Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is flying Thursday to Lithuania for a three-day trip to hold bilateral diplomatic meetings with the heads of the Baltic states, who will also be arriving in the European country. “I would also like to balance the EU’s unfriendly stance towards the State of Israel in order to achieve a more fair and genuine relationship with the State of Israel,” said Netanyahu before he boarded the plane.
US-China trade war: New tariffs come into force
US President Donald Trump’s trade war against China has moved up a gear as it brings in a 25% tax on a second wave of goods worth $16bn (£12.4bn). The move ratchets up the dispute which began in July. The US imports far more goods from China than it exports to it. There are fears that more tariffs could cause further damage to companies and consumers. Goods affected this time include motorcycles and aerials.

The Islamic State group (IS) has released an audio message purportedly from its leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, his first in almost in a year. In a speech, he calls on IS supporters to “persevere”, despite the losses the group has suffered in Iraq and Syria. The recording’s authenticity could not be verified, but experts said the voice resembled that heard in other messages.
Israel advances plans for 1,000 new West Bank settler homes
Israel has advanced plans to build more than 1,000 new homes in Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank. Final approval for construction was given for 382 homes, while the others cleared an earlier planning stage. Anti-settlement watchdog Peace Now said most would be built in communities that were likely to be evacuated as part of any peace deal with the Palestinians.

The Texas Gulf Coast oil terminals sent abroad more crude than they received in April, the Energy Information Administration said this week. During that month, crude oil exports from the Houston-Galveston port district exceeded imports by 15,000 bpd. Over the next month, the advantage of exports over imports welled further, to an impressive 470,000 bpd.
