US President Donald Trump has made new threats against North Korea in response to the country’s foreign minister’s fiery speech at the UN on Saturday. Ri Yong-ho described Mr Trump as a “mentally deranged person full of megalomania” on a “suicide mission”. The US president responded by saying Mr Ri and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un “won’t be around much longer” if they continue their rhetoric.
Catalonia referendum: Madrid moves to take over local policing
The Spanish authorities have moved to place all policing in Catalonia under central control to stop the disputed independence referendum on 1 October. Col Diego Pérez de los Cobos has been put in charge of Catalan and central police forces in the autonomous region. The order was justified as a way to achieve better co-ordination. But the Catalan authorities rejected it, saying it was an unacceptable interference.
Brazil’s army sent to quell Rio favela violence
The Brazilian army was deployed in one of Rio de Janeiro’s largest favelas, Rocinha, after six days of clashes between rival drug gangs. The shanty town is home to an estimated 70,000 people living on hillsides overlooking wealthy western Rio. A major highway running past the shanty town was closed for hours because of a gun battle between the police and criminals that caused traffic jams on one of the city’s main east-west arteries.
