Major Snowstorm Darcy hits Netherlands, Germany, and UK. Dutch authorities declared a rare ‘code red’ on Feb 7 as the severe snowstorm hit parts of Europe. This was the first major snowstorm in the Netherlands in a decade. In the UK, the storm was called “The Beast from the East 2.” Parts of Germany were also affected, disrupting road, rail, and air traffic.

The Irish sea turned to ice and the Thames froze for first time in 60 years after temps in Britain plunged to record lows. The cold snap is set to continue.

Rare Snowfall Hits Maui for Fourth Year in a row. While snow occurs almost every year on higher elevations of Hawaii, snow in Maui is a much rarer sight, averaging once every 5 years. However, 2021 is the fourth year in a row. The 2019 dusting was the archipelago’s lowest elevation snowfall ever.

7.7 Magnitude Earthquake Struck the South Pacific Ocean on Wednesday. Prior to this, a 6.2 quake struck the Indonesian island of Sumatra.

Software was used that provides remote access to a public water treatment facility to increase the level of sodium hydroxide—main ingredient in drain cleaners used in small quantities to adjust pH levels—to a dangerous amount. An operator at the plant intercepted the intrusion, and there were other systems in place to avoid catastrophe, authorities said, but they cautioned others to pay attention, saying “everyone should be on notice.”

By early Sunday morning, the snow will push into the Northeast, beginning in the Washington, D.C., and Baltimore areas before reaching Philadelphia and New York City by mid-morning. Deaths were reported from the previous snowstorm.

Biden immediately rejoined the World Health Organization (WHO). As a practical matter, China controls the political leadership of WHO. WHO was complicit in China’s deliberate spread of the disease. It disseminated China’s position that coronavirus was not readily contagious even though the organization’s senior doctors knew it was highly transmissible. Moreover, WHO championed the Chinese campaign against travel bans.

Kaveh Afrasiabi, who was portrayed as an expert on Iranian affairs, was arrested at his home in Massachusetts, charged with acting as an unregistered foreign agent. He was paid in secret to write columns favorable to Iran and lobby at least one American lawmaker on Iran’s behalf. Afrasiabi also appeared on English-language TV programs to discuss foreign affairs and promote the Iranian government’s views on world events, particularly Iran’s relations with the US.

In light of Iran’s fast-moving efforts to develop a nuclear bomb, Likud MK and Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee chairman Avi Dichter, has called to “initiate serious operational moves, in the Israel Defense Forces in particular.” The comments followed a report that the International Atomic Energy Agency had also found that Iran is getting closer to obtaining a nuclear weapon.

Unidentified aircraft targeted pro-Iranian militias in Al-Bukamal in Syria last Saturday night. Photos of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Commander Ghaani taken in Al-Bukamal were reportedly published in Iran several hours before the airstrikes. If the strikes were carried out by Israel, this would mark the fourth alleged Israeli airstrike reported in Syria this month.
