunday and performed the same miracles as we read about in the Word, and taught as He did, would you be honored, humbled, and grateful, or would you get mad at Him for upsetting your routine and tradition? Think long and hard before you answer. Have you made Him the Lord and Master of your life, or does “business as usual” take His place?

Desperate and Searching :: By Daymond Duck

On May 15, 2025, Harbingers Daily posted an article by Dean Dwyer, long-time Pastor and President of Eiser Street Baptist Church in Queensland, Australia.

Here is part of what Dwyer wrote:

>It seems that nearly everywhere you turn, people are talking about peace.

>On every continent and in nearly every country, leaders are holding out hope that somebody will be able to advance the cause of peace throughout the world.  Many are desperate for a resolution to the problems plaguing the world, and we know that desperate and spiritually blind people often lack sufficient discernment to make good decisions.  There is already a Prince of Peace, but since most of the world has rejected Him, a counterfeit will soon arrive.  The world’s longing for peace and safety will play into the hands of the Antichrist, who will convince the world that only he can provide the lasting peace and security that has long been desired.

>Peace is on the lips of many at present, and what is interesting to note is that the UN has scheduled a high-level conference on the Two-State solution to take place from June 2-4, 2025, in New York.  So that nobody is left with any doubts as to the intention of the summit, it is being referred to as the “Peaceful settlement of the question of Palestine and implementation of the Two-State solution.” As this date approaches, expect to hear more and more about “peace.” Whether or not anything tangible will come out of the summit remains to be seen.  But it reminds us that as the world desperately searches for peace, it will soon welcome a person who will ultimately bring it anything but.

Dwyer definitely has a good knowledge of the Scriptures and an understanding of the current political situation.

In the days of the prophet Joel, God warned that He would deal with the nations because they had scattered His people and divided His land (Joel 3:2).

And in the days of the prophet Daniel, God warned that a coming leader (the Antichrist) would confirm (strengthen) a worthless covenant with many for peace in the Middle East (Dan. 9:27).

Starting on May 13, 2025, Pres. Trump:

  • Visited the Middle East and discussed peace (normalization agreements) between several Arab nations and Israel.
  • Met with the new president of Syria and discussed peace with Israel.
  • Met with an official of Iran and discussed an agreement to peacefully settle the controversy over Iran’s quest for nuclear weapons.

Pres. Trump has been clear that he prefers to be a Pres. of peace instead of a Pres. of war.

When asked about the signs of His Second Coming, Jesus said there will be wars and rumors of wars.

There are so many wars and rumors of wars today, the world seems to be desperately searching for peace.

Here are some articles that seem to indicate that the end of the age is near.

One, concerning peace and Iran: on May 15, 2025, U.S. Sec. of State Marco Rubio said:

>Our problem is not with the Iranian people. The Iranian people are a peaceful people, an ancient civilization and culture we admire greatly.

>Our problem is with a clerical regime that is behind every problem in the region: Hezbollah, Hamas, the Houthis, the militias that have conducted attacks out of Iraq and Syria.”

>All of those terror groups track back to the Iranian regime.

>All the instability in Syria tracks back to the Iranian regime.

>It’s a regime that every day and every Friday chants, ‘death to Israel, death to America.’

>We have to believe them when they say that.

>The Iranian regime must never get nuclear weapons.

>The end decision lies in the hands of one person, and that’s the supreme leader in Iran, and I hope he chooses the path of peace and prosperity, not a destructive path.

>We’ll see how that plays out.

Two, concerning peace and Iran: on May 18, 2025:

Trump’s Special Envoy Steve Witkoff said

  • We have one very, very clear red line, and that is enrichment. We cannot allow even 1% of an enrichment capability. Everything begins… with a deal that does not include enrichment… because enrichment enables weaponization. And we will not allow a bomb to get here.
  • Iran’s foreign minister responded on X: Enrichment in Iran… will continue with or without a deal. If the US is interested in ensuring that Iran will not have nuclear weapons, a deal is within reach.

Three, concerning peace and Hamas: on May 15, 2025, Pres. Trump said Hamas is going to have to be dealt with (in order to bring peace in Gaza).

Here are some daily updates on the war.

  • On May 16, 2025, Israel escalated its airstrikes in the Gaza Strip by attacking more than 150 targets in 24 hours. Netanyahu’s promised ground invasion appeared to be imminent. The U.S. and Qatar were searching for a way to bring about a ceasefire.
  • During the late hours of May 16, 2025, Israel said it is working to seize strategic areas of the Gaza Strip in preparation for expanding its military campaign there.
  • On May 17, 2025, Hamas said it would return to ceasefire negotiations.
  • On May 18, 2025, Israeli Prime Min. Netanyahu confirmed that ceasefire negotiations are underway, and he repeated that Israel is open to ending the fighting if Hamas is disarmed and all the remaining hostages are released.
  • On May 19, 2025, it was reported that Israel had struck more than 160 targets in the Gaza Strip in the past 24 hours.

(Update: On May 19, 2025, Israel ordered the total evacuation of Khan Younis, a major city in Gaza.)

Four, concerning the Houthis in Yemen: on May 16, 2025, 15 Israeli jets dropped 35 bombs on two Houthi ports, so the Houthis now have no place for large ships to dock.

Five, concerning the Two-State Solution: on May 16, 2025, a reader sent the following to me and said it was from Bubba News Telegram:

  • The June 2-4, 2025, UN meeting on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is no longer scheduled.
  • It has been rescheduled/replaced by the France and Saudi Arabia-backed conference on a 2-state solution, now set for June 17-20, 2025, at UN headquarters in NYC.
  • No evidence currently suggests that a separate meeting is still planned for June 2-4.
  • The “High-level International Conference for the Peaceful Settlement of the Question of Palestine and the Implementation of the Two-State Solution” is the primary event, co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia, aimed at advancing UN resolutions on the two-state solution.
  • It was mandated by a September 2024 General Assembly resolution and is now scheduled for June 17-20, 2025.

(Update: On May 19, 2025, it was reported that Israel’s Prime Minister Netanyahu called it “a huge prize for terror.”)

(My opinion: The desperate search of unbelieving world leaders for peace and safety is on the verge of a giant step toward the Tribulation Period.)

Five, concerning the Two-State Solution (the division of Israel) and God’s threat to drag the nations into the Battle of Armageddon for that (Joel 3:2): on May 19, 2025, France, Canada, and the UK released a communique that said in part:

  • The level of human suffering in Gaza is intolerable. We call on the Israeli government to stop its military operations in Gaza and immediately allow humanitarian aid to enter.
  • If Israel does not cease the renewed military offensive and lift its restrictions on humanitarian aid, we will take further concrete actions in response.
  • pointing to an upcoming international conference co-chaired by Saudi Arabia and France, scheduled to take place next month (June 17-20) in New York.
  • We must all work toward the implementation of a two-state solution, which is the only way to bring long-lasting peace and security that both Israelis and Palestinians deserve and ensure long-term stability in the region.

(My opinion: The Two-State Solution will not bring peace and security – peace and safety. It will not stabilize the Middle East. As I said above, it will be a major step toward the beginning of the Tribulation Period, and that is where all of this is heading. The core problem is not Israel defending itself against Hamas. It is radical Muslims trying to conquer the world for Allah.)

Six, concerning peace between Russia and Ukraine: on May 19, 2025, Pres. Trump said he had a two-hour conversation with Russian Pres. Putin.

Trump added that Russia and Ukraine will immediately start negotiations toward a ceasefire and, more importantly, an end to the war.

According to Trump, the Vatican is interested in hosting the negotiations.

(My comment: Be aware that God said He would put hooks in Gog’s jaw, turn him back and drag him and his allies – Iran, etc. – onto the mountains of Israel in the latter days and latter years; Ezek. 38:4. We don’t know that this is it, but it bears watching).

Seven, concerning natural disasters increasing in frequency and intensity at the end of the age: on May 17, 2025, it was reported that a massive dust storm struck Chicago’s 2.6 million people that was so big and bad, it could be seen from space.

The National Weather Service issued a dust storm warning for only the second time in history, and a Chicago meteorologist said this was the first dust storm to ever hit Chicago.

Visibility was near zero, wind gusts were up to 60 mph, and after many accidents, people were told not to travel unless it was absolutely necessary.

Eight, concerning the moral decline of America at the end of the age, here is a link to an excellent three-minute video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTB4aTGaG_M&t=15s

Nine, concerning the long-awaited battle of Gog and Magog, on May 21, 2025, Iran’s parliament ratified a new agreement with Russia.

It reportedly stops short of a mutual defense clause, but it commits both nations to respond to common military threats, advance military-technical collaboration, and engage in joint military exercises.

FYI: God does not send anyone to Hell (all of us are born with a sin nature and destined to go to Hell because we sin), but God has provided a way (Jesus) for everyone to go to Heaven (and He is the only way to get there; John 14:6).

Finally, are you Rapture Ready?

If you want to be rapture ready and go to heaven, you must be born again (John 3:3). God loves you, and if you have not done so, sincerely admit that you are a sinner; believe that Jesus is the virgin-born, sinless Son of God who died for the sins of the world, was buried, and raised from the dead; ask Him to forgive your sins, cleanse you, come into your heart and be your Saviour; then tell someone that you have done this.
