Assange ‘seriously considering’ testifying before Senate panel
On Wednesday, the WikiLeaks Twitter account posted a letter that it says was delivered to Assange via the U.S. Embassy in London. The purported document is signed by committee Chairman Richard Burr and Vice Chairman Mark Warner and asks that Assange “make yourself available for a closed interview with bipartisan Committee staff at a mutually agreeable time and location” as part of the probe.

‘Leave immediately’: US Navy plane warned over South China Sea
During the flight the crew received six separate warnings from the Chinese military, telling them they were inside Chinese territory and urging them to leave. “Leave immediately and keep out to avoid any misunderstanding,” a voice said. The US Navy jet flew past four key artificial islands in the Spratly chain where China has built up fortifications: Subi Reef, Fiery Cross Reef, Johnson Reef and Mischief Reef. Each time the aircraft was challenged by Chinese military, the US Navy crew’s response was the same. “I am a sovereign immune United States naval aircraft conducting lawful military activities beyond the national airspace of any coastal state,” the response said. “In exercising these rights guaranteed by international law, I am operating with due regard for the rights and duties of all states.”

Chicago-area megachurch elders resign over groping scandal
The Board of Elders of the Willow Creek Community Church announced Wednesday they will all leave by year’s end. In a statement on the church’s website, the elders apologized for being slow to take seriously all the women who came forward with accusations against church founder Bill Hybels.

Brazil complained on Thursday that Venezuela was doing nothing to stop the spread of an outbreak of measles in Brazil and other neighboring countries that has been sparked by an exodus of Venezuelans fleeing economic collapse. Since February, four people – three of them Venezuelan – have died of measles in the remote Brazilian border state of Roraima where health authorities have confirmed 281 cases of the disease, mostly among children.
