For the past year, select Google advertisers have had access to a potent new tool to track whether the ads they ran online led to a sale at a physical store in the U.S. That insight came thanks in part to a stockpile of Mastercard transactions that Google paid for.

Palestinian officials have condemned the US decision to end all funding to the UN’s Palestinian refugee agency. The US has been the largest donor to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (Unrwa) – but now says the organisation is “irredeemably flawed”. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’s spokesman has called the move a “flagrant assault against the Palestinian people”.

Ukraine crisis: Blast kills top Donetsk rebel Zakharchenko
A leader of Russian-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine, Alexander Zakharchenko, has been killed in an explosion at a cafe in Donetsk city. “The head of the DNR [Donetsk People’s Republic]… has died as the result of a terrorist attack,” Zakharchenko’s spokeswoman told AFP news agency. Russia’s foreign ministry said it suspected Ukraine of organising the latest killing.

Nicaragua expels UN team after critical report
The government of Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega has ordered a team from the United Nations Commission for Human Rights to leave. The expulsion comes days after a critical report into human rights in Nicaragua during months of anti-government protests. The chief of the UN mission, Guillermo Fernandez, said his team would continue to monitor the situation from abroad.

Nafta: US-Canada trade talks break up without a deal
Talks between the US and Canada about amending the North American Free Trade Agreement (Nafta) have ended for the week without reaching a deal. US officials said they would meet their Canadian counterparts again next week in an effort to reach agreement. For now, the US plans to move forward with a deal with Mexico on terms reached earlier in the week.

Scientists have for the first time used gene-editing to treat Duchenne muscular dystrophy in a large mammal, a significant step towards effective treatment for people with the disorder. The condition, which has no cure, leads to loss of muscle function and strength and ultimately an early death. But in a study on dogs, scientists were able to partially restore the key protein people with DMD cannot make.
