Israeli commandos head to Cyprus for largest land-based drill
Israel has sent a large number of commandos to Cyprus for the largest land-based joint drill ever to have taken place between the two countries. According to local media, the week-long exercise will take place in the areas of the Troodos mountains of Cyprus and will focus on scenarios for occupying and liberating villages as well as survival strategies.

UNRWA discovers Hamas tunnel under Gaza schools
The United Nations Relief and Works Agency announced…they discovered…a tunnel under two of its schools in the Gaza Strip: The Maghazi Elementary Boys A&B School and the Maghazi Prepatory Boys School…In a statement, UNRWA spokesperson Christopher Gunness said that the tunnels were discovered during construction of an extension of one of the buildings during summer vacation, when the schools were empty. The tunnel had no entry or exit points within the school.

Marawi siege: US special forces aiding Philippine army
US special forces are helping the Philippine military retake the southern city of Marawi from IS-linked militants, the Philippine army says. The forces are providing technical help and are not fighting, it said. President Rodrigo Duterte had earlier threatened to throw out US troops amid strained relations since taking office.

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday that he backs the NATO charter’s demand that all members be prepared to defend each other, weeks after jarring allies by not restating U.S. support for the agreement. At a joint news conference with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis, Trump said he supports the NATO charter’s Article 5, the requirement that each member of the alliance defend each other if they come under attack.

Germany’s Merkel lends support to Mexico over NAFTA
Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel on Friday backed Mexico to press for a successful renegotiation of the North American Free Trade Agreement with Donald Trump, thanking its government for keeping German interests in mind during the talks. Germany and Mexico have pursued policies tailored toward exporting manufactured goods, and both ran trade surpluses of more than $60 billion with the United States last year.
