Let the Good Times Roll! :: By Dr. Donald Whitchard

Matthew 6:16-18, 9:14-17; Mark 2:18-22; Luke 5:33-39

Summary: There is a time for fasting for the glory of God, and then there are times to enjoy food, company, and good times. However, some people are not satisfied with anything and prefer to stay miserable, indecisive, and closed to what God has in store for them.

I was born and reared in south Louisiana in the heart of what is known as “Cajun Country.” The city in which I grew up was surrounded by lakes, bayous, swamps, and refineries. You couldn’t go ten miles down one of the major highways that went through town before you spotted your first alligator lurking in the ditches and marshes, waiting for a deer, rabbit, turtle, or other unfortunate critter that got too close to the edge of the waters. We also were near crayfish holes, and during the proper seasons, a lot of families took nets and other traps to catch the “mudbugs.” Then they’d have a crayfish boil with spices, corn, potatoes, and onions all together in one big pot.

That was good eating, and so were the alligator tails after the hunters caught their yearly quota, sold the hides, and cut up the meat to give to neighbors or to sell at the local market (this was long before large grocery store chains or Walmart). Basically, our diet was what some states used for fish bait. Food and good times on weekends were a part of the Cajun life. French surnames were as common to me as “Smith” or “Jones” were in other places. By the way, words like “vegan,” “keto,” “paleo,” “gluten-free,” “low sodium,” and “low calorie” did not exist in our culture.

I say all of this to show that once upon a time, people enjoyed life, their friends, neighbors, relatives, good company, and good food, and things tended to be a little slower and easy-going than today.

When anyone got sick and had to go to the hospital, concepts such as going without meals or water for set amounts of time were not a part of the preparation or regimen for getting patients on their feet quicker or to adjust to new ways of living better. The first thing often waiting for the recuperating patient at home was food brought over by family and friends, and not what we would consider healthy today. Meals such as fried chicken, pasta, pies and cakes, breads, vegetables smothered in real butter or thick sauces, and sweet tea with real sugar were a treat for them. Same thing went with funerals, a Southern tradition if ever there was one.

The years have come and gone, and my health, in particular, has brought about changes in my diet and routine. When I have been hospitalized for any time over a day or two, I have been ordered by my physician to abstain from food or water for set times in order to have more accurate readings on my organs or other areas or for a medication to work effectively, or a clearer diagnosis of blood samples.

A couple of years ago, I had to undergo three days of tests and procedures and could not eat until everything was done. The first day was pretty rough, but by the end of the third day, I really was not hungry and did not want to fill myself up with anything sweet, salty, or fried. Right now, due to kidney problems, my food intake is drastically decreased of my own choice, and I have cut out foods that I once craved but do not find the least bit appetizing now. I eat when I’m hungry, which is not all that often.

I have come to appreciate the concept of fasting or decreasing one’s intake of food for a period of time for medical reasons. But when we read of people fasting in the Scriptures, it is for the purpose of being nearer to God in prayer, studying the Word, getting away from the things of the world, and resting in Him.

We read of Moses, Elijah, the Lord Jesus, Daniel, and Paul all going without food or water for set times, either as a sign of repentance or to endure temptations, and often to seek God’s counsel through prayer (Exodus 34:28; 1 Kings 19:8; Daniel 10:3; Luke 4; Matthew 4; Acts 9:9).

As we venture further into Mark’s Gospel, we come to Chapter 2, verses 18-22, where the disciples of John the Baptist were practicing fasting for the sake of personal piety and dedication to God, while the sanctimonious Pharisees were fasting in order to look pious and holy before the people. One group was sincere; the other one did it for show. Jesus’ own disciples were asked why they did not participate in fasting while the other two groups made it a part of their lives.

Jesus tells both groups and the crowds around Him that this is no time for such a discipline to take place, nor for somberness and rigid religious practices. Jesus tells everyone that these days are for good times and joy. A wedding celebration is fixing to take place, and everyone is invited to participate. Jesus wants no one left out of what will be the crowning event of all history.

In His teaching, Jesus presents a foretaste of the happiness that He, the eternal Bridegroom, will have with His Bride, the people of God who will make up the future church. While He was around, there would be a time of happiness and joy. Look at the evidence for such a claim:

  • Lepers were healed.
  • People were freed from all sicknesses and diseases.
  • The paralyzed now walked.
  • People were delivered from demon possession.
  • People were being saved from sin.
  • The Gospel message was being preached, telling all people of the kingdom of God and the offer of redemption from sin forever.

Who wouldn’t be happy under those circumstances?

You don’t decide to join a weight-loss support group on the day of the wedding feast. Jesus spoke of how the disciples would cherish and celebrate the time they would have with the Lord Jesus while He was here on Earth. The day would soon arrive where the joy would turn to sorrow and lament as the Bridegroom would be taken away from them. This was the Lord’s way of describing the approaching betrayal, arrest, torment, and crucifixion He would endure for the sake of fallen, sinful humanity. The Bridegroom’s friends would mourn but only for a short time.

All of what was to come in the life of Jesus was to become a new covenant between God and His people by the atoning work of Christ on the cross and His resurrection from the dead three days later. He then tells of the Old Covenant that existed between God and Israel through the means of the sacrifices in accordance with the Law of Moses. This act of consecration and atonement was one of the signs to show the Gentile world that there was a special relationship that separated the Jews from everyone else. They had been living under the Law for over 1,500 years. Had they been faithful during that time? By no means. Israel was steeped in devotion to the worship of idols, a fact affirmed by the Old Testament writings and secular history.

The Old Covenant, according to Jesus, was like an old, worn-out garment that had seen better days. The Gospel of grace that He preached and would be continued by the apostles and future generations was a new patch of unshrunk cloth. You could not sew it onto the old garment because the new patch, as it shrank, would further tear the old garment and render it useless. You could not blend the two fabrics together. The old covenant of the Law could not take upon itself the covenant of grace because that would be a heresy of faith plus works, which would nullify the entire purpose and message of the Gospel itself.

The same principle is true for animal skins that were used to make and ferment wine. Each skin drew out the dregs as it was poured into another skin and produced a good wine, free from impurities. The old skins would become dry and brittle, and unusable. You did not pour new wine into them, for they would split and ruin everything. New wineskins had to be used for new batches of wine.

Again, Jesus is teaching that the new covenant of grace could not be placed within the old covenant of the Law. His work of salvation as the last, perfect sacrifice for sins (a main point of the book of Hebrews) is the new wine, pure and fresh, and to drink it was pure joy. Old religions and new life in Christ cannot and will not mix. Jesus offers freedom from religious works and formats, which cannot save you in the first place. Jesus’ sacrifice paid it all. This new wine would be at the table of the church and a part of a wonderful celebration that will continue into eternity in heaven with Him and our brethren throughout the ages.

The sad fact is that a lot of people prefer the old wine of works, good deeds, self-righteousness, rituals, routines, and other methods that they believe will get them into heaven as well, but to no avail (John 14:6; Acts 4:12; Romans 5:6-11; Ephesians 2:8-9).

Does this look like something you are doing now, trying to make things right in your own strength? God says our righteousness is no better than rags used for menstrual periods (Isaiah 53:6, 64:6). We cannot save or redeem ourselves. We all must turn to Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of our sins and the salvation of our souls. We must receive with gratitude and joy the undeserved gift of new life He offers us now (2 Corinthians 6:2; James 4:17).

I ask of you today to come to Christ and be a part of the joyous wedding party that will soon commence with His arrival and establishment of the eternal kingdom.

As we Cajuns tell someone to come join us at the table – sit down, grab a plate, and “pass a good time.”

What Do Events in Afghanistan Reveal? :: By Jonathan Brentner

The Biden administration’s gift of Afghanistan to the Taliban reveals many things about our world as we journey through these biblical times leading up to the time of Jesus’ appearing.

I believe that those in control of America’s government want us to conclude that the tragic events in Afghanistan happened as the result of Biden’s incompetence and the failure of the Afghan army. I do not profess to know all that’s going on behind the scenes, but I’m convinced those truly in power of the U.S. planned the Taliban takeover of the nation with the full knowledge that everything we see today would take place. It was all intentional.

On the Canada Free Press website, columnist Kelly O’Connell wrote:

“Afghanistan—Not by Accident: The disaster that is Afghanistan is so defective in so many profound and different ways that it has to be a purposeful decision to try and destroy America’s standing in the world. Nobody could make so many mistakes at that level and have it all be by accident. We know the leftist Biden Administration has already done everything they can to sabotage America. And by creating such a gigantic avoidable disaster, we are communicating to the world that we can’t be trusted.”

The U.S. military did not merely withdraw from Afghanistan; it rapidly retreated in the middle of night without any advance notification to the Afghans or to any of our allies. In doing so, they left behind a wide array of armaments and sophisticated weaponry worth, according to some reports, as much as $85 billion. It’s now available for use by one of the world’s most ruthless and murderous terrorist organizations who will surely share these weapons with their close allies, ISIS and Al Qaeda.

In spite of all this, I remain absolutely convinced of God’s sovereignty over history and that the events of the past couple of weeks line up perfectly with the rapidly approaching seven-year Tribulation. I say this for the following reasons:

Evil is Growing Exponentially in Our World

The recent events in Afghanistan confirm the rapidly growing presence of evil in our world. The Taliban are ruthless, demonic killers that will impose an oppressive tyranny on the Afghan citizens, of which they are well aware. Why else would mothers hand their babies to soldiers at the Kabul Airport? They would rather give their infants a chance at freedom than raise their dear, precious children under a viciously cruel regime that kills without the slightest hint of remorse.

The Taliban are torturing and murdering Afghans who cooperated in any way with the Americans during the past twenty years. They require that all households with a young woman twelve years of age or older mark their homes with an “X.” If the soldiers find a home not marked in such a way with such a daughter, they execute the entire family.

The Taliban represent demonic evil at its worst, and it greatly saddens me so much to see my country standing back and enabling these atrocities to continue. The U.S. army had the firepower and resources to stop the rapid takeover of Afghanistan but did nothing at all. As I write, the Biden administration is preventing the rescue of hundreds of Americans left behind.

Regardless of his mental state, President Joe Biden bears all the responsibility for the suffering and bloodshed in Afghanistan. He cannot hide behind his dementia or the decisions of a previous administration. As Commander and Chief, Biden had full control of the American military at the time of the exit; he executed his plan for its rapid departure. He was not bound by any previous plans. He put his strategy into operation and what we see happening in Kabul is one hundred percent the result of his scheme.

We now know that in July, the Afghan president warned Biden of the growing strength of the Taliban and the inability of his forces to stop them. President Biden told him to lie about the Taliban’s pending takeover of the country so he could continue with his agenda of surrendering Afghanistan to the Taliban.

America Is No Longer Force for Good in the World

The recent events in Afghanistan reveal that the United States is no longer a force for good in the world. During WW II, the U.S. played a crucial role in stopping the Axis powers. We stopped the Nazis from taking over Europe and ended the slaughtering of the Jewish people in Hitler’s concentration camps.

Now, however, we have not only helped a force equally evil, if not more so, take over a nation, but we have supplied them with weapons beyond their wildest dreams. The death toll of innocent lives from these barbaric terrorists may very well be astronomical apart from the Lord’s intervention.

The inept response of the U.S. in Afghanistan has emboldened China to advance its plans for attacking and taking control of Taiwan. The leaders of Israel talk openly about the fact that they can no longer depend upon the United States if attacked. Could this be an open door for the future invasion of Israel?

European leaders have sharply criticized President Biden, and the British Parliament voted to hold him in contempt for his bungling of the withdrawal from Afghanistan. According to Amir Tsarfati, the abandonment of so much military power shocked the Russians. The total loss of confidence in the Biden administration has rekindled efforts to build up a united military force in Europe.

Is Afghanistan a Player in the Gog/Magog War?

On August 25, 2021, an article on the Lion and Lamb Ministries website suggests that Afghanistan will take part in the invasion of Israel described in Ezekiel 38-39. Nathan Jones, in the quote below, explains why we can consider this nation as part of “Magog:”

Some historians point to the former Soviet nations of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, as well as including Afghanistan, as encompassing the land of Magog. Historian Edwin Yamauchi explains that Magog was the “ancient Scythian northern nomadic tribes who inhabited the territory from Central Asia across the southern steppes of modern Russia.” These nations, today consisting of a population of 60 million, are united by one commonality — Islam. [i]

If so, this tells us that the Taliban’s reign of terror may very well be short-lived. The Lord will destroy them along with all the other nations that come against Israel. It would make God’s intervention all the more spectacular given the weapons these terrorists now possess.

Most teachers of biblical prophecy believe the Gog/Magog war will occur between the Rapture and the start of the Tribulation. If the seizing of Afghanistan by the Taliban signifies another step in the lead-up to this war, then it’s also another indication of the nearness of both prophetic events.

The World Order is Forming Before Our Eyes

The U.S. appearance of weakness removes a key obstacle in the plans of the globalists for world domination. The America of a year ago retained its place as a force for good in the world and hence a hindrance to the plans of the elite at the UN and the World Economic Forum (WEF), but such is no longer the case.

President Biden took his campaign slogan directly from the WEF and remains totally committed to their communist agenda, which necessitates a weakened America that’s unable to resist the plans of the globalists to setup a Marxist world government such as will be in place during the Tribulation period.

Although the Taliban leadership do not yet realize this, they are merely pawns in the globalists’ agenda to create a new world order (the Great Reset of the WEF and the UN’s Agenda 2030). I do not know the purposes of these powerbrokers behind allowing the rise to power of these ruthless terrorists.

I am certain, however, that a demonic agenda lies behind what we see happening in this faraway land, which the elite will exploit in their quest for worldwide domination. For the moment, it remains unclear.

Satan Hates Born-Again Christians

Perhaps the place where it hits the closest to home for us is this: the events in Afghanistan clearly reveal Satan’s murderous hatred for all those in Christ. I have read many reports to the effect that if the Taliban soldiers find anyone with the Bible on his or her smartphone, they instantly kill that person.

Credible reports exist to the effect that the Taliban are going door-to-door and executing all Christians that they find. One missionary, who has been in contact with twenty-two Afghan pastors, reports that most of them do not expect to survive this murderous purging. Though many attempt to label these reports as fake news, confirmation exists in firsthand accounts leaking out of Afghanistan. The Taliban are murdering all the Christians they find.

In Ephesians 6:11-12, Paul wrote regarding the role of Satan behind all the opposition we face as New Testament saints:

“Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.”

The reluctance of President Biden to stop or even criticize the vicious murdering of Christians by the Taliban does not bode well for the future of the true church in America. If the Lord does not come for us in the near future, those of us in the United States will likely feel the venomous rage of our adversary to a much greater degree than at the moment.

Please know that as the shadow of the coming Tribulation period grows darker by the day, the Bible assures us that everything remains under God’s control and that we have many reasons for hope in the midst of the darkness that is quickly overshadowing the world.

We cannot know the day nor the hour, but make no mistake; we live in the season of Jesus’ appearing to take us home to the place He’s preparing for us. The “blessed hope” of the gospel (Titus 2:11-14) signifies our soon departure from this world to be with Jesus. He will come for us at just the right time. We live in biblical times.

Through the Apostle Paul, the Lord promises us deliverance from the time of wrath that is about to overtake the world. In 1 Thessalonians 5:9, we read this about the timing of the rapture that must happen before the Tribulation:

“For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
