US imposes China visa restrictions over Uighur issue
The US has said it will impose visa restrictions on Chinese officials accused of involvement in repression of Muslim populations. It follows the decision on Monday to blacklist 28 Chinese organisations linked by the US to allegations of abuse in the Xinjiang region. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the Chinese government had instituted “a highly repressive campaign”.
Australia bushfires: Dozens of houses destroyed or damaged
Up to 30 houses have been destroyed or seriously damaged in a bushfire in the Australian state of New South Wales. Scores of blazes burned across the state and neighbouring Queensland on Tuesday as temperatures climbed as high as 40C (104F) in some areas. Authorities said one man had suffered serious burns in a fire that was thought to have been deliberately lit.
Ecuador protesters storm parliament as unrest worsens
President Lenín Moreno has imposed a night curfew near government buildings after protesters clashed with security forces inside Ecuador’s heavily guarded parliament. Demonstrators briefly burst through a police cordon before being driven back with tear gas, witnesses said. Mr Moreno declared a state of emergency last week but has failed to end protests led by indigenous groups.
Turkey boosts troops to cross Syria border ‘shortly’
Turkey has boosted its forces on the Syrian border ahead of a long-threatened incursion that could target Kurdish-led forces allied to the US. Troops would cross into Syria “shortly”, a presidential aide said. Turkey wants to create a “safe zone” cleared of a Kurdish militia that will also house some of Turkey’s 3.6 million Syrian refugees.
Northern California braced for mega power cut
A power company has started cutting electricity to around 800,000 homes, businesses and other locations in Northern California, in an attempt to prevent wildfires. Large swathes of the San Francisco Bay Area – though not the city itself – are expected to be affected. The region’s utility company, Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E), has warned the shut down could last several days.
