The International Court of Justice on Friday said it has received a complaint from the “State of Palestine” against the United States, arguing that the US government’s placement of its Israeli embassy in Jerusalem violates an international treaty and it should be removed. The ICJ, known as the World Court, said in a statement Palestine argues the 1961 Vienna Convention of Diplomatic Relations requires a country to locate its embassy on the territory of a host state.

Indonesia earthquake: Hundreds dead in Palu quake and tsunami
More than 380 people have been confirmed dead after a tsunami triggered by a magnitude 7.5 earthquake hit an Indonesian city on Friday. Waves up to 3m (10ft) high swept through Palu on Sulawesi island. Video on social media shows people screaming and fleeing in panic and a mosque among the buildings damaged. Strong aftershocks rocked the city on Saturday. Thousands of homes have collapsed, along with hospitals, hotels and a shopping centre.

Basra protests: US closes consulate after weeks of deadly protests
The US has said it will close its consulate in the southern Iraqi city of Basra, blaming increasing threats from Iran and Iranian-backed forces. In a statement, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said all but emergency staff would be relocated to Baghdad. He repeated earlier warnings that the US would hold Iran responsible for any harm to its citizens or facilities.

The ruling comes in response to a challenge from Huntington Beach officials. The city opposed the controversial law, arguing it infringes on local governments’ authority. The judge agreed, saying cities must be allowed to police themselves.

The Ministry of Defense’s National Counterterrorism Bureau announced on Thursday that it had uncovered a terrorist financing infrastructure for Hamas in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank . The scheme was exposed in a joint operation of the IDF, the Tax Authority and the Shin Bet. It is suspected that Hamas used textile merchants who import large containers into the Gaza Strip.

California governor signs gun control bills into law
California Governor Jerry Brown signed several gun control bills into law on Friday, including one measure that raises the minimum age for buying rifles and shotguns from 18 to 21. The new laws come seven months after a gunman opened fire with a semiautomatic assault-style rifle at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, killing 14 students and three adults, the second-deadliest mass shooting at a public school in U.S. history.
