The ground shook three miles from Tiptonville, TN at around 8:00am. The town is located on the Mississippi river on the border with Missouri. The magnitude of this quake was 2.9 with a depth of five and a half miles. A 2.3 magnitude earthquake was reported six miles north of New Madrid, MO at around 12:30pm. The depth was at eight miles.

The CDC says outbreaks of the plague occasionally happen in the southwest during cool summers that follow wet winters. While deadly centuries ago, the plague can be treated with antibiotics.
