Seismologists Register Magnitude 5.0 Earthquake off Russia’s Kamchatka
A 5.0 magnitude earthquake has struck off the coast of Russia’s Kamchatka peninsula, the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said Monday. The tremors were recorded at 01:21 GMT 108 kilometers (67 miles) away from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky at a depth of 57 kilometers. No damage or loss of life have been reported.

Guatemala’s Volcano of Fire erupted yesterday, spewing lava and sending up plumes of ash that rained down on nearby communities and could eventually reach the capital, civil protection authorities said. In the afternoon, explosions generated ash columns 4,500 metres above sea level, 500 metres less than in the morning. The longest of three lava flows so far stretched 1,600 metres.

Putin, Erdogan talks scheduled for March 9-10
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will meet his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Moscow on March 9-10, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. “I confirm. Negotiations [between Putin and Erdogan] have been planned,” Peskov told journalists on February 24, RIA Novosti reported. The Turkish leader will take part in the Turkey-Russia High Level Cooperation Council.

Palestinian report: IDF strikes Hamas targets in Gaza after rocket attack

IDF jets allegedly struck Hamas terror targets in the Gaza Strip on Monday afternoon in retaliation to a rocket launching that landed in southern Israeli territory overnight, according to Palestinian reports. There were no reports of damage or injury from the projectile that exploded in the Sha’ar Hanegev Regional Council.

Chile floods: Millions without water in capital Santiago
Rainstorms and landslides in Chile have contaminated a major river forcing the authorities to cut off drinking water to at least four million people in the capital, Santiago. Officials said the water supply from the Maipo river would be cut to most of the city until the water flowed clear. At least three people have been killed and 19 are missing as rivers overflowed and bridges were washed away.

Iran launched naval drills at the mouth of the Gulf and the Indian Ocean on Sunday, a naval commander said, as tensions with the United States escalated after U.S President Donald Trump put Tehran “on notice”. A US Air Force plane which helped in the aftermath of the Chernobyl disaster has been called in to find the source of a mysterious radioactive cloud heading towards the UK. The WC-135 Constant Phoenix, which is specially modified to collect atmospheric samples, flew out of RAF Mildenhall on a mission to find evidence of nuclear activity or explosion, according to strong rumours.

Stargazers applauded as they were plunged into darkness Sunday when the moon passed in front of the sun in a spectacular “ring of fire” eclipse. Astronomers and enthusiasts in Argentina were among the first to see the so-called annular eclipse as it crossed South America shortly after 1200 GMT, on course for Africa…The eclipse was most visible in a 100-kilometer (62-mile) band across Chile, Argentina, Angola, Zambia and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Report: Hamas currently has 15 border-crossing tunnels
There are currently at least 15 Hamas attack tunnels crossing the border into Israel, sources inside and outside of the cabinet told Channel 2’s Amit Segal on Sunday, ahead of the release of the State Comptroller report dealing with that threat. The White House will send federal departments a budget proposal on Monday containing the defense spending increase President Donald Trump promised, financed partly by cuts to the U.S. State Department, Environmental Protection Agency and other non-defense programs…Trump’s request for the Pentagon included more money for shipbuilding, military aircraft and establishing “a more robust presence in key international waterways and chokepoints” such as the Strait of Hormuz and South China Sea.
