In the Congo, a measles outbreak has killed at least a hundred children since the beginning of the year, adding to a medical and security crisis that already included Ebola, cholera, and factional violence that makes it difficult for doctors to treat any of the deadly diseases.
The Ebola virus has claimed nearly 500 people, including 97 children in the Congo since the outbreak began last August. The death toll may continue to climb as the number of cases has doubled in January from 20 to 40 a week, with 120 new cases coming in the last few weeks of the month.
Controversial lab studies that modify bird flu viruses in ways that could make them more risky to humans will soon resume after being on hold for over 4 years. Science Insider has learned that last year a US government review panel quietly approved experiments proposed by two labs that were previously considered so dangerous that federal officials had imposed an unusual top-down moratorium on this kind of research. The outcome may not satisfy scientists who believe that certain studies that aim to make pathogens more potent or more likely to spread in mammals are so risky that they should be limited or even banned.

According to a global scientific review, over 40% of insect species are threatened with extinction and a third are endangered. The main causes given were (in order of its importance): 1) habitat loss, 2) synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, 3) biological factors, including pathogens and invasive species, and 4) climate change. In Chicago, Illinois, Gary Martin, an employee of a manufacturing company, opened fire at its plant Friday, killing five people and wounding five police officers before he was fatally shot. He may have known he was going to be fired when he came to the meeting where he began shooting. Police released the names of the employees who were killed. Martin was not supposed to own a gun because of a 1995 aggravated assault conviction in Mississippi. He had a long history of violence: stabbing one girlfriend and threatening to kill another.

The Presidents of Turkey, Iran and Russia (the prophesied alliance that will attack Israel, led by Russia in Ezekiel 38-39) gathered in Sochi at the end of last week to discuss Syria. This direct challenge to US power in the Middle East was scheduled to coincide with the US-led meeting in Warsaw that included calls by Washington to challenge Iran.
The Islamic Republic of Iran celebrated its 40th anniversary of the revolution that created the current terrorist government. The government celebrated by making threats against Israel and America.
Iranian President Rouhani said Iran is determined to expand its military power and ballistic missile program despite mounting pressure from other countries. “We have not asked and will not ask for permission to develop different types of…missiles and will continue our path and our military power,” Rouhani said.
Russian military will resume fighter patrols to the North Pole for the first time in 30 years. The patrols will be in addition to regular bomber flights up to the edge of U.S. and Canadian airspace.
In the Ukraine, Russian occupation forces are attacking Ukrainian troops, and casualties have been reported.
China is aggressively unleashing lethal fully autonomous drones that can carry out targeted military strikes. The killer drones and pilotless aircraft fitted with AK-47 rifles are being exported to Asia, Africa and combat zones in the Middle East.
In Israel, Avigdor Liberman said that an assessment of military intelligence published on Wednesday, which indicated it is likely that Israel will have a major escalation within the next 12 months with Gaza or the West Bank, “is completely consistent with my assessments over the past year. The question now is not ‘Will there be another confrontation with Hamas in the Gaza Strip?’ but rather ‘When will this happen?’”

In Haiti, people have taken to the streets this past week to protest soaring inflation and corruption in the government which they say reaches all the way up to President Jovenel Moise. Several people have been killed and dozens injured. Tourists, missionaries and nurses from Canada are having a difficult time trying to get out of the country. The US and Canadian governments have warned people not to travel to Haiti due to crime and civil unrest.

The blue pills coming into the US from Mexico nicknamed Mexican oxy are laced with deadly fentanyl and are contributing to the surge of fatal US overdoses. They are virtually indistinguishable from prescription oxycodone.
Federal authorities have seized a massive shipment of cocaine at a Southern California port. This is the same port where authorities seized two massive shipments of cocaine in late January. The total for the two shipments was 221 pounds – the largest at that port in 25 years. The busts were both found aboard ships coming from Central and South America. The first shipment, which was 204.2 pounds, was seized on Jan. 22 on a cargo ship from Ecuador. Six days later, the same authorities found a seven-bundle, 17.5-pound shipment of cocaine on a ship from Guatemala.
