Rebellion is as the Sin of Witchcraft :: By Candy Austin

“For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, he hath also rejected thee from being king” (1 Samuel 15:23, KJV).

As parents of prodigals, not only do we feel undeserved condemnation from our children, insensitive judgment from others, and personal shame for how our children turned out – the hardest part to live with on a daily basis is that we tend to beat ourselves up by scrutinizing where we must have gone wrong.

Looking back, I resent the fact that I was not stronger in the LORD earlier on. One of the issues was being a Christian yet Secular Mom at the time; therefore, I did not have enough godly wisdom and discernment in perceiving how much impact our culture, pagan holidays, worldly music and entertainment had on our children.

Now it bothers me when I see churches celebrating pagan holidays that have infiltrated in over the years, such as Halloween… like it is a ‘good thing’ to participate in for various compromising excuses.

In the past year, we left a church for that very reason, upon seeing ‘teaching members’ enthusiastically promoting the celebration of it. Deep down, I know the person I am really frustrated at is myself for introducing our children to these ungodly, secular, pagan rituals which obviously still have an impact on them to this day. Still, it is nonetheless alarming to see now, at our current church, the ‘lack of spiritual discernment’ from ‘prominent members’ overlooking the implications of such ungodly and secular influences. All of it really makes me concerned about how much true, godly, spiritual discernment many in the church and/or Christians in general have in these Last Days.

Let me elaborate on how much an impact this can really have:

During her teen years, our oldest would check out Occultic books on Vampire stories from the library without my knowledge. Every time I found such a book in her room, I would confront her on not having my permission to check out these kinds of books and bring them into our home. As usual, it did not matter if she had my permission or not; she still stubbornly checked the Occultic books out and read them.

So, it should not have been a surprise to find those kinds of writings in her journal after she left home: fanatical stories about her and her boyfriend sneaking out at night to work as bartenders as teenagers, then about them going to a park in the middle of the night to find victims to please her ‘vampire appetite,’ in seeing her victims eyes turn black while sinking in her teeth and draining their necks. Also, she wrote about their plans for the future in becoming ‘Kings and Queens of the Underworld.’

Upon my realizing that Underworld meant ‘Hell’… needless to say, it was mortifying to see that she could write such things.

As if that ‘punch in the gut’ was not enough… one year we were watching our youngest paint a mural for a local church of the three crosses at Golgotha, with the cross of CHRIST in the center. Seeing as how she is such a talented artist, we were so proud of her work and thankful that she was using her gift for the LORD. At that point, we had such high hopes that at least one of our daughters had her ‘head on straight,’ her heart right with GOD, and was going in the right direction… that she had truly found the narrow path to Life! But… by the next year, the ‘second punch in the gut’ came in seeing that she would walk away from GOD, us, and her Faith, to ‘follow her heart’ and go down the wide road to destruction by choosing to live in sin with her boyfriend.

The truth of the matter is that we all have Free will; every Family member has God-given Principles and Responsibilities in how we are to live out our lives with one another. First, we are to Love GOD with all of our Heart, Soul, Strength, and Mind, and to Love one another as ourselves. If only in a fallen world it were that easy.

The fact is, pride and rebellion all started with Satan, and these sins are the very things that ruin GOD’S ordained hierarchy and Biblical Principles within the Family. Every Family at one time or another will be attacked; it is not a matter of if… but when… they will be attacked by pride and rebellion, because Satan hates GOD’S design of Marriage, Children, and Family. The truth is, Satan hates every Family… especially Christian Families.

From a Sister in Christ on the frontlines of this battle, the best advice I could give is to Pray against the root of rebellion. The root of rebellion is explained in the verse at the top of this article… it is because of the rejection of the WORD of the LORD. When GOD’S WORD is rejected, then rebellion ensues, the Love of many waxes cold, and those on the frontlines are deeply wounded and immensely hurt in many ways.  It is a pain that I cannot fully describe and one that I never dreamed that we would ever go through.

Excerpt from Got Questions.org:

-Rebellion is opposition to authority.

-Rebellion always begins in the heart.

-Rebellion against proper authority is a serious matter in God’s eyes.

-Rebellion is linked to pride in this passage, and both sins are equated with witchcraft and paganism.

-Rebellion against familial authority also leads to chaos and dysfunction within the home.

-Although we have the freedom to choose to obey the Lord or not, His Law still prevails. – Excerpts from “What Does the Bible Say About Rebellion?”

The question is, “How can we pray ‘against the root of rebellion’ when their free will is out of our control, and GOD does not force HIS WILL onto anybody?” The answer to that question, I have found, is this: we are to pray for our lost family members’ salvation even though they have their own free will because: 1) Prayer is powerful, and we never know when they may finally get saved. 2) Praying helps us by giving us wisdom, discernment, strength, and courage to keep going in this life. 3) By our faithful praying, GOD will give us a Peace that passes understanding.

Excerpts from Great Bible Study.com:

Rebellion is an open door to the demonic in a person’s life. The Bible strictly warns us against rebellion, and its consequences are not to be taken lightly. God’s Word tells us that rebellion is in the same category of sin as witchcraft itself.

It is bad enough to be rebellious, but anybody who curses their father or mother shall come under a curse, and find themselves in obscure darkness:

Proverbs 20:20, “Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness.”

The Bible is clear that a man who is rebellious is a man whose heart is not right with God.

Psalms 78:8, “And might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation; a generation that set not their heart aright, and whose spirit was not steadfast with God.”

If you have been rebellious, then stop! Forsake your rebellion and turn to the Lord. Repent of thy ways, that ye shall receive mercy. Rebellion is an open door to demonic spirits in a person’s life. God’s Word warns us that rebellion darkens your spiritual eyesight (discernment), and it deafens your ears to hear God’s voice. – Excerpts from “The Dangers of Rebellion.”

After going through this painful prodigal experience over the last several years, I have come to emotionally relate to the accounts of David and his son Absalom. Absalom wanted to usurp his father’s authority and kingship by taking his throne, so he publicly shamed him by sleeping with his concubines in front of all of Israel. In his pride and rebellion, Absalom wanted to mercilessly kill his father David. As a loving father, David suffered in every way possible during this harrowing and heart-wrenching time; but even still, he loved and mourned for Absalom when he found out he was killed.

“And the king was much moved, and went up to the chamber over the gate, and wept: and as he went, thus he said, O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! would God I had died for thee, O Absalom, my son, my son!” (2 Samuel 18:33).

I imagine this is probably a ‘fraction of a taste’ of how ABBA FATHER GOD has felt, is feeling, and will feel when all those whom HE has lovingly created become swelled up with pride and choose to ‘woefully rebel’ against HIM. I have also come to learn that the Bible is rife with scripture on partaking and sharing in the sufferings of CHRIST – that it is considered a privilege to suffer on behalf of CHRIST. To the true Christian, it is not a burden but a knowledge that one is actually in GOD’S favor; and partaking of CHRIST’S sufferings is something to accept and embrace.

“Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you: But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy” (1 Peter 4:12-13).

Lastly, pride and rebellion are serious sins in GOD’S eyes, and know that GOD is not mocked and that no one will get away with sinning against HIM. All sin is ultimately against GOD; it may feel personal but, in essence, they are sinning against HIM. Never stop praying for your rebellious loved ones… because you just never know when… the HOLY SPIRIT will move, once they finally open and soften their hearts to receive HIM; and JESUS will give them a new heart and put a new spirit into them, and GOD will take away their stony heart and give them a heart of flesh. We just never know when…

“A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh” (Ezekiel 36:26).

Until next time… MARANATHA!
