Democratic Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam told Virginians Thursday that they don’t need to be in church for God to hear their prayers.

Pompeo says Univ. of Washington abandoned student in Chinese ‘re-education camp’
On Wednesday, U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo accused the University of Washington of refusing to help free its student, who was in a Chinese re-education camp in 2017 and was held captive for nearly two years. Pompeo said the university chose not to act to avoid jeopardizing a multi-million dollar deal with China at the time. U.S. campuses are “rife with anti-Americanism, and present easy targets for [Chinese] anti-American messaging. That’s why they planted Confucius Institutes on our campuses. But right here in Georgia, Wesleyan College still has one in Macon.”

Drought intensifies across High Plains, western and southern US
On this week’s map, areas of the region—including southwestern North Dakota and central Nebraska—saw modest expansion in areas of Severe Drought (D2) as well as expansion in areas of Moderate Drought (D1) in southwestern North Dakota in response to a combination of factors—short-term precipitation deficits, lack of seasonal snow cover, depleted soil moisture, and unseasonably warm temperatures (12 to 20 degrees F above normal)—during the past week.

California’s Drought Worsens in December
An extremely dry start to fall punctuated by dry offshore winds led to the changes, according to Dan McEvoy, applied climatologist with the Desert Research Institute. This year has been perhaps the most extreme example yet of a shortened rain season and expansion of the fire season made worse by record-setting evaporative drought demand index (EDDI) that has been literally off the charts compared to previous years.

4th Minor Earthquake in 2 Weeks Felt in Kansas
The earthquake had an estimated magnitude of 3.0, the U.S. Geological Survey said. It struck in the morning in east Wichita near the enclave of Eastborough. Its epicenter was 3.1 miles (4.99 kilometers) underground, the geological survey said.

Small earthquake rattles portion of north Georgia
DAWSON COUNTY, Ga. – Several FOX 5 viewers in north Georgia reported feeling an earthquake Wednesday evening. It wasn’t big enough to register immediately on the United States Geological Survey’s earthquake website, but Dawson County Emergency Services reported a 1.8 magnitude did happen.

Magnitude 3.0 earthquake felt in Maine
Dozens of Maine residents said they felt a rumble beneath their feet Wednesday morning. A magnitude 3.0 earthquake was reported in the state shortly after 7:30 a.m., according to the United States Geological Survey.

3.2 magnitude earthquake detected in South Dakota
The United States Geological Survey says the quake hit just before midnight with an epicenter in Walworth County. It was most intensely felt in nearby Bowdle, SD, which is 7 miles from where the USGS registered the epicenter. Bowdle is 35 miles away from the South Dakota and North Dakota border.
