ADDITIONAL BACKGROUND:
In July 14, 2015, Iran negotiated a nuclear deal with the P5+1. The deal was called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, (JCPOA). The adoption of the deal came on October 18, 2015 and it was implemented on January 16, 2016. The deal completed extended negotiations that began in November of 2013.
On 13 October 2017, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the United States would not make the certification provided for under U.S.
President Trump’s three primary concerns with the JCPOA agreement were:
- The inability to deter Iran from developing Inter Continental Ballistic Missiles (ICBM’s)
- The “Sunset Clause,” after which, Iran would be able to break out with a nuclear weapon in a short
timeframe - The continued spread of terrorism generally throughout the world and specifically within the Middle East.
