Also, an area of roughly 50-100 miles over parts of the northern Plains and Upper Midwest may separate severe thunderstorm and tornado watches and warnings with winter storm and blizzard watches and warnings.

Fire chief killed, emergency manager injured, homes destroyed in Nebraska wildfire. On Friday, a wildfire led to the death of a fire chief and left multiple families homeless. The cause of the fire was a result of strong winds blowing a dead tree into a power line. “Then, it took off through the hills and the canyons and the fields.” The wildfire consumed at least 30,000 acres, destroyed at least eight houses and 48 outbuildings, killed livestock, and prompted the evacuation of a village of more than 150 people.

The Texas drought is the worst in years, since 2011 when 95% of the state was in drought. Eleven years ago, parched conditions caused over $7 billion in crop and livestock losses, sparked wildfires, pushed power grids to the limit and reduced reservoirs to dangerously low levels. As of April 7, 85% of Texas was in drought conditions, affecting an estimated 17 million Texans. About 41% of the state is seeing extreme or exceptional drought.

In South Africa, Locust swarms engulf Western Cape – top ‘outbreak hot-spots’ mapped. The Western Cape is facing a battle to contain several locust swarms, as outbreaks continue to decimate crops and put the local farming industry at risk. Four swarms have been sighted in the past week, and its possible they are on their way to the Eastern Cape. There is a request for a ‘disaster classification’ for this current outbreak.

The banks will be able to track every transaction and even control how it is spent, blocking it from being transferred to people or organizations it deems undesirable.

Antisemitic hate crimes have quadrupled in the first quarter of 2022 (81 antisemitic hate crimes in New York City as of March 27, compared to just 20 over the same period in 2021).

Israeli PM Gives Security Forces Free Rein to Act After Deadly Tel Aviv Attack. A Muslim terrorist killed three people and wounded several others Thursday night. The shooting attack is the latest in a recent terrorist wave that has claimed the lives so far of 14 people. About a thousand Israel security forces hunted down the terrorist, who was killed as he fired at them. Gantz said that security forces have already made some 200 arrests and “if necessary, there will be thousands” in order to prevent future attacks.

An Op-Ed on The Week website Says France’s President Macron is uniquely positioned and qualified to lead the way to peace in Ukraine. From the article: “With the United Kingdom out of the European Union, and Angela Merkel off the international stage, Macron is the face of Europe. That France currently holds the EU presidency only adds to his mystique. Macron should use his newfound eminence to persuade the rest of Europe to keep Ukraine out of NATO. Macron should explicitly and publicly, though graciously, reject US leadership in Europe. That would be an uncomfortable step, but Europeans in general — and Ukrainians in particular — will be better off if he takes it.”

From CNN: Emmanuel Macron has a grand vision for the West. Summary: Ever since the crisis began, Macron has assumed the role of Europe’s statesman, willing to talk face-to-face and on the phone multiple times with Putin in a way that other world leaders would be either unwilling or, Macron’s supporters believe, unable to do. This is far from the first time Macron has played the part of Europe’s spiritual leader. Macron is a man who sees himself and France as a force for good on the world stage. He has hardly been shy in the past about his grand vision for the future of the European Union.

As polls show Macron is the favorite to secure another five years in power, Europe is in even greater need of direction than in 2017. The war in Ukraine has fundamentally changed European attitudes to security spending and underscored Europe’s over-reliance on Russian energy. It has also reminded those opposed to Putin, both inside and outside the EU, of the importance of remaining united in the face of an adversary. For that unity and focus to remain, Europe needs someone who is willing to provide that political leadership and take others with them. In theory, the French President should be well placed to take this job. His supporters say Macron is perfectly positioned to lead Europe through its next phase.

He shows up in the middle of every crisis, is always the first world leader to respond, and he has a closer relationship with Pope Francis than any other elected official anywhere in the world. Macron is also president of the European Union. Interestingly, his birthday falls (on the winter solstice) right in the middle of the Roman feast of Saturnalia. And you wonder why we say he just might be the biblical man of sin?

The rally also comes amid a rising wave of terrorism.
