The Nato allies said joint teams would meet shortly to work through their diplomatic differences, including a dispute over the city of Manbij. Turkey has threatened to attack US-allied Kurdish forces in Manbij, whom they regard as terrorists.

A national state of emergency has been declared in Ethiopia just one day after the unexpected resignation of Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn.

Six Turkish journalists jailed for life for ‘coup links’
A Turkish court has sentenced six journalists to life in jail for alleged links to the July 2016 coup plotters. The judgement came as another Turkish court decided to release German-Turkish journalist Deniz Yucel, who has been held for a year without charge. The six were found guilty of links to US-based Islamic preacher Fethullah Gulen, blamed over the failed coup.

Mexico earthquake: Strong tremor hits Oaxaca state
A 7.2-magnitude earthquake has hit south-western Mexico, causing buildings to shake in the capital Mexico City, about 350km (217 miles) away. The epicentre of the powerful tremor was near Pinotepa de Don Luis in Oaxaca state, the US Geological Survey said. Friday’s quake was 24.6km underground. Some buildings were damaged in Oaxaca, but no deaths were reported.
