The U.N. Security Council unanimously imposed new sanctions on North Korea on Friday for its recent intercontinental ballistic missile test, seeking to limit its access to refined petroleum products and crude oil and its earnings from workers abroad. The U.N. resolution seeks to ban nearly 90 percent of refined petroleum exports to North Korea by capping them at 500,000 barrels a year and, in a last-minute change, demands the repatriation of North Koreans working abroad within 24 months…

‘There’s a war coming,’ Marine Corps general warns US troops
A Marine Corps commandant on Thursday warned U.S. troops stationed in Norway to be prepared for a coming war. “I hope I’m wrong, but there’s a war coming,” Gen. Robert Neller told them. “You’re in a fight here, an informational fight, a political fight, by your presence.” He told the Marines that they should be prepared for a “big-ass fight” on the horizon.

The new Austrian government will set the political agenda for the European Union, as its coalition leaders look to change how Europe is run. Prime Minister Sebastian Kurz struck a controversial coalition deal with the far-right Freedom Party to form a new Government. In return, the Freedom Party were given top cabinet posts and control over the Interior, Defense and Foreign Ministries. The new coalition leaders will not seek to leave the EU, but instead seek to change how the bloc is run, according to political analyst Thomas Hofer.

As the Washington Post reported, the FBI’s top lawyer, James Baker, is being reassigned. WaPo says Baker’s removal is part of Wray’s effort to assemble his own team of senior advisers while he tries to defuse allegations of partisanship that have plagued the bureau in recent months. But reports published over the summer said Baker was “the top suspect” in an interagency leak investigation, as we reported back in July. Baker’s head is the third to roll in the “housecleaning” that saw the FBI sanction Strzok and Bruce Ohr, a senior DOJ official who reportedly concealed his wife’s ties to opposition research firm Fusion GPS – the firm that supervised the creation of the infamous “Trump dossier.”

Syrian and Hizballah forces have seized a key village in the strategic Beit Jinn enclave north of Israeli Golan, just 4km from IDF Hermon positions. The village of Mahar Al-Mir was captured in two days of fighting ending Friday, Dec. 22. Mostly populated by Syrian Druzes, the village was held until now by Syrian rebels belonging to the al-Qaeda-linked Hayat Tahrir al-Sham. Syria and Hizballah claim that this group was sustained by arms and logistic support from Israel. According to DEBKAfile’s military sources, by capturing the village, the Syrian-Hizballah force has managed to split the rebel forces into two parts, each of them effectively under siege.

Israel to formally announce withdrawal from UNESCO
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu instructed Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) on Friday to submit a formal letter to the organization’s director-general announcing Israel’s departure from the UN body. “The letter will be submitted by Ambassador Carmel Sharma-Hacohen in the coming days, certainly before the end of the year,”…

Philippines Tropical Storm Tembin kills more than 100 on Mindanao
More than 100 people are reported to have been killed as a tropical storm swept through the southern Philippines, with dozens more missing. Storm Tembin brought flash flooding and mudslides to parts of Mindanao island. Two towns badly hit were Tubod and Piagapo, where a number of homes were buried by boulders.

Australia to end air strikes against IS in Iraq and Syria
Australia has said it will stop conducting air strikes against so-called Islamic State (IS) group targets in Iraq and Syria. Six hornet jets will be recalled, although refuelling and surveillance aircraft will remain at Iraq’s request. Australia has been conducting strikes as part of an international coalition for more than two years.

Moscow: U.S. arms supply to provoke Kiev to use force in eastern Ukraine
The U.S. decision to supply weapons to Ukraine is dangerous as it will encourage Kiev to use force in eastern Ukraine, Russian officials said on Saturday. The U.S. State Department said on Friday the United States would provide Ukraine with “enhanced defensive capabilities” as Kiev battles Russian-backed separatists in the eastern part of the country.
