Israel withdrew on Friday from a race against Germany and Belgium for two seats on the United Nations Security Council in 2019 and 2020. “After consulting with our partners, including our good friends, the State of Israel has decided to postpone its candidacy for a seat on the Security Council,” a statement from the mission said.
India girl, 16, burnt alive after Jharkhand rape
A 16-year-old girl in India was burnt alive after her parents complained to village elders that she had been raped, according to police. Fourteen people have been arrested in connection with the attacks in the eastern Indian state of Jharkhand. Police said the elders had ordered the accused rapists to do 100 sit-ups and pay a 50,000 rupee (£550; $750) fine as punishment. They were so enraged they beat the girl’s parents then set her on fire.
North Korea changes its time zone to match South
North Korea has changed time zone to match the South after last week’s inter-Korean summit, according to state media. At 23:30 local time (15:00 GMT) on Friday the country’s clocks moved forward 30 minutes to midnight. The reset is “the first practical step” to speed up Korean unification, the official KCNA news agency said.
US Navy resurrects Second Fleet in Atlantic to counter Russia
The US Navy has said it will re-establish its Second Fleet, as Russia becomes more assertive. Chief of Naval Operations Adm John Richardson said the fleet, disbanded in 2011, would oversee forces on the US East Coast and North Atlantic. He said the National Defense Strategy, published earlier this year, made it clear that the era of great power competition had returned.
Argentina raises interest rates to 40%
Argentina’s central bank has raised interest rates for the third time in eight days as the country’s currency, the peso, continues to fall sharply. On Friday, the bank hiked rates to 40% from 33.25%, a day after they were raised from 30.25%. A week ago, they were raised from 27.25%. The rises are aimed at supporting the peso, which has lost a quarter of its value over the past year.

The U.S. National Security Agency collected 534 million records of phone calls and text messages of Americans last year, more than triple gathered in 2016, a U.S. intelligence agency report released on Friday said. The sharp increase from 151 million occurred during the second full year of a new surveillance system…after U.S. lawmakers passed a law in 2015 that sought to limit its ability to collect such records in bulk.
