Magnitude-6.4 quake ‘genetically related’ to 7.8 Dusky Sound monster shake
A 6.4 magnitude earthquake south of New Zealand on Tuesday evening was close to, if not on, the subduction zone where the Australian Plate dips below the Pacific Plate. The 7pm quake was a little more than 200km to the southwest of the South Island, and “relatively shallow’, within the upper 35km, GNS Science duty seismologist, Dr Bill Fry said. Because it was shallow many people in the southern half of the South Island felt it.

CHANCE OF FLARES
Big sunspot AR2665 has decayed a little during the past 24 hours. Nevertheless, it still has an unstable magnetic field that poses a threat for moderately strong solar flares. NOAA forecasters say there is a 25% chance of M-class flares on July 12th. Any explosions would be geoeffective as the sunspot is directly facing our planet.

IDF troops come under fire in Jenin clashes; Palestinians report 2 killed
IDF soldiers came under fire overnight Tuesday during an operation in the West Bank city of Jenin, according to the army. An IDF statement said that Palestinian gunmen opened fire at the forces and hurled explosive devices toward them. The soldiers returned fire. Palestinian media reported of two killed and one injured in the exchange of gunfire. The IDF said it was investigating the reports.

Djibouti: Chinese troops depart for first overseas military base
Ships carrying Chinese troops are heading to Djibouti to set up Beijing’s first overseas military base, reports state media. China says the support base will be used for peacekeeping and humanitarian aid in Africa and West Asia. It will also be used for military co-operation, naval exercises and rescue missions, Xinhua said.

President Erdogan tells BBC: EU wastes Turkey’s time
Turkey will find it “comforting” if the EU says it cannot be accepted as a member, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has told the BBC. Speaking to HARDtalk’s Zeinab Badawi, he said Turkey was “able to stand on its own two feet”. He also denied the country had jailed 150 journalists, saying only two people with press cards were in prison.

Haiti to reform army after 20 years without
Haiti’s government has launched a campaign to re-establish its army, dissolved more than 20 years ago. It wants to recruit about 500 men and women to help deal with natural disasters and to patrol borders. The recruitment drive follows the announcement by the United Nations mission that it would be leaving Haiti in October.

‘Make new rules’ to save the oceans
A report to a UN ocean conference in New York points out that more than 60% of the ocean has no conservation rules as it’s outside national jurisdiction. It says the open ocean is at risk from climate change, over-fishing, deep sea mining, farm pollution and plastics. The authors say one area – the Bay of Bengal – is at a tipping point which could impact on global fish stocks.

The Latest: New wildfire brings destruction outside San Jose
…Another California wildfire has broken out east of San Jose. City of San Jose spokeswoman Cheryl Wessling says two homes have been destroyed by the fast-moving fire in the hills outside San Jose. Wessling says the San Jose Fire Department and state firefighters are battling the blaze near Alum Rock Park, where visitors and nearby residents are being evacuated.

Extra $600,000 sought to combat infectious diseases among refugees
Minnesota pays out millions every year in welfare for refugees, but there are secondary costs that never get tabulated. In fiscal 2017, which ended last last week, the state spent $1.5 million to combat three infectious disease outbreaks — including the largest measles outbreak in three decades, which was concentrated in the Somali refugee community.  And health officials notified legislative leaders this week that they want to tap a special public-health fund to offset additional costs.
