A nerve evidently was struck among a segment of the Israeli public when earlier this month Palestinian flags adorned the iconic Rabin Square at a protest against the Nation-State Law, which bestows quasi-constitutional status to Israel’s Jewish character but fails to reaffirm the equality of all citizens, as enshrined in the Declaration of Independence and other parliamentary laws.

Trump cuts $200 million in aid to Palestinians
The State Department has cut more than $200 million in aid to the Palestinian Authority “at the direction of the president,” the administration announced on Friday. The aid cut is the result of a review of US assistance to the Palestinian Authority ” to ensure these funds are spent in accordance with US national interests and provide value to the US taxpayer,” said a State Department spokesman.

German bank’s ‘antisemitism’ leads United Israel Appeal to shut account
The German branch of the Keren Hayesod-United Israel Appeal – the prominent Israeli public fundraising global organization to advance the security of the Jewish state – closed its account on Thursday with the Bank for Social Economy (Bank für Sozialwirtschaft) because the financial institution refuses to shut down a bank account belonging to the hardcore anti-Israel group Jewish Voice for Peace in the Middle East.

North Korea visit: Trump calls off Pompeo’s trip
US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will not be travelling to North Korea in the immediate future after Donald Trump asked him to call off a planned trip. The president tweeted that insufficient progress was being made in dismantling Pyongyang’s nuclear programme. He also suggested China was not doing enough to put pressure on North Korea – due to trade tensions with the US.

Papal visit: Pope Francis begins two-day Irish visit
Pope Francis has arrived in the Republic of Ireland’s first papal visit for almost 40 years. The Pope is expected to meet some victims of clerical sex abuse later on Saturday. In a letter to the world’s 1.2bn Roman Catholics, the Pope this week condemned the “atrocities” of child abuse and clerical cover-ups. The visit coincides with the World Meeting of Families – a global Catholic gathering held every three years.

Turkey condemned Friday Israel’s decision to approve some 1,000 housing units in the West Bank. Despite only 1,000 housing units approved, Turkey claimed in its condemnation statement that 2,000 housing units had been approved. “We harshly condemn Israel’s decision to approve 2,000 additional housing units in the Israeli-occupied West Bank,” Turkey’s Foreign Affairs statement said.
