In the last week, we’ve witnessed a massive crackdown on alternative media — the likes of which are unprecedented. Quite literally overnight, YouTube issued a sweeping update and demonetized thousands of video in accounts across the political spectrum.

Israel will soon re-open its embassy in Cairo, some nine months after it was closed due to security concerns, Israel media widely reported Tuesday. The Foreign Ministry would not confirm the reports, saying it does not discuss security arrangements at Israeli embassies. Israel’s ambassador to Egypt, David Govrin, was pulled out of the country with the entire embassy staff in December. He has been working out of Jerusalem since.

Iran may quit nuke deal if US imposes sanctions, Iran’s president warns
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani warned of the possibility that Iran could drop out of the 2015 nuclear deal… The deal was made with a number of world powers and included the lifting of international sanctions on Iran in exchange for limits on its nuclear program. Rouhani’s warning, made in a televised address to parliament, said that Iran could abandon the deal within hours if the United States continues to impose sanctions.

Jordan: No entry for Israel’s ambassador until it probes Amman shooting
Jordan has remained steadfast in its refusal to allow Israel to return its ambassador to Amman unless an Israeli security guard involved in a shooting at the embassy last month is brought to trial… Yahya Al-Saud, head of the Palestine Committee in Jordan’s parliament…confirmed that “an order was issued [Monday] banning the Israeli ambassador in the absence of an initial investigation in Israel over the actions of the security guard.”

Sierra Leone mudslides: Desperate dig for Freetown survivors
The desperate dig for survivors is resuming in Sierra Leone’s capital, after mudslides and floods claimed the lives of more than 300 people. Their homes in Freetown were engulfed after part of Sugar Loaf mountain collapsed following heavy rain early on Monday morning. Many of the victims were still asleep in their beds when disaster struck.

Brexit: UK suggests ‘untested’ customs system with EU
The government says it will propose an “innovative and untested approach” to customs checks as part of its Brexit negotiations. The model, one of two being put forward in a newly-published paper, would mean customs checks would not be needed at UK-EU borders. But “robust” enforcement would be required to avoid the UK being used to bypass EU border rules.

Venezuela’s Maduro orders military drill after Trump comments
Venezuela’s president has ordered the armed forces to hold exercises following US President Donald Trump comments about military intervention. In a televised speech, Nicolás Maduro said Venezuelans had to be prepared to defend the country against “the imperialist boot”. The “civic-military” exercises are due to take place on 26-27 August.

Record-sized data centre planned inside Arctic Circle
Plans to build the world’s “largest” data centre are being made public. The facility is set to be created at the Norwegian town of Ballangen, which is located inside the Arctic Circle. The firm behind the project, Kolos, says the chilled air and abundant hydropower available locally would help it keep its energy costs down.

Japanese fungus spreading in UK hospitals
More than 200 patients in England have been infected or contaminated with a drug-resistant fungus first found in Japan, health officials have confirmed. Hospitals are on the lookout for further cases and are putting in place measures to help control any further spread of the fungus, Candida auris. Public Health England says in some cases patients will have no symptoms, but the infection can cause serious bloodstream and wound infections.

Iran is preparing to send a flotilla of warships to the Atlantic Ocean following the announcement of a massive $500 million investment in war spending, according to Iranian leaders, who say the military moves are in response to recent efforts by the United States to impose a package of new economic sanctions on Tehran.

Mossad chief to visit Washington to give security briefing on Syria
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is sending a security delegation to the United States that will include Mossad director Yossi Cohen. American news site Axios reports that the delegation will arrive in Washington later in the week and will meet with National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster, his deputy Dina Powell, US Middle East envoy Jason Greenblatt and other senior officials.

Taliban urge Trump to withdraw all U.S. troops from Afghanistan
The United States should withdraw all its troops from Afghanistan and stop listening to “stooges” in Kabul, the Taliban warned in an open letter to U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday. The Trump administration is working to finalize a regional strategy that could include nearly 4,000 additional U.S. troops, part of a NATO-led coalition, that have been requested by commanders in the country.
