Hundreds of flights have been cancelled in Japan as the country braces for a powerful typhoon, bringing winds of up to 180km/h (110mph). Typhoon Jongdari (or “skylark” in Korean), is expected to make landfall on the country’s main island, Honshu, late on Saturday or early on Sunday. The storm comes less than a month after floods killed more than 200 people, and then a heatwave left dozens dead.

US economic growth hits fastest rate since 2014
The US economy grew at its fastest pace in nearly four years in the second quarter, expanding at an annualised rate of 4.1%, official figures show. The gains were driven by strong consumer spending and a surge in exports as firms rushed to beat new trade tariffs. Syrian fighter jets approach Israeli border
