Debate Takeaway 2 – Abortion :: by Bill Wilson

The last debate between presidential candidates Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump drew a clear line in the sand regarding abortion. This is an issue that Christians have long held as the single issue qualifier for a candidate to receive their vote. To put it simply, Trump said he is pro-life.

Clinton said she is pro-abortion. But it is the extent to which they hold their positions that voters of good conscious should study. This extends to the delicate balance of the Supreme Court to government (taxpayer) funding of Planned Parenthood to allowing late term abortions of babies who are able to survive outside the womb.

Asked by moderator Chris Wallace if Roe v Wade should be overturned, Trump responded affirmatively, saying, “Well, if that would happen, because I am pro-life, and I will be appointing pro-life judges, I would think that that will go back to the individual states…if they overturned it, it will go back to the states… that will happen automatically, in my opinion because I am putting pro-life justices on the court.”

Clinton answered, “I strongly support Roe v Wade, and in this case, it’s not only about Roe v Wade… So many states are putting very stringent regulations on women that block them from exercising that choice to the extent that they are defunding Planned Parenthood, which, of course provides all kinds of cancer screenings and other benefits for women in our country.” Fact: Planned Parenthood does not provide cancer screenings at all.

Wallace asked Clinton about her vote against banning late-term, partial birth abortions. She responded, “” do not think the United States government should be stepping in and making those most personal of decisions.”  Trump said, “I think it’s terrible. If you go with what Hillary is saying, in the ninth month, you can take the baby and rip the baby out of the womb of the mother just prior to the birth of the baby… And that is not acceptable.”

Fact: The Centers for Disease Control states that 1.3% of abortions are late-term, translating to some 15,000 babies executed just prior to leaving the birth canal. The Guttmacher Institute, which studied who gets late term abortions, reports, “most women seeking later terminations are not doing so for reasons of fetal anomaly or life endangerment.”

When pressed further, Clinton said that the government had no business interfering with the decision to have a partial birth abortion, “And I will stand up for that right.” Trump said, “And, honestly, nobody has business doing what I just said, doing that, as late as one or two or three or four days prior to birth.”

This is egregious that a person running for President of the United States would advocate the grotesque killing of babies in the birth canal. How could any Christian support a leader who wants to do this? The Lord said in Jeremiah 2:34, “Also on your skirts is found the blood of the souls of the poor innocents: I have not found it by secret search, but plainly upon all these things.” As Christians, we should never support such abomination.

Debate Takeaway 1 – Supreme Court and Life :: by Bill Wilson

Fox News’ Chris Wallace opened the last presidential debate by asking the candidates where they would like the Supreme Court to take the country and what the candidates view was on interpreting the Constitution-based on the Founders’ words or as a living document to “be applied flexibly according to changing circumstances?”

This could be the most pivotal issue of the campaign because the 1-3 possible Supreme Court appointments by the next president will establish the direction of the country for the next generation; people, understand—THE NEXT GENERATION. The answers these candidates gave to this question is a true barometer of how Christians should determine their individual vote.

Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton said, “I feel that at this point in our country’s history, it is important that we not reverse marriage equality, that we not reverse Roe v Wade, that we stand up against Citizens United, we stand up for the rights of people in the workplace, that we stand up and basically say: The Supreme Court should represent all of us.”

In other words, while she didn’t say it, she believes the Supreme Court should represent people not the Constitution. Her position is to undermine traditional marriage and continue infanticide. The Clinton view of the Supreme Court is of legislating a progressive (translate: communistic) agenda from the bench, upholding invented rights by twisting the Constitution’s words.

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump answered directly: “The justices that I’m going to appoint will be pro-life. They will have a conservative bent. They will be protecting the Second Amendment. They are great scholars in all cases, and they’re people of tremendous respect. They will interpret the Constitution the way the founders wanted it interpreted.”

There is no doubt where Trump stands on abortion when it comes to the Supreme Court. This issue has been the traditional Christian litmus test of candidates since Roe vs. Wade was decided in 1973. The right to life is a basic tenet of our free society and due to the Supreme Court legislating from the bench, America has killed over 50 million babies in the womb.

Herein is a stark contrast of the candidates. Clinton favors abortion on demand, the destruction of traditional marriage, and a Supreme Court that interprets the Constitution based on representation of the people, or what is deemed today as “political correctness.”

Trump supports the rights of the unborn, which is consistent with the Declaration of Independence underscoring the basic God-given right to life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. This is also consistent with his position on the Second Amendment to be able to defend life.

On this issue alone, no one calling themselves a Christian should be unclear. Deuteronomy 30:19 says, “I call heaven and earth as witness this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live.”
