By nature, mankind tends to be more evil than good. Some people are born with a kinder disposition than others. But every man and woman is conceived and born in sin (Psalm 51.5), and all infants go astray from birth (Psalm 58.3). It is only the grace, mercy and love of God that changes a person from a proud, evil, self-centered egotistical bore to a loving, humble, kind, compassionate, merciful, generous, quiet and peaceful person. The saying that “power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely” is true.
The more powerful a person becomes the more sinful he grows. Men like Qin Shi Huang, Emir Timur (Tamerlane), Julius Caesar, Augustus, Caligula, Nero, Domitian, Commodus, Attila the Hun, Genghis Khan, Napoleon Bonaparte, Lenin, Trotsky, Stalin, Hitler, Mao, and Pol Pot became more evil and genocidal the more powerful they became. The same thing happens to the average person. The more sins they get away with the greater their desire to sin grows. The only time some people cuts back on sinning is when they get caught or they get saved.
This tendency to go from evil to super-evil is also true of nations. Some nations began with good intentions but after time they devolved into tyrannical nightmares. A few examples in recent history are France (1792), Russia (1917), Germany (1933) and Red China (1948). Even America, which began with the most noble and ethical intentions, is quickly devolving into a Big Brother tyrannical dictatorship.
